European Commission still trying to ram through the renewal of the licence for Roundup

23 November 2017 — SumOfUs

Fresh from its latest glyphosate defeat, the European Commission is still trying to ram through the renewal of the licence for Monsanto’s favourite weedkiller.

After EU member states voted down a ten-year license, the chemical lobby couldn’t even secure a five-year one either. But rather than accept that this battle is lost, the European Commission is still doing the handiwork for Monsanto, trying to ram through the relicensing in yet another meeting, with yet more votes.

Next Monday, government representatives and the European Commission are scheduled to meet yet again in Brussels at an Appeal Committee, where the fate or future of glyphosate could be decided once and for all.

If after a third try member states can’t agree, the European Commission can use special powers to push through its original proposal. This means we could have glyphosate imposed on Europe when there is no agreement for it to be relicenced.

There is one man at the Commission who could intervene and stop this immediately. That man is Jean-Claude Juncker, the Commission President. He has the power to tell his officials to stop the rush to relicense glyphosate. It’s clear that there isn’t enough support in Europe for it. So we need to show President Juncker that he should listen to the over 1.3 million Europeans who want to see an end to glyphosate.

Can you take 3 minutes and send a message to Jean-Claude Juncker?

We’ve made super cool tool that makes it really easy to email Juncker. And it shouldn’t take more than 3 minutes — we promise, we’ve timed it! We have suggested some text you might want to use, but it really is better to try and put things into your own words.

Our community can be really proud of how we’ve come together literally in the 100,000s alongside friends, allies and partners from all over Europe. We know our campaign is being successful because the Commission can’t get the votes it needs for its pro-Monsanto position on glyphosate.

Let’s come together again and see this through to the end. We have a real chance of winning and ending the use of glyphosate on our fields.

Can you send a message to the European Commission President now?
