The radio infauxtainer is not your friend and never will be. Doesn’t want to be. Nothin’ personal, pal, jes’ business. Hell, you find they’re barely amiable to each other when you bother to look beneath the endless cellophane veneers. Remember Al Franken when he was with Air America? It wasn’t hard to tell he wasn’t at all liked by any of his shiny, expostulating, can’t-we-all-just-get-along, “Leftyish” comrades. For one, they were envious as hell of his talents, which are considerable. For another, they were insanely jealous of his paycheck ($2 mil/yr. plus whatever perks he received, cited and uncited). For a third, if what I hear can be relied upon through the haze of competition, bitterness, and other emotional paraphernalia from peers, he wasn’t himself all that nice a guy either, another climber just like the rest of them but with a far better rung position up the ladder for a commencement point. What exactly this means, and how percentages weigh in, as well as what’s false and what’s fully true, I have no 100% way of knowing entirely, but to anyone who paid attention to the AirAm shows, it was more than obvious there was bad blood between Franken and everyone – Malloy, Hartmann, Rhodes, Miller, etc. You certainly never heard him guest many fellow AirAm talk jocks except through corporate self-aggrandizement, did you? Though I may have missed an on-air mercy fuck or two, perhaps a management-forced tet a tet every so often, this was the case.

Then there was Randi Bitch Queen Rhodes. Even if you weren’t paying close attention, you followed very distinctly the pummeling she delivered her ex-husband (God help any poor bastard in and out of a relationship with her!) – one, after all, could hardly avoid it – then the snide or carefully modulated remarks re: radio compeers, referring rather sarcastically to “the truthseeker” (Malloy), to “the professor” (Hartmann), and to most everyone in the trade who held no possibility of augmenting or advancing her career. Malloy likewise thinly veiled his regard of her and of others, and still does (less obviously so as he remains low man on the pole, concerned for his future, masking such opinings more carefully of late, even as oblique as they used to be), but the sub-text is definitely there if you listen. Don’t take my word in any of this. Just go back and listen…if you can, as, where once these people were proud to catalogue performances through White Rose Society and elsewhere, including their own sites, those records are now being eradicated or revised, scrubbed, deleting out the too many revealing passages where all of them can now be seen to have been full of manure, especially re: capitalism, especially Rhodes and her “I’ve always been against all wars!” lies. Where once they relied upon philosophical steadfastness, now they’re a gaggle of Artful Dodgers. And highly sensible and woundable upon the subject.

Hartmann, Boy Scout that he is, on the other hand said little that was revealing, the perfect ad-man/politician. Thom wouldn’t say ‘shit’ if someone were stuffing his mouth full of it, nor would he venture a slighting opinion of fellow professionals…nor, you may notice, did he have ever them on his show except exceedingly rarely, very briefly, most often only when management forced the issue, usually in a sterile tone and when some station calamity was occurring. Everything Thom does follows a producting plan to commodify himself according to whatever inner vision of the end-game he holds ($$$). Compeers are interferences, time wasted, but there’s an even more problematic element in the foggy haze of this milieu.

The level of behind-the-scenes intrigues, throat-cuttings, backstabbings, and the pulling of others in front of bullets is no different than on Right air, if truth be told, or in any job situation for that matter. I’ve heard, from people in the industry, stories that are amusing, hilarious, dismaying, and shocking, from the rudimentary casting couch interludes with every Tom, Dick, and Manzo to really nasty imbroglios of covert court intrigues. Especially when host reduction time comes, the culling of the herd, or a profitable newcomer might threaten to displace a long-timer. Then the long knives come flashing out. Is the modus clear perhaps? It’s capitalism. Friendships, alliances, and everything else goes under the bus when money starts leering at its vassals, exposing its engorged nether regions, crafting a come hither smile. Nonetheless, for all that, there’s a far more primal matter at work concurrently. It concerns the audience itself.

What every radio infauxtainer most fears is the listener who calls up and aces him or her. True. Each and every host holds a mortal terror of not being the king or queen of their own show, and it makes sense. The moment the audience starts thinking “Heyyyyyyy, why doesn’t *that* caller run things? He’s *lots* smarter than Mr. X or Ms. Y!”, they’re in deep trouble. Hence the long road to Mike Malloy sidelining Australian caller Blue, who couldn’t help but top Malloy on damn near everything, so much more insightful were his remarks. More, you could hear Mike progressively struggle to try to mildly vilify the guy while understanding his audience wouldn’t go for it, a Sisyphean double-bind. It was interesting to witness/hear. The problem? Blue was expressing highly socialistic views in a very erudite manner, and Mike’s quite unwilling to go there except by distant reference: his obscure and completely unexplained “Malloy Socialism” ripped from Hartmann’s “small d democracy”, “democratic socialism”, “social democracy”, and no end of other bizarre quasi-apothegmatic bumpersticker coinings pulled out of some dark odorous body cavity.

Blue started out as one of Malloy’s faves but ended up in the same process all intelligent oppositional callers inevitably experience. What his present status is, I’ve no idea. Malloy’s so rarely on L.A. air, and even when he is, he’s had to cede a 33% time slot truncation in order to give arch-dickhead Phil Hendrie more time (5 hours now, 5 times a week, plus 3 more each day over at KFI, and counting – hey, thanks!, all you Air America shitheels for sitting on your collective hands while this troll was forced on us, every single one of you morons deathly silent in the face of it). Mike and Blue could be married now, and I’d never know it. Whatever, it still wouldn’t vacate what’s been so blatant. Sure, Blue was espousing heresies that’d get Mike in dutch with his Masters, but, more than anything, the Aussie was showing a natural superiority to Malloy’s acumen. Dark clouds there, folks, very dark clouds indeed. When you stop to ponder, especially in light of what’s out there and readily available overall, you have to wonder: How did these radio people nab their positions in the first place? Why is it there’s a plethora of true Left thinkers, a great abundance of them, and yet we get pissant Centrists as “Lefties” each and every time? Is it possible it all was planned right from the start, then maintained 24/7/365?
