Iraq’s Lost Children
Afif Sarhan, IOL Correspondent
For nations the young generation always holds the hope for a better future but with thousands of its children forced out of school into the labor market to make ends meet, Iraq seems to be an exception. “My mother told me that I had to leave school and even knowing there isn’t choice, I tried to convince by showing my good marks in math and science but it just made her angrier,” says Waleed Saleh, 11. One year ago his father, a waiter, was killed in a suicide attack on his restaurant in downtown Baghdad. Saleh, the elder of his four brothers, had to find a job to help support the family with his house-keeper mother…

Occupied Iraq has the Largest Number of Prisons in the World
Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq (AMSI)
Sahar Yasiri says “Iraq is the number one country having the largest number of prisons in the world where there are more than 400 thousand Iraqi detainees including 6500 children and 10 thousand women.” This is the first part of long interview translated by AMSI English Web Team. The representative of the Federation of prisoners and political prisoners, Iraqi lawyer Sahar Yasiri clarified that the number of camps and prisons in all governorates of Iraq reaches to 36 except the Abu Ghraib prison, which turns as the best among the other prisons despite the terrible conditions…

Abbas’s Presidential Guard fighting opposition to Israeli occupation
ERNESTO PARAMO, Palestine Think Tank
Three people were injured on Tuesday, following the deployment to the Jenin governorship last Saturday of a large PA military force, which included the US trained Presidential Guard, to squelch any resistance to the brutal and murderous Israeli occupation, in what has been called “Operation Smile and Hope”, a military operation which will encompass some 50 villages and towns. The government of George W Bush has so far spent $28 million in training and equipment to make sure that Mahmoud Abbas is able to deliver his country and his people before the end of the year, as promised. This effort is considered vital if the US is going to be able to finalize a pace agreement by the end of the year between the Palestinian Authority and Israel…

Fierce Fighting In Baghdad – Shortages Abound
RTTNews
Humanitarian groups reported shortages of food, water, and medicine in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as fierce street battles between U.S.-led forces and Shiite militias have intensified. Authorities in Baghdad are preparing for an exodus of thousands of people from the eastern parts of the city. The government has warned of an imminent push to clear the areas of members of the militia, the Mehdi army, which owes allegiance to the anti-U.S. cleric, Muqtada Sadr. In the last seven weeks, around 1,000 have died and more than 2,500 injured, reports said…

Guantánamo judge rules Omar Khadr, arrested at 15, can be tried as war criminal
Bill Van Auken
Omar Khadr, a Canadian who was shot and detained by US Special Forces troops in Afghanistan in July 2002 when he was 15 years old, goes before a drumhead military tribunal at the US detention camp in Guantánamo, Cuba today. Arrested as a child, he is now charged as a war criminal and faces a possible sentence of life in prison if convicted by the US military officers who are to decide his fate. Of all the many violations of international law committed by Washington in its “global war on terrorism” the prolonged detention and now prosecution of this youth is undoubtedly one of the most repugnant…

Gaza Diary: Newborn Palestinians
Omar, a humanitarian worker, in partnership with Oxfam
…I asked myself the other day, when our child is finally born, what will the hospital records read; height, weight, Muslim, and Palestinian? What does Palestinian mean now? It means no clean water, no security, no freedom of movement and no certainty. As a father, I will try my best to guarantee a future for my child. But in Gaza, there is uncertainty not only for my family but for the 1.5 million people that live here. We have no petrol to put in our cars. Though I have managed so far I will now have to convert my car to run on domestic gas so that I can take my wife to the hospital. This is dangerous but most Gazans have to do this because of the lack of delivered fuel supplies. Lack of fuel is severely affecting hospitals in particular. Many doctors and nurses can no longer get to work and ambulances have no fuel to reach the sick and injured…

Shaping More Powerful Arguments for Palestine
Anne Selden Annab
Following the lead of many others, in “Sinkable Israel,” Ayman El-Amir writing for Al-Ahram(1) compared the plight of the Palestinians to that of the Native Americans… Sinkable Israel, would sink much faster if Arab writers realized that they undermine their own arguments by trying to equate the devastation of early Native American communities to modern Israel’s barbarically modern and intentional ethnic cleansing of historic Palestine. Zionist propaganda makes Israel float. Zionists want Americans to believe that “Israel” is a worthy and a necessary investment. You don’t need to convince Arabs (or Muslims) that racist Israel is wrong- you need to convince all the taxpayers and charities in the West, especially Americans, that Israel is really is a rogue nation in long term and flagrant violation of international law and the Palestinians basic human rights…

