Gaza assault enters third week – Dozens killed since midnight – Death toll nears 1,000
Ma’an news
Five Palestinians were killed in separate strikes near Gaza City and in the Jabaliya Refugee Camp on Sunday evening. Despite a so-called lull in fighting for the delivery of humanitarian aid, Israeli shelling killed two Palestinians in the Ash-Shuja’eiyah neighborhood, which is east of Gaza City. Meanwhile, two others died in the northern Gaza Strip refugee camp of Jabaliya, local sources told Ma’an, adding that specifically the Al-Jurn area was hit in the deadly attack. Those three victims were identified as Mus’ab Khader, Husein Abu Sulkltan and 15-year-old Amal A’lush. A number of others were injured. Also, Israeli warplanes shelled the home of Mohammad Dahlan in the Ar-Remal neighborhood of Gaza City. Jets also hit the home of Shadi Abu Labad in Beit Lahiya, northern Gaza Strip…

Report direct from Gaza
Day 16 of Israeli War On Gaza
Informative Report on Gaza War: Death toll 880, wounded 3620
Sameh A. Habeeb
Several untold stories still under the rubbles of Gaza devastation. The more time this war lasts the more victims fall down, their stories buried with them. Most of the Gaza Strip plunges into deep darkness since the start of this war. I find several hardships to send out this report due to power problem. Today, a rocket targeted my uncle’s house. My house got several splinters and rocket shrapnel. Thanks to God, we all safe but I don’t know what will happen next.
This is a new report for the 16th day of Gaza War and the outcomes of Israeli invasion…

Gaza: injured, denied access
Ewa Jasiewicz
Friday night, Red Crescent ambulances in Jabaliya collected numerous victims of smoke inhalation: a strange chemical smoke which seizes the lungs and air passage, and suffocates the victims. Many elderly were collected in turns, and a 3 month old baby was brought in held by a sobbing mother. At least, at least we were able to reach them. A Palestinian Red Crescent dispatcher has received what he says is hundreds of calls from the northern Gaza area alone, which have been left unanswered as the areas are under Israeli military occupation…

When One People’s “National Liberation Movement” Is Another People’s Genocide
Lawrence of Cyberia
…So the violence that plagues the history of Zionist settlement in Palestine is not an inexplicable outgrowth of the irrational Arab Mind, it is the necessary tool for imposing on a diverse population an ideology that separates out people according to their ethnic-religious background and allows the full benefits of citizenship only to that one particular minority deemed to have the “right” heritage. For the preexisting Arab population, i.e. the people who are on the receiving end of Zionism and always had to be if it were to be put into practice in Palestine, Zionism is NOT a benevolent ideology, but an inherently violent one that cannot be realized except through their own collective destruction. And it is not an ideology that targets its violence only, or primarily, at “terrorists”. Because the most difficult enemy of Zionism is not the small minority of Palestinians who take up arms against it, but the large majority that doesn’t. There is no kinder, gentler Zionism that would have allowed the vast majority of ordinary Palestinian men, women and children to live as free and equal citizens in a Zionist state if only the Arabs had been more understanding. It is the existence of the Muslim and Christian majority – not its behavior – that gives offense to Zionism, because just by daring to exist on their own land the Palestinian people are the undoing of the “Jewish and democratic” state…

Pictures of some of Hamas’ most wanted terrorists
Khalid Amayreh
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday released the pictures of some of Hamas’ most wanted “terrorists” it said it has killed since the start of the Israeli onslaught in the Gaza Strip more two weeks ago.An Israeli spokesman told foreign reporters in Jerusalem that the world community, especially Americans and Europeans, shouldn’t be deceived by the ostensibly young age of the killed terrorists. “They may look young to you and me. But these people are terrorists at heart. Don’t look at their deceptively innocent faces, try to think of the demons inside each of them.” The spokesman, Nachman Abramovic, said he was “absolutely certain” that these people would grow to be “evil terrorists if we allowed them to grow.” “If you were in our shoes, would you allow them to grow to kill your children or finish them off right now”?…

Israel sets up mini-Guantamo for Gaza Palestinians
normal family, Daily Kos
Buried among the ever more alarming information concerning abuses and international humanitarian law violations committed by Israeli forces in the course of their operations in Gaza is information that has emerged regarding the transfer of Palestinian detainees to a military facility inside Israel. There, dozens of detainees are being held for interrogation as “unlawful combatants”, in violation of international humanitarian law, which prohibits such transfers. ..

