IRAQ: ‘Special Weapons’ Have a Fallout on Babies
Ali al-Fadhily and Dahr Jamail*
Babies born in Fallujah are showing illnesses and deformities on a scale never seen before, doctors and residents say. The new cases, and the number of deaths among children, have risen after “special weaponry” was used in the two massive bombing campaigns in Fallujah in 2004. After denying it at first, the Pentagon admitted in November 2005 that white phosphorous, a restricted incendiary weapon, was used a year earlier in Fallujah. In addition, depleted uranium (DU) munitions, which contain low-level radioactive waste, were used heavily in Fallujah. The Pentagon admits to having used 1,200 tonnes of DU in Iraq thus far…

U.S. Senate report implicates Irangate figures in misleading Pentagon on war with Iraq
Yossi Melman, Haaretz
Nearly two decades after luring the United States and Israel into selling arms to Iran’s ayatollahs in exchange for the release of hostages held by Hezbollah in Lebanon, in a deal that became known as Irangate or the Iran-Contra affair, Michael Ledeen and Manouchehr Ghorbanifar are back in the spotlight, starring in a new political and intelligence scandal. This time, however, they are involved not only in an attempt to go behind the backs of the U.S. State Department and the Central Intelligence Agency and to persuade the Bush Administration to establish secret contacts with the Iranian regime but are also suspected of being manipulated, unwitting, by Iranian intelligence. A new report by the U.S. Senate suggests that Iranian intelligence used Ledeen and Ghorbanifar to feed disinformation to neoconservatives in the administration of President George W. Bush in a bid to encourage a U.S. invasion of Iraq in order to defeat Saddam Hussein, Iran’s arch-enemy. The new affair is another chapter in the book of Bush administration intrigues, plots and conspiracies, all aimed at fabricating evidence to justify its decision to invade Iraq. The report, by the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, focuses on secret contacts in Rome in 2001-2003…

Gaza Diary: Seeking summer joy
Omar, a humanitarian aid worker, in partnership with Oxfam
Our twins are now off for the summer. The next three months are supposed to be a time for creativity and relaxation – a time for my kids to be their age, play with other children and have fun. When Leila and Yasser finished school last week I took some time off to be with them. Last year, I took them to the beach, which is perhaps the only place where we can breathe in Gaza. But nowadays the beach has become a public health hazard; more than 70 million litres of sewage are discharged into the sea every day. The sea is no longer a venue for children looking for a swim. This year we spent our family holidays without electricity and I could not take my four children anywhere to play or visit relatives because my car is completely out of fuel…

Hamas: Israel mini-cabinet decision reveals its previous intents against Gaza
Palestinian Information Center
he Hamas Movement stated Wednesday that the decision of the Israeli mini-cabinet to wage a large scale offensive against the Gaza Strip if the truce efforts failed reveals Israel’s premeditated intentions to justify its aggression on the Strip. Hebrew radio reported that the mini-cabinet called during its meeting at noon today on the Israeli war ministry to get prepared to wage a large-scale military operation against Gaza if the Egyptian efforts failed to reach calm with Hamas. In a press release received by the PIC, Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, underlined that this Israeli declaration of war on Gaza had received the blessing of the American administration during the Israeli premier’s last visit to Washington…

Mismarriage of Convenience
Trita Parsi
…It doesn’t have to be this way. Although Iran and Israel will not be signing any mutual defense pacts anytime soon, the two countries aren’t destined to be implacable foes. If anything, Israel could be a prime beneficiary of a rapprochement between Washington and Tehran. It might sound inconceivable that Iran, whose leaders since 1979 have used the most venomous rhetoric against the “little Satan,” would ever moderate its stance toward Israel. Yet a careful review of the past three decades shows that Iran’s hostile rhetoric is more a product of opportunism than fanaticism. Iran and Israel have even been willing to work together quietly at times, despite their conflicting ideologies. The reason is simple: When forced to choose, Tehran invariably chooses its geostrategic interests over its ideological impulses. In no other area is the decisiveness of the strategic dimension of Iran’s foreign policy clearer than when it comes to Israel. When these two pillars of Iranian foreign policy have clashed, as they did in the 1980s during the Iran-Iraq war, Iran’s geostrategic concerns have consistently prevailed. Tehran quietly sought Israel’s aid, and the Jewish state made many efforts to place Iran and the United States back on speaking terms. Faced with an invading Iraqi army and finding its U.S.-built weaponry starved of spare parts by a U.S. embargo, Tehran was in desperate need of help from Israel. Israel, in turn, was more than eager to avoid an Iraqi victory and to restore the traditional Israeli-Iranian! clandes tine security cooperation established under the shah, the mullahs’ fierce anti-Israeli rhetoric notwithstanding…