“Liberal” Israelis: Still Crying And Shooting After All These Years
Lawrence of Cyberia
“Crying and shooting” is the term used in Israeli political discourse to describe those Israelis who agonize over what they are doing to the Palestinians, but carry on doing it anyway. It’s a way for Israelis to feel better about themselves, by reasserting their liberal, progressive and humanitarian values, even as they carry out illiberal, regressive and murderous actions. There was a wonderful example of the phenomenon last week in a column written for Ha’aretz by Bradley Burston. He wrote an agonized column – Our Defense Forces, our war crimes, our terrorism – about the disproportionate number of civilians among the Palestinians killed by the IDF, and specifically about Israeli’s collective refusal to acknowledge their responsibility for the killings. But his column is like one of those non-apologies you make when you know you should apologize for something, but you’re not really sorry. When instead of saying “I’m sorry for what I did”, you say “I’m sorry if you were offended”, as if it’s the offended feelings that are the problem, not the fact that you said something offensive in the first place…

Clashes erupt in Lebanon as Hezbollah stages labor strike
SAM F. GHATTAS, Associated Press Writer
Lebanon’s long-simmering political crisis erupted into gunfire and explosions Wednesday when a labor strike devolved into clashes between rival Hezbollah and government supporters. Demonstrators supported by militant Hezbollah protested the U.S.-backed government’s economic policies and paralyzed much of Beirut with roadblocks of burning tires. The strike turned violent when both sides began throwing stones at each other, and gunfire and explosions rang out in some areas for brief periods. The cause of the explosions was not immediately known. There were a few injuries reported, mostly from the stone throwing. The clashes threatened to degenerate into an all-out sectarian conflict. Shiite Hezbollah seized the offices of a major Sunni group and the fighting spread to several mixed Sunni-Shiite neighborhoods. The Sunnis’ spiritual leader denounced the militant Shiite faction and appealed to the Islamic world to intervene…

Tension escalates as Hezbollah besieges Lebanon airport
Ya Libnan
Tension went high between Hezbollah and Premier Fouad Siniora’s government on Wednesday as the party besieged Beirut airport and headed to declaring civil disobedience after eight people were wounded in mushrooming rioting. Scores of Hezbollah trucks and bulldozers erected barricades along the airport road, besieging at least 300 passengers who had arrived aboard four jetliners. Hezbollah officials informed mediators that the airport would remain closed and the ongoing riots would be escalated into civil disobedience until the Siniora Government withdraws decisions it had adopted against the Party’s communications network and head of the airport security department Wafiq Shoqeir. Meanwhile, the Voice of Lebanon radio said Hezbollah members were dressed up in police uniforms and penetrating districts of Beirut controlled by their rivals of the Mustaqbal movement…

Guantánamo’s Unknow Prisoners
Who are the Prisoners Released with Sami al-Haj?
ANDY WORTHINGTON
Late on Thursday evening, I joined in the widespread celebrations — at least in those parts of the world that care about the injustice of holding people in prison without charge or trial — that attended the repatriation of al-Jazeera journalist Sami al-Haj from Guantánamo, his home for the last six years, to Sudan. Although a few news outlets have briefly mentioned some of the other men released with Sami — two of his compatriots, a Moroccan and five Afghans — their stories remain largely unknown. However, as a result of the research I undertook for my book The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison, I’m able to shine some light on their stories, which otherwise are unlikely to receive much coverage — if at all — outside their home countries…

Iran clerics rebuke Ahmadinejad over ‘hidden imam’
AFP
Iranian clerics have told President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to stick to more worldly issues after he said the “hidden imam” of Shiite Islam was directing the country’s affairs. Ahmadinejad has always been a devotee of the Mahdi, the twelfth imam of Shiite Islam, who Shiites believe disappeared more than a thousand years ago and who will return one day to usher in a new era of peace and harmony. But in a speech to theology students broadcast by state television on Monday, Ahmadinejad went further than ever before in emphasising his belief that the Mahdi is playing a critical role in Iran’s day-to-day politics…

