Remembering South African Struggle Hero Chris Hani: Lessons for Today

By Arianna Lissoni

South African communist leader Chris Hani was assassinated by white racists 27 years ago, removing him from the scene during the nation’s transition to Black rule. Hani fought careerism and corruption in the revolutionary movement. Today, the “tradition of internal debate” that Hani promoted “has become eroded, and criticism keeps being silenced as sowing disunity.”

Capitalism, Racism and the History of South Africa

by Sehlare Makgetlaneng

The African National Congress has failed to nationalize industries, redistribute the land, or tackle other goals of the Freedom Charter. Instead, it deliberately created a Black capitalist class, through the government’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy. But Black capitalism will not free South Africa from imperialism. “It will help to cement ties between the South African bourgeoisie and the imperialist bourgeoisie.”

History: How African Muslims “Civilized Spain”

by Garikai Chengu

For most of human history, northern Europe was a barbarian realm, to which it reverted with the fall of Rome. Muslim Moors from Africa civilized Spain. “In the 10th century, Cordoba was not just the capital of Moorish Spain but also the most important and modern city in Europe.” Moorish advances in science and philosophy “helped propel Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance.”

Freedom Rider: Trump Joins Democrats in the War Party

by BAR editor and senior columnist Margaret Kimberley

The Trump who upset the War Party with his stated opposition to regime change and willingness to lessen tensions with Russia has combusted in orange fireballs of war. In the wake of the attack on Syria, Bernie Sanders “proves himself to be a phony progressive, supporting the empire while claiming there is some difference between himself and his once and future rival, Clinton.” And, the pink pussy hat crowd? “They aren’t resisting anything at all.”

Anti-Russia Madness Attempts to Suppress the Bi-Partisan Triple Evils of Capitalism, Racism, and War

by Danny Haiphong

Washington’s “anti-Russia madness” has distracted attention from every other issue, including what Dr. Martin Luther King called “the triple evils” of war, capitalism, and white supremacy. As Trump surrenders to the “Deep State,” working class and poor folks sink deeper into economic misery. The anti-war movement has decayed to an infantile state, the Black liberation movement has yet to revive itself, and the Democrats are worse than useless.

The Community Had a Duty to Shut Down the Montgomery County Hearing on the Bethesda African Burial Ground

by BAR editor and columnist Dr. Marsha Adebayo

Black community members attempting to preserve an ancestral burial ground charge they were “deceived, misled and ambushed” by officials in suburban Montgomery County, Maryland. The Bethesda African Cemetery was already buried under a parking lot. Now the county has assigned an all-white team to determine if there are bodies in the cemetery – after booting two renowned Black experts off the case. Activists call the county’s conduct “criminal.”

God Squares Off with the Devil in Syria and Rwanda

by Ann Garrison

The propagandists of imperial war come in many packages, trailing the slime of mass death behind them. The Canadian ex-general Romeo Dallaire proudly bears the “white man’s burden” to punish Rwandans who were on the wrong (not the U.S.) side in their country’s civil war. He cites God as his proof. NPR’s Scott Simon deploys a familiar radio voice to condemn Washington’s targets to Hell. Neither cares that they have helped kill six million Congolese.

Deportation of African and Other Black Immigrants Is Quietly Increasing And No One Is Taking Note

by David Love

“Fully one-third of immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers are African” – the fastest growing immigrant group — and deportations of Black immigrants are expected to soar under Trump. The White House has placed bans on three countries — Somalia, Libya and Sudan — that account for huge numbers of Black refugees. The 50,000 undocumented Irish immigrants have little to fear. “These policies are designed to reduce to the number of Black and brown people.”

Trump Hopes to Get Democrats Off His Back with Syria Attack

The U.S. attack on a Syrian air base last week was designed to “prolong the war” and ultimately “destroy secular government in the Arab world,” said Margaret Kimberley, an editor and senior columnist at Black Agenda Report. The claim that Syria used chemical weapons against civilians is bogus, said Kimberley, speaking on Sputnik radio. The U.S.-backed Islamic jihadists stand to benefit most. “It’s interesting that these attacks always occur at some moment that is very opportune for them,” she said. President Trump hopes to increase his approval levels and ward off Democratic attacks. “Because he’s been accused of being under Putin’s influence, carrying out an attack against a Russian ally gives him some protection from those charges.”

Trump No Better for Haiti than Clinton

Many Haitian-Americans took an “anything but Hillary Clinton” position during the 2016 election, because of her role in rigging Haitian elections. However, U.S. policy towards Haiti has not changed under the Trump regime, said Dahoud Andre, a Brooklyn-based Haitian community activists and radio host. “Were Donald Trump to have been the one in the Clinton’s position” in Haiti, said Andre, “he would not have given the hold mine contracts of Haiti to Hillary’s brother, but he would have probably given them to his son-in-law.”

All-White Brazil Regime Guts Programs for Blacks and the Poor

The right-wing regime that took removed the Workers Party from power in Brazil is forging ahead with plans to put a 20-year freeze on social spending and gut programs for the poor, despite abysmal public approval levels. “There’s a sense from the big banks in Brazil, and from the national and multinational corporations, that they need to push through all of their agenda while they have this golden opportunity,” said Alexander Main, of the Center for Economic and Policy Research, in Washington. The Workers Party’s political base “comes from the North of Brazil, the Blacker parts of Brazil,” said Main, while the “entire government is white and male and pushing to dismantle” the progress made by Black Brazilians. Afro-descendants make up a majority of the population.

Happy Birthday to Philly Free School

April 15 marks the 5th anniversary of the Saturday Free School, located in the historic Church of the Advocate, in Philadelphia. “We base our method and theory on the works of W.E.B. Dubois and James Baldwin, because they explicitly rejected academia” and found the truth in “the lives of poor and working people,” said Nandita Chaturvedi, a student-teacher-organizer at the school. Last year’s national conference on the Black Radical Tradition, in Philadelphia, was largely the brainchild of activists with the Saturday Free School. A conference and birthday celebration is scheduled for this Saturday, the 15th.

Mumia’s Liver Severely Damaged

“In prison, money is the master; the ill are all but ignored,” said Mumia Abu Jamal, the nation’s best known political prisoner, in a commentary for Prison Radio. Abu Jamal won a two-year battle to force the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to treat his hepatitis-C, a virus that infects thousands of other inmates. New tests show “not only that I have advanced hepatitis-C, I have cirrhosis of the liver, because the DOC didn’t want to spend the money to treat my infection,” he said. “The DOC said it would cost them $600 million. It may only cost me my life.”

Black Agenda Radio on the Progressive Radio Network is hosted by Glen Ford and Nellie Bailey. A new edition of the program airs every Monday at 11:00am ET on PRN. Length: one hour.
