Obama’s Middle East Visit Dashes Arab Hopes
Patrick Seale,  3/27/2013
President Barack Obama’s brief visit to the Middle East has given the Arab world a brutal lesson in power politics. Every word he uttered in Israel, every gesture he made, served to illustrate the unprecedented closeness of the U.S.-Israeli alliance, as well as his disregard for Arab interests and his evident reluctance to give the Palestine cause any serious or sustained attention.
Rarely if ever has an American President shown such intense concern for Israel’s welfare and such casual indifference for the Arabs.
The visit to Israel and its Arab neighbours marks an important moment in Obama’s presidency. It sends a clear message that he is not prepared to engage in a fight with powerful pro-Israeli forces deeply entrenched in American government and society. To the Arabs, it signals that resolving the Palestine problem is no longer his priority. He seems prepared to leave it to the next incumbent of the White House, whoever that might be.
No doubt John Kerry, America’s new Secretary of State, will go through the motions of addressing the Palestine problem for a while, but it would be naïve to expect any real progress without vigorous and sustained presidential attention, and that now seems highly unlikely.
Many Arabs had thought that Obama, on this his first presidential visit to the region, would give fresh impetus to the search for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement — even at this eleventh hour. Their disappointment has been bitter…. more.. e-mail

Just where does Israel’s legitimacy stem from anyway?
Ibrahim Hewitt, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 3/24/2013
All of the major pro-Israel Lobbyists, including Barack Obama just a few days ago, have used the word “delegitimisation” to condemn critics of the State of Israel and its policies. Earlier this month, the British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband affirmed his status as a Zionist in a speech to the Board of Deputies of British Jews in which he equated odious anti-Semitism with “delegitimisation of Israel” as if the two are one and the same thing; they’re not.
Almost everyone who has ever condemned Israel’s illegal activities and abuses of international human rights legislation and conventions has been accused of trying to “delegitimise” the state. The pro-Israel Lobby cannot, and will not, accept that criticism of Israel’s actions does not necessarily mean that you want to destroy the state; hate the deeds, not the people who do them is a motto I teach at school to young people confused when people like Obama and, in Britain, David Cameron and Miliband, claim to be advocates of peace and justice and yet routinely proclaim their support for a country which displays the characteristics of a rogue state in almost every sense.
A number of key documents are often cited as giving Israel legitimacy in its present form. The first is, of course, the Bible; God chose the Children of Israel and promised them the land. That’s what Zionists use to justify the modern Israeli claim to the land of Palestine, although the “founding father of Zionism”, Theodor Herzl, at whose grave Barack Obama paid homage last week, was famously an atheist. Moreover, “Israel” was originally neither a state nor a nation; the Children of Israel were the descendants of Prophet Jacob (“Israel”). The “promise”, or covenant, was conditional on his descendants fulfilling Divine Commandments and upholding Divine Laws.
Shlomo Sand, in his book The Invention of the Jewish People, has debunked “the central myths about the primeval origin of a marvellous nation that emerged from the desert, conquered a spacious land and built a glorious kingdom”…. more.. e-mail

Herzliya Conference outlines Israeli concerns
Adnan Abu Amer, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 3/27/2013
The conference warned of the “dangerous decline” of US power in the regionThis year’s Herzliya Conference in Israel was held amid the state’s fears of the rapid political changes in the region. This prompted the organisers to invite many Israeli officials and international figures to attend, including European prime ministers and senior officials in international economic institutions and organisations.
Herzliya is considered to be one of Israel’s most important security strategy conferences. It looks at security issues from a local, regional and international perspective and touches on every field, political, economic, security, military and strategic.
The conference is held at the Interdisciplinary Centre in Herzliya, a city named after the founding father of political Zionism, Theodor Herzl. Appropriately in the context, it is built on the ruins of a Palestinian village whose indigenous population was ethnically cleansed by the Israelis. Many Israeli strategists describe Herzliya as one of the most important conferences in terms of content and participation. The country’s president, prime minister, defence chiefs of staff and senior decision-makers all usually make an appearance.
Herzliya conferences have taken place annually since 2000. The first looked at “The Balance of National Strength and Security” and was initiated by Professor Uzi Arad, a former member of Mossad, who served as Foreign Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first term of office. With objectives focusing on the Judaisation of the state, matters relating to identity, education, military strategy, sec
urity, scientific research and the economy have been addressed. It is said that the event was founded due to what was described as the “escalating existential crisis” facing Israel.
The significance of Herzliya and its long-term impact on the state and its policies can be seen by looking at the past few years’ agendas and the topics they contain. For example…. more.. e-mail