GOOGLE’S ‘ROBOTS’ UNMASKED
Desert Peace
In Google’s continuing attempt to silence the pro-Palestinian community on the Blogesphere, they have been claiming that it is ‘Robots’ that are locking blogs, not actual people. In a post I wrote yesterday I countered that claim with the charge that it is a well organised cell of zionists at work. That very ‘cell’ I spoke of now openly confesses and are proud to make Google censor the anti-zionist websites! “In addition to illustrating the latest news and events listed on this Israel 60 mother of all blogs, we are optimizing this news and event blog as we do all news and feature content on the Israel News Agency. The Israel 60 Birthday Website will combat Palestine, Iran, Nazi and Syria sites which have started to attack Israel’s 60th birthday by enjoying a stronger search engine optimization (SEO) marketing and public relations ranking on Google and appearing throughout the Net using all of the tools of Web 2.0.” The above is taken from the official site of The Israeli News Agency.

Walls and War Crimes
Felicity Arbuthnot
Baghdad’s Sadr City (formerly named Al Thawa in the 1950's, then Medina al Saddam – Saddam City) dismissively and degradingly dubbed ‘a slum’, by the main stream media, has suffered grievously. Grindingly poor, proud, with both the criminality that poverty brings and the hardest of working, determined never to sink to it – and all the complexities in between, Sadr City is now America’s latest victim. In Washington’s unique interpretation of ‘liberation’, it is being walled in, so residents have no escape – and the trapped bombed. Add your own metaphor, starting with General Norman Schwartzkopf’s 1991: ‘Turkey shoot.’ This is the neighborhood-wide equivalent of the homicidal maniac with arsonist tendencies, who locks in the familiy, pours gasoline over the surrounds and through the letter box, following up with a few lighted matches…

Probably The Google Team didn’t look up carefully since Uruknet publishes regularly original articles…; 3) The Google Team writes “We currently don’t include sites that are primarily news aggregators.” This is patently false because Google News does include a lot of websites that are primarily or exclusively news aggregators.

U.S.-Iran security talks postponed indefinitely, Iraq reports
The Associated Press
The Iraqi foreign minister said Wednesday that security talks between Iran and the United States had been indefinitely postponed because of an “exchange of accusations” between the sides. As Washington escalated its accusation of Iranian backing for extremists, Tehran on Monday called off further Iraq security talks with the United States until American forces stopped their crackdown on Shiite militias. U.S.-led forces have been engaging in fierce street battles in Sadr City, a Shiite militia stronghold in Baghdad. “It is impossible to hold a new round because of exchange of accusations between the two sides,” Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told a news conference Wednesday in Baghdad. “The negotiations are postponed indefinitely because of tense atmosphere.”…

Shimon Peres: The lying old man
Khalid Amayreh
Does Shimon Peres carry the genes of a pathological liar? The question may sound facetious to many, but Peres’s apparent inability to distinguish between truth and falsehood makes the question quite valid. At 84, Peres continues to dish out a daily staple of lies, including obscene lies. This week, the “hero” of the Qana-1 massacre, told foreign correspondents based in Israel that “Hamas was standing in the way of Palestinian statehood.” Well, this is, of course, a blatant lie, to say the least, because every honest person under the sun, Jew or gentile, knows well that the main obstacle impeding the realization of peace in the Middle East has been the intensive colonization of Palestinian land and unending expansion of Jewish settlements on occupied territories that belong to another people….

Too quiet in Gaza’s harbor
Mohammed Omer, The Electronic Intifada
It’s been strangely quiet for some time at the port in Gaza. No clanging of hooks, no sounds of creaking cranes or of thumping of nets upon decks. Boat engines, normally puttering and spewing exhaust, lie entombed under covers. Of the 40,000 fishermen and others who make a living from the catch, only about 700 are still busy, according to the Fishing Syndicate in Gaza. The boats need oil, and Israel will not let the fishermen have it. “Gaza’s 3,000 fishermen need about 40,000 liters of fuel and 40,000 liters of natural gas a day to operate for this season from March until the end of May,” says Nizar Ayash, director of the Fishing Syndicate. Now they get almost nothing…

Democrats Prepare Sell-Out on Telecom Immunity: House Leaders to Give White House a Blank Check to Spy on Americans
