Israel was tonight under pressure to allow an independent inquiry into its assault on the Gaza aid flotilla after autopsy results on the bodies of those killed, obtained by the Guardian, revealed they were peppered with 9mm bullets, many fired at close range.
Nine Turkish men on board the Mavi Marmara were shot a total of 30 times and five were killed by gunshot wounds to the head, according to the vice-chairman of the Turkish council of forensic medicine, which carried out the autopsies for the Turkish ministry of justice today.
The results revealed that a 60-year-old man, Ibrahim Bilgen, was shot four times in the temple, chest, hip and back. A 19-year-old, named as Fulkan Dogan, who also has US citizenship, was shot five times from less that 45cm, in the face, in the back of the head, twice in the leg and once in the back. Two other men were shot four times, and five of the victims were shot either in the back of the head or in the back, said Yalcin Buyuk, vice-chairman of the council of forensic medicine.
The findings emerged as more survivors gave their accounts of the raids. Ismail Patel, the chairman of Leicester-based pro-Palestinian group Friends of al-Aqsa, who returned to Britain today, told how he witnessed some of the fatal shootings and claimed that Israel had operated a “shoot to kill policy”.more..e-mail
Alexander Cockburn, CounterPunch6/4/2010
As the tv networks here give unlimited airtime to its apologists, the message rolls out that Israel is permitted every illegal act in the lexicon of international law, from acts of violence against a civilian population (the people of Gaza, starved under permanent blockade) to piracy on the high seas and the lethal attacks by Israeli commandos on the relief flotilla. The guiding purpose in this tsunami of drivel is that the viewers should be brainwashed into thinking Israel somehow has the right and the duty to act at will as the mad-dog of the planet.
Israel regrets But no! Israel doesnt regret. It preens and boasts and demands approval which it duly gets from its prime sponsor, the United States government, and most of the press. As former US senator Jim Abourezk remarked on this site last week “Its very much like the bully who, after punching someone smaller in the jaw, requires the victim to apologize for getting his face in the way of the bullys fist.”
Two points need stressing. Some of the critical commentary suggests that Israels murderous onslaught on the Mavi Marmara represents a qualitative escalation in that nations brazen criminality. Scarcely. Brazen criminality coincided with the establishment of the state in 1948. Only last week I reminded CounterPunchers of the lethal onslaught on the USS Liberty in 1967 which killed 34 and wounded 173.
The attack on the Mavi Marmara was carefully planned. As Max Blumenthal reports on his website,
Tel Aviv-Israel Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his senior ministers have attempted to blame army commanders for the bungled raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla, according to the UKs Daily Telegraph.
But was the raid really bungled? Did the Israeli military command and Netanyahu government have no clear strategy going in? Or was the violence they meted out against the flotilla activists deliberate and methodically planned?more..e-mail
The Editors, The Nation6/4/2010
June 21 edition
The Israeli commando raid on what has become known as the Freedom Flotilla is shocking on a number of levels. What could have driven Israel to order its navy to attack, in international waters, a flotilla of ships full of human rights activists, MPs from governments around the world, a Nobel Prize winner and two former US diplomats? What was there to gain from killing civiliansat least nine are dead, along with several dozen injuredattempting to deliver desperately needed humanitarian aid for the 1.5 million people of Gaza suffering under an Israeli blockade? Haaretz, Israels leading daily, said, “The decision makers negligence is threatening the security of Israelis, and Israels global status.”
Condemnation of the raid was immediate and overwhelming, with the shameful exception of the US government, whose UN representative merely expressed “regrets” at the loss of life. Demonstrations broke out in cities worldwide, including New York. Many countries condemned the attacknotably Turkey, until recently a key Israeli ally and regional power broker with whom relations may now be irreparably damaged because so many of its nationals were in the flotilla. The UN Security Council demanded an end to the Gaza blockade, although Washington successfully watered down the official statement and forestalled calls for an independent investigation. Without such an inquiry, its unlikely that those responsible for this assault will be held accountable.
The attack on the Freedom Flotilla is the culmination of more than four years of failed policy, in which a siege has been imposed on the entire population of Gaza in an attempt to weaken and isolate Hamas after its victory in the 2006 parliamentary elections. Israel does not bear sole responsibility for an unjust blockade that also undermines its own long-term security; indeed, the policy was jointly crafted and executed with the United States and has enjoyed the collusion of the European Union, Egypt and even the Fatah wing of the Palestinian Authority.more..e-mail
You will have no protection
Electronic Intifada: 4 Jun 2010 – For one thing, as soon as I wrote those words I was able to weep. Which I had not been able to do since learning of the attack by armed Israeli commandos on defenseless peace activists carrying aid to Gaza who tried to fend them off using chairs and sticks. I am thankful to know what it means to be good. Alice Walker writes for The Electronic Intifada.
Global boycotts of Israel intensify after bloody Flotilla attack
Electronic Intifada: 4 Jun 2010 – Israel’s bloody attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla on 31 May killing at least nine and injuring dozens of activists carrying humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip, has already intensified global actions for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it respects international law and human rights. Adri Nieuwhof reports for The Electronic Intifada.
Israel censors news on deadly Flotilla raid

The day the world became Gaza
Electronic Intifada: 4 Jun 2010 – Since Israel’s massacre of over 1,400 people in Gaza global civil society movements have stepped up their campaigns for solidarity with Palestinians. Governments, by contrast, carried on with business as usual. Israel’s lethal attack on the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza may change that, spurring governments to take unprecedented action to check Israel’s growing lawlessness. EI’s Ali Abunimah comments.