U.S. Enlists And Arms Patrols in Sadr City
‘Neighborhood Guards’ Modeled on Program In Sunni Areas of Iraq
Amit R. Paley, Washington Post Foreign Service
Young men armed and paid by the U.S. military took to the streets of the Iraqi capital’s Sadr City area for the first time Wednesday to guard their neighborhoods, part of a new strategy designed to recruit former Shiite militiamen to American-created security groups, U.S. officials said. The program is modeled after a more than year-old initiative, now known as the Awakening movement, to pay men formerly aligned with the Sunni insurgency to turn against it. But the new groups, called “Neighborhood Guards” by the Americans and “Sons of Iraq” by Iraqis, are the first to focus solely on a heavily Shiite area and among the few to acknowledge arming civilians…

Israel accelerates settlement expansion after Annapolis
Adri Nieuwhof, The Electronic Intifada
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and US President George W. Bush follow contradictory policy tracks. In the major media offensive accompanying last November’s US-sponsored Annapolis peace conference both leaders presented themselves as the peace makers of the region. In Annapolis, Olmert committed to freezing settlement expansion. However, since that time according to numerous sources ranging from Israeli newspapers, to Peace Now, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, as well as the websites of the Israeli Central Bureau, and the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Olmert’s government has been accelerating illegal settlement expansion on occupied Palestinian land. Six months since Annapolis the planning of settlements has accelerated..

The reality is that Iraqi authority would be nominal
Patrick Cockburn
In practice, there is less to the American “concessions” than would first appear. The reaction in Iraq to the US demands for the long-term use of military bases and other rights has been so furious that Washington is now offering limited concessions in the negotiations. For example, the US is lowering the number of bases it wants from 58 to “the low dozens” and says it is willing to compromise on legal immunity for foreign contractors according to information leaked to The Independent. George Bush is willing to modify some of the demands so the Iraqi government can declare “a significant climbdown” by the American side allowing Baghdad to sign the treaty by 31 July…

Beirut rejects Olmert peace feeler
Daily Star
Lebanon on Wednesday rejected a call by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for peace talks and demanded that Israel withdraw from occupied territory along the international border. “There are pending bilateral issues between Lebanon and Israel which are governed by international resolutions which Israel must respect … and which cannot be the object of political negotiations,” a government statement said. “Israel … must respect Lebanon’s sovereignty over its territory and its water, release prisoners and provide maps on mines and cluster bombs,” left in Lebanon during past conflicts, it said….

America, the Real Terrorist
The World As We Know It
Over the years America has waged war with countries, forcibly occupied territories and murdered millions of men, women and children. Dropped nuclear bombs on Japan, destroyed Vietnam’s ecosystem with Agent Orange, and has created such an atmosphere in Iraq that radiation levels have been compared to twenty five thousand bombs used in Nagasaki. As I take you on this journey through pain and suffering, we shall see an insight into American wars, why is there war and what are the benefits of war? More importantly we will run through the effects of war on the common citizens of the country….

They raised concerns about the weapons used by American forces in 2004 during the war in Iraq – and are now questioning whether there could be any links with the deformities. As a result of seeing our exclusive report, one of the world’s leading authorities on foetal medicine, Professor Kypros Nicolaides, has decided to offer three scholarships to obstetricians in Fallujah… at Fallujah’s Children’s Hospital one doctor told us in the past month she’s seen one or two cases of birth deformities every day….