Israels “Cast Lead” Operation & Mass Executions
Kawther Salam
The Israeli military Operation “Cast Lead” is based on ethnic cleansing of the ittihad_news-4families of Palestinian politicians and resistance in Gaza. According to the cabinet of the criminal Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak, and the chief of the Israeli intelligence, Yuval Diskin, the military Operation “Cast Lead” must put an end to some political activists, Palestinian resistance and their families as the only solution to “decrease the terror” of revenge against Israel. According to these Israeli war criminals, the murder of the families of Palestinian political activists and resistance fighters is very important for the security of Israel. By murdering their families, Israel will guarantee that no revenge would be possible in the future…

Israel reinforces army before ‘third phase’ of war in Gaza
Martin Fletcher, Times
Israel began sending army reservists into Gaza last night in a further escalation of its war against Hamas. The move came hours after Ehud Olmert, the Prime Minister, had raised hopes that the offensive could be approaching its end when he told his Cabinet that Israel was “nearing the goals it set” when it began Operation Cast Lead 17 days ago. But Mr Olmert signalled that there would be a few more days of fighting yet when he added: “We must not, at the last minute, lose what has been achieved in an unprecedented national effort that restored the spirit of unity to the nation . . . The Israeli public, especially the residents of the south, have the patience and willingness – so does the Government.”..

Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine
As the aggression against our people escalates, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine is calling upon all international progressive forces for the widest popular participation of all sectors of society in mass demonstrations and actions in the streets in solidarity and support for the Palestinian people in Gaza, as well as the escalation and expansion of direct action, particularly the takeover of embassies of Israel and its allies. Take some kittens, put them in a box, and jump on the box
Vittorio Arrigoni, Guerrilla Radio Blog
“Take some kittens, some tender little moggies in a box”, said Jamal, a surgeon at the Al Shifa, Gaza’s main hospital, while a nurse actually placed a couple of blood-stained cardboard boxes in front of us. “Seal up the box, then jump on it with all your weight and might, until you feel their little bones crunching, and you hear the last muffled little mew.” I stared at the boxes in astonishment, and the doctor continued: “Try to imagine what would happen after such images were circulated. The righteous outrage of public opinion, the complaints of the animal rights organisations…” The doctors went on in this vein, and I was unable to take my eyes off those boxes, sitting at our feet. “Israel trapped hundreds of civilians inside a school as if in a box, including many children, and then crushed them with all the might of its bombs. What were the world’s reactions? Almost nothing. We would have been better off as animals rather than Palestinians, we would have been more protected.” At this point the doctor leans towards one of the boxes, and takes its lid off in front of me. Inside it are the amputated limbs, legs and arms, some from the knee down, others with the entire femur attached, amputated from the injured at the Al Fakhura United Nations school in Jabalia, which resulted in more than fifity casualties…

Welcome to Hell: Gaza’s unending misery
Ibrahim Barzak, Kim Sengupta, Geoffrey Lean and David Randall
…Death from the skies is not the only threat facing Gaza’s children. Medical facilities are stretched almost to breaking point, and no one can vouch for this better than Dr Al-Jarou. He is at the Shifa, Gaza’s biggest hospital, where about 70 patients are in intensive care, among them his daughter Yasmine. They cling to life through four generators working round the clock at a hospital which has been without power for the past seven days because Gaza’s sole power plant has stopped working due to lack of fuel. “How terrible it would be,” Dr Hassan Khalaf, the hospital’s director, said, “if our patients survive attacks – and then die because of a lack of electricity.”…

Will AP ever stop lying for Israel?
DetainThis
In opening a scathing dismantlement of historical myths on Israel-Palestine, world-renowned investigative journalist, John Pilger, recently wrote: “When the truth is replaced by silence,” the Soviet dissident Yevgeny Yevtushenko said, “the silence is a lie.” When life-saving — arguably genocide-preventing — information is systematically and deliberately misreported and concealed by the world’s largest news organizations, you can safely consider it, too, an act of lying. On January 9, The Associated Press released a report titled “A look at the Islamic militant Hamas group.” Like virtually all AP reports on Israel-Palestine, it is loaded with examples of journalistic malpractice: omission of the most basic and vital facts, use of the most sensationalistic or flatly wrong language, contradictions, and untruths…

‘Some were decapitated. My cousin and his son died in front of me’
Rory McCarthy in Jerusalem and Hazem Balousha in Gaza City
…Nafaz Samouni, 42, estimated there were around 50 people in the house. “When the shelling started more than half of the people in the house were killed,” he said from al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City, where he was recovering from leg wounds. “Some were decapitated. My cousin and his son died in front of me.” His son Ahmad, 12, was shot in the arm and the chest – doctors said the bullet hit his heart. The boy was due to be transferred to hospital in Egypt. But Nafaz Samouni could not leave the house until medics from the International Committee of the Red Cross arrived on Wednesday afternoon, when Israel for the first time paused its fighting for three hours to allow in desperately needed aid. “We spent four days without food. We had just a kerosene lamp and very little water,” he said. “As we left we saw dead bodies around us. Dogs were eating them.”…
