Africa is facing a new and devastating colonial invasion driven by a determination to plunder the natural resources of the continent, especially its strategic energy and mineral resources. That’s the message from a damning new report from War On Want ‘The New Colonialism: Britain’sscramble for Africa’s energy and mineral resources’ that highlights the role of the British government in aiding and abetting the process.

Update: There are now 14,43o signatures. Government has to respond to all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures but so far, three days in, there’s no sign of a response.
A new petition has been launched to bolster the campaign to hold Tony Blair to account by obtaining a House of Commons’ vote holding him in contempt of Parliament. It doesn’t get the murderer in court but at least it’s something. Get 100,000 signatures and they have to debate it in Parliament.

Health Minister Jeremy Hunt has a secret plan to force through changes to local NHS services to cut costs. The changes – called “sustainability and transformation plans” – are being kept secret. But they could mean cuts to hospital beds, local walk-in centres or family planning services near you.
First drafts of the plans have already been drawn up across England. Because they’re secret, it’s hard to say exactly which services near you are at risk. But the plans for one area have been leaked and show the scale of the threat – they include axing 500 hospital beds and some emergency ambulances. No wonder Jeremy Hunt doesn’t want us to see them!
The best way to stop these cuts is to get them out in the open and demand the public has a say. So please can you sign the petition now, demanding that Jeremy Hunt publishes his plans for local NHS cuts? It only takes 30 seconds to add your name:

It’s Time To Take Power Back
Welcome to prime minister Theresa May’s new regime: it represents perhaps the most authoritarian, racist and austerity-obsessed government in British history.
Britain is now being run by an unelected leader presiding over a draconian surveillance-state, hell-bent on accelerating war on the poor and vulnerable, at home and abroad. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the official opposition to this regime is falling apart.
The fight to reclaim our democracy must be ramped up. Now.
1. Not to file too fine a point onto David Cameron’s head, but he certainly made a right cock-up of that one didn’t he? A regular old Thomas Hardy he conjured, didn’t he? Here he comes home, having stuck his thumb into the EU pie, felt one or more things round and soft– “a plum!” he thinks, “What a good boy am I!”– and pulls out hard, only to discover that the softs and rounds were his own testicles. Oh, the shock, and pain, of recognition. Fecking brilliant.

How Police Forces suffer 10 data breaches every week and still want more of your data.
A Big Brother Watch Report July 2016
Safe in Police hands? shows that between June 2011 and December 2015 there were at least 2,315 data breaches conducted by police staff. Over 800 members of staff accessed personal information without a policing purpose and information was inappropriately shared with third parties more than 800 times. Specific incidents show officers misusing their access to information for financial gain and passing sensitive information to members of organised crime groups.

The European Union has responded to the UK referendum vote to withdraw from the EU, and the resulting intensification of the political, economic and social crisis of Europe, by calling for the militarization of the continent and buildup of its internal security forces. Since the announcement of the result 11 days ago, a number of high-level foreign policy papers have been published that advocate the transformation of the EU into a military alliance with expanded powers of internal repression.
The Silence of the “Progressive Left”: Brexit, Euro-Austerity and the Neoliberal T-TIP By Michael Hudson
4 July 2016 — CounterPunch
The media in the United States have treated the British vote against remaining in the European Union (EU) as if it is populist “Trumpism,” an inarticulate right-wing vote out of ignorance at being left behind by the neoliberal economic growth policy. The fact that Donald Trump happened to be in Scotland to promote his golf course helped frame the U.S. story that depicts the Brexit vote as a “Trump vs. Hillary” psychodrama – populist anger and resentment vs. intelligent policy.
What is left out of this picture is that there is a sound logic to oppose membership in the EU. It is Nigel Farage’s slogan, “Take Back Control.”