HAPPY DAYS – Part I: Human Rights Watch’s Amnesia
Gabriele Zamparini, The Cat’s Blog
Dear John Biaggi, I’m sure you’re very busy with the HRW Film Festival these days, but there is an urgent matter I’d kindly like you to consider. I’ve just read in the Village Voice an article that reads: The body count at the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival rivals any in Hollywood’s summer shoot-’em-ups: 400,000 killed in Laos; 250,000 slaughtered in Chechnya; 40,000 murdered in Chad; 3,000 Chileans disappeared under Pinochet; 1,000 Lebanese felled by Israeli bombs. Now add Iraq to the equation—some 90,000 violent civilian deaths and counting, according to IraqBodyCount.org—and you have a serious accounting of carnage, both past and present, reflected at this year’s 19th annual event. [The Political Is Personal at the Human Rights Watch Fest. Putting a human face on global atrocity. by Anthony Kaufman June 3rd, 2008] From the article I don’t understand if the figures about Iraq taken from Iraq Body Count has been adopted by HRW or it was just an insert from the Village Voice’s journalist…

As you surely know, the best estimates indicate the real figure is likely in excess of one million dead.

Strategy of Mid-East tension
xymphora
It is nothing short of preposterous to blame speculators for the rise in the price of oil. Speculators have no interest in the price of the commodity; they make money by betting on changes in the price (another sign that you are deep in Conspiracyland is when people who should know better write obvious nonsense). As soon as other speculators see that a commodity is in play, they bet against the trend caused by the (very) temporary bubble, and that betting forces the price back down. Any effect of speculation must be very short term. What we are seeing with oil prices is an almost constant rise. The rise in oil prices is caused directly by a strategy of tension in the Middle East, a strategy that is utterly and completely inspired by Zionism…

When AIPAC Went Missing
Whatever Happened to “Democracy Now?”
MUHAMMAD IDREES AHMAD
It is with some alarm and dismay that I watched Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now” provide platform to right-wing Paksitani journalist Ahmad Rashid, long an apologist for Bush’s war-on-terror, to recycle propaganda from British tabloid press and other discredited sources. His tale about al-Qa’ida recruiting white converts for terrorist acts in Europe originated with the British security services as part of their fearmongering campaign to build support for the 42-day detention without charge plan. No shred of evidence was ever offered. Equally bogus are his claims of organized al-Qa’ida ‘training camps’, where recruits are offered foreign language training etc. Once again, these claims are the products of the vivid imaginations of the terrorologists proliferating in the war on terror fear factory. I suggest Goodman ask Rashid to substantiate claims, or issue a retraction. (When he claims ‘Iraq is an Arab problem’ and that it would be resolved when its neighbours ‘stop interfering’, I would have liked Goodman to at least ask if he was aware the country is under U.S. occupation.)…

U.S. security talks with Iraq in trouble in Baghdad and D.C.
Leila Fadel and Warren P. Strobel | McClatchy Newspapers
A proposed U.S.-Iraqi security agreement that would set the conditions for a defense alliance and long-term U.S. troop presence appears increasingly in trouble, facing growing resistance from the Iraqi government, bipartisan opposition in Congress and strong questioning from Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. President Bush is trying to finish the agreement before he leaves office, and senior U.S. officials insist publicly that the negotiations can be completed by a July 31 target date. The U.S. is apparently scaling back some of its demands, including backing off one that particularly incenses Iraqis, blanket immunity for private security contractors…

Ha’aretz Thinks Israel’s Arab Citizens Are Settlers
Lawrence of Cyberia
Well, this is an unfortunate choice of words by Yoav Stern for today’s Ha’aretz.com: Israeli Arabs will distribute 20,000 booklets on the Nakba – the “catastrophe,” what happened to the Palestinians after 1948 – outside of schools in Arab settlements throughout the country. A camera crew from the Qatar-based Al Jazeera television network will cover the handing out of the booklets tomorrow at 11 A.M… So, Israel’s Arab citizens live in “settlements”, like Israelis live in settlements in the Occupied Territories? Interesting equivalence there between non-Jewish Israeli citizens, who have lived on their own land from time immemorial but happen to find themselves currently living under a sectarian system of government based on Jewish privilege, and Israel’s settlers in the Occupied Territories, who have immigrated onto land expropriated from its legal owners in defiance of the Geneva Conventions and whose legitimacy is unrecognized by any other nation on earth…