US helps Israel avert international inquiry
Electronic Intifada: 4 Jun 2010 – UNITED NATIONS (IPS) – Less than 48 hours after the Israeli attack on a flotilla of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, the most powerful political body at the United Nations acted most ineffectively: it opted for a shaky “presidential statement” instead of a demanding resolution.
The Same Boat
In Gaza: 3 Jun 2010 – Photo: Nidal Elkhairy The Dominion: Israels attack on flotilla mirrors daily reality in Gaza GAZAOn the evening of May 30, 2010, I awoke to a text message from a Gaza-based international activist saying that the Freedom Flotilla was being instructed by the Israeli Navy to halt its course to the Gaza Strip. The vessels were more than 70 miles from Gazas coast. I wasnt surprised. In every one of the nine Free Gaza trips from Cyprus to Gaza, the Israeli Navy commanded boats in international or Palestinian waters to turn around. Five voyages succeeded in ignoring the Israeli Navys threats and sailing on through international waters into Palestine. Earlier that day, Gaza had been preparing for the arrival of the flotilla. A sea demonstration had ventured a couple of kilometres out; an Israeli gunboat patrolled another kilometre or so out and had been shooting on some poor fishing trawler. In…
Freedom Flotilla Activists: “Beaten on the ship and at the airport”
Palestine Monitor: 4 Jun 2010 – The six Italian activists, part of the Flotilla headed to Gaza and attacked by Israeli commandos while in international waters, are back in Italy. Manolo Luppichini arrived yesterday at Ciampino airport (Rome). Palestine Monitor had the chance to interview him soon after his arrival. He reported that victims of the Israeli assault on the Freedom Flotilla number 19 people and not 9, as declared until today. Luppichini did not see directly the dead bodies but his source is Australian Jennie Campbell, one of the nurses present on the boat. Campbell, who was on the Mavi Marmara with her husband, told Luppichini she counted 19 bodies. In addition to the difficulty in tracking down the precise number of victims, there have also been conflicting reports about those still missing. Turkish PM Erdogan said today that nobody is missing from the passenger manifests, even if some people are still hospitalised in Israel….

Sea Blockade of Gaza Was ‘Temporary’ – 15 Years Ago
Palestine Chronicle: 4 Jun 2010 – By Stuart Littlewood London I must have got it all wrong. I thought the first duty of a government was to protect its citizens from assault while going about their lawful business. “There is no greater priority, no more important responsibility than the safety of all our citizens…” Didn’t our previous prime minister, Gordon Brown, say so? To my way of thinking, that means protecting from armed thugs any British subjects sailing peacefully and lawfully on the high seas. The Israelis advertised their threats. The government had plenty of warning. So where was the Royal Navy? Probably horsing around in the Gulf protecting foreigners who would rather be left alone. Or chasing pirates along the Somali coast. Or cruising the Caribbean showing the flag. Brown had also promised Royal Navy ships to thwart arms smuggling into Gaza, so if the flotilla was suspected of carrying arms youd think jolly…more
Rachel Corrie Returns – A Poem
Palestine Chronicle: 4 Jun 2010 – By Richard Jones If you once thought that when you crushed her bones and stopped her mouth with sand and stone murder would bring silence, then think again. If you once counted on distance in time and space to wear away the memory and in its place leave blank acceptance, then think again. If you once believed that your great lie could hold back the tide until by virtue of its growing old it could be taken for the truth, then think again. See how proudly she breasts a merciful sea, defiant of your tanks and jets and mines, laden with the best in all of us, full of love for Palestine. – Richard Jones is an American poet. A Call to Conscience, in the Name of Humanity
Palestine Chronicle: 4 Jun 2010 – By Susan Abulhawa In yet another of Israel’s ‘operations’ against unarmed civilians, Israel went at least 50 miles into international waters and boarded a global humanitarian flotilla from the Free Gaza Movement, which was carrying food, medicine, school supplies, and building material to the besieged and hungry people of Gaza. The human toll thus far is 16 unarmed civilians, murdered. Israel has refused to release their names and over 680 have been taken to unknown locations. By holding the only witnesses to this crime, Israel is stealing precious time to disseminate its propaganda and spin the story to its advantage. Before anyone had a chance to react, Israeli PR and spokespeople were busy feeding stories and giving interviews. Their claim amounts to this: Rioters from all over the world left their homes, jobs and families to gather on a boat in order to lure Israeli commandos into international waters and…more
What Qualifies a State for ‘Rogue’ Status?
Palestine Chronicle: 3 Jun 2010 – By Joseph Levine As I write this, not all the facts are in. For the most part we’ve only heard Israel’s version of th
e events surrounding the killing of peace activists aboard the Freedom Flotilla bound for Gaza. There are reasons to think this version is misleading, to say the least. But in a way this doesnt matter. Even if the particular events on the boat unfolded exactly as Israeli authorities claim, Israel has revealed itself, yet again, to be among the worlds top rogue states. And to Israels charge that they are treated by the world community according to a different standard, I say absolutely. What qualifies a state for rogue status? The basic idea is that rogue states are those that violate agreed norms of international behavior seriously enough to threaten international peace. That said, lets look at the double standard charge. Consider the officially designated rogue states:…more