All roads to Mashaal
Saleh Al-Naami in Gaza, Al-Ahram Weekly 3/20/2013
After some prevarication, Khaled Mashaal has confirmed his intention of heading the Hamas political bureau for a fifth term.
The head of the Hamas Political Bureau Khaled Mashaal has succumbed to pressure and withdrawn his plans to resign from the group’s leadership, and as a result there are now fewer pressures to hold a meeting of the group’s general council.
It is now almost certain that Mashaal will continue in his position for a fifth term after the council votes again at a later date.
Palestinian sources told Al-Ahram Weekly that Mashaal had changed his mind about resigning after pressure from group members inside and overseas, as well as intervention by Arab and Islamic parties urging him to continue in his position.
Most members of the Hamas leadership believe that under current circumstances no one in the group would be able to fill the vacuum left by Mashaal if he insisted on not nominating himself for a fifth term.
According to the sources, there were several candidates who could have succeeded Mashaal, including the deputy head of the political bureau Moussa Abu Marzouk and Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, though neither of these would have been able to fill Mashaal’s shoes.
The sources said that many in Hamas had not felt that Abu Marzouk could succeed Mashaal because he lacked charisma. Although he had served as head of the political bureau before Mashaal, his leadership skills were unimpressive, according to Hamas supporters.
Meanwhile, there is a sense inside the group that the head of Hamas needs to be located outside Palestine for symbolic reasons, since the vast majority of Palestinians live as refugees outside Palestinemore.. e-mail

Gaza’s Ark: Trade, Not aid
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Mar 2013 – By Eva Bartlett “An ark is literally a large floating vessel designed to keep its passengers and cargo safe,” say the group preparing ‘Gaza’s Ark’. But their ark, they say, is “a vessel that embodies hope that the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip can soon live in peace without the threat of the Israeli blockade.” An initiative by Palestinians in Gaza and international solidarity activists, Gaza’s Ark entails “purchasing a run-down boat from a local fishing family,” says Michael Coleman, a member of Free Gaza Australia and on the Gaza’s Ark steering committee. “The refurbishing will be done by Palestinians in the port of Gaza, and the sailing will be with a mixed crew of Palestinians and internationals,” says David Heap, spokesperson for Gaza’s Ark in Canada and Europe. The sailing date has not been announced yet. Pointing to a weathered fishing trawler with a ‘for sale’ sign painted on…more

Proxy War Destroying Syria
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Mar 2013 – By Jamal Kanj Writing about Syria is emotionally draining and intellectually overwhelming. Evident by the level of destruction and killing, the mutual hatred between President Bashar Al Assad’s regime and the armed opposition surpasses their love of country. More than 70,000 have been killed and, not counting internally displaced Syrians, there are more than one million refugees in neighboring countries. The Syrian people who selflessly opened their homes and shared their schools with the children of refugees from Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq are themselves living in horrible conditions in camps. Greater Syria, first broken up by British and French colonizers under the secret Sykes-Picot Agreement, is being fragmented further by internecine strife agitated by competing foreign powers. Russia and Iran are supporting a doomed dictatorship, while the West pours just enough fuel for the opposition to sustain an unwinnable war. The Syrians are trapped between an arrogant tyrant and…more

Goodbye Miliband; Don’t Come Back
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Mar 2013 – By Stuart Littlewood The tears shed by assorted media at the news of David Miliband’s departure from British politics for a new life in New York had me reaching once again for the sick-bag. “British politics will be a poorer place without David,” said brother Ed, leader of the Labour Party. Will it?  I’m pleased to see Peter Oborne’s straight-talking piece in The Telegraph putting Miliband D in his place. “We are, after all, talking about someone who was at best a minor politician, no towering colossus,” writes Oborne. “After Labour’s 1997 election victory he was the poster boy of a new ruling elite which seized control of the commanding heights of British politics. Anti-democratic, financially greedy and morally corrupt, this new political class has done the most enormous damage. Since David Miliband was its standard-bearer, his political career explains a great deal about what has gone wrong with British…more

‘Liberating’ Iraqis, Limb by Limb
Palestine Chronicle: 28 Mar 2013 – By Felicity Arbuthnot – London ‘Why should we hear about body bags and deaths … I mean, it’s not relevant, so why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that …’ — (Former First Lady, Barbara Bush , Good Morning America, 18th March 2003.) In these days of the tenth anniversary of the illegal invasion and near destruction of Iraq, answers are owed not alone for the dead, but to the cancer stricken, the deformed, to their parents, their siblings and all Iraqis. They were left with a land poisoned by depleted uranium in 1991, the burden ever building over twelve more years of (illegal) US and UK bombings, then the enormity of 2003. Fallujah’s victims have rightly come under medical and media scrutiny since the US military onslaught of April and November 2004, but throughout Iraq, there have been no reports of areas unaffected. In context, Dahr Jamail…more
