The End of Hypocrisy: Crime’s Gleeful Abandon in Gaza
Chris Floyd
More and more, comment on Israel’s savage attack on the people of Gaza seems superfluous. The facts — even the modicum of facts that can be gleaned through the deadly wall of Israeli censorship and the perverse and sinister distortions of the American media — speak loudly, with horrifying clarity, for themselves. We are witnessing monstrous crimes, committed with cold deliberation: a bloodthirsty spectacle of unbridled terrorism, openly celebrated by the political and media elites of Israel and America. This is, of course, the same kind of moral insanity that has raged around the American terrorist attack on Iraq for many years. It is the same moral insanity that guides the actions of power in many lands, in increasingly brazen and unapologetic ways, with less and less of the shamefaced furtiveness that once surrounded such abominations as military aggression, torture, “ethnic cleansing” and other crimes of power down through the centuries. This furtiveness was hypocrisy, of course — but in hypocrisy there remains some vestige of the morality it falsely purports to uphold, some awareness that an evil thing is being done which must be hidden or disguised. But now the masks are falling away — or rather, they are being flung aside with gleeful abandon. America’s top officials — including the president and vice president — openly admit to ordering torture…and they are praised for it, even held up as shining examples for future leaders to follow…

Phosphorus denial outweighed by evidence
Michael Evans, Times
…Despite growing evidence, first revealed by The Times, that white phosphorus was being used by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) during attacks on Gaza, Israel’s military has denied firing shells with the chemical as a payload. Spokesmen for the IDF have repeatedly stated that Israel has used only weapons that meet international rules on warfare, and that it has not resorted to any system that other countries, including Nato members, have not deployed in past battles. The evidence that white phosphorus shells have been fired as a smoke screen is so compelling that the denials have increasingly lacked credibility…

An African-American in Gaza
The United Nations Equals Zero
VIJAY PRASHAD
Israeli contempt for the United Nations begins in the 1940s and continues to this day. On March 29, 1955, the Israeli cabinet sat for six hours, debating whether to invade the Gaza Strip (then under Egyptian control) to curtail cross-border attacks. Prime Minister Moshe Sharett pointed out that the United Nations resolution 181 (1947) created Israel. David Ben-Gurion, who had recently returned to the Cabinet as Defense Minister, interrupted him, “No, no, no. Only the daring of the Jews created the state, and not any oom-shmoom resolution.” Most of Israel’s leadership (Moshe Dayan, Shimon Peres, Golda Meir, Yigal Allon, and even Abba Eban) accepted Ben-Gurion’s position; all this long before the 1975 UN General Assembly resolution which equated Zionism with racism. That simply provided more fodder for a well-established contempt for the United Nations within Israel’s ruling circles. When Likud won the elections in 1977, it made hay of the UN resolution on Zionism. Responding to the first invasion of Lebanon (1978), the UN created the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) through resolution 425…

The Palestinians say: ‘This is a war of extermination’
Ahdaf Soueif in Egypt
Everyone says something new is going on here; something different. The residents of Egyptian Rafah are used to the sounds of rockets and shells exploding on the other side of their border, but they’ve never heard the sounds they’ve been hearing over the last 20 days. Twenty-five miles further into Egypt the general hospital at el-Arish is used to receiving the Palestinian wounded. The staff have never seen injuries like these before. The hospital forecourt is swarming with ambulances, paramedics, press. The wounded are raced into casualty. The Palestinians are mostly silent; each man working out where he finds himself and what he’s going to do. Fearing for their wounded and fearing for those they’ve left behind, they are silent but unfailingly courteous…

Our Palestinian Future in Israel: How Long Can We Be Dehumanised in a Racist State?
Get this slideshow here Khalil Nakhleh
…The only future for us, as an indigenous national minority that can exercise our inherited basic human rights on our land and that can achieve true justice and equality, is to reclaim and re-assert our narrative. We should seek to regain our status as part of our national Palestinian majority, in historical Palestine, as we struggle for the dismemberment and dissolution of the Zionist racist system and its transformation into a “normal” democratic system, responsive to the needs of all its citizens. Our future, as a national minority in and on our land, and as part of the Arab nation, is organically connected to the future of the Arab nation and to the entire Palestinian people – the communities in the West Bank and Gaza, the refugees, and all those dispersed throughout the world; and it has to be realised in a democratic society in historical Palestine, where we would be ready to co-exist with non-Zionist Jews. Our repossessed narrative cannot be a reinterpretation of our history as a dull shadow of Jewish-Zionist narrative. Our repossessed narrative must be based on the deconstruction of the racist Zionist-Ashkenazi system, which itself is a precondition for such a just solution. The existing Israeli system is, by definition, racist and exclusivist, and it is inherently and structurally incapable of providing justice and genuine equality to my Palestinian people…

Torturing a Teenager
Guantánamo’s Forgotten Child
ANDY WORTHINGTON
Just two weeks ago, in a habeas corpus case in a Washington D.C. court, Judge Richard Leon turned the clock back to January 11, 2002 (the day Guantánamo opened) by ruling that the U.S. government could continue holding two prisoners at Guantánamo — the Yemeni Muaz al-Alawi and the Tunisian Hisham Sliti — because the authorities had demonstrated, to his satisfaction, that they met the criteria for being regarded as “enemy combatants.” According to the definition of an “enemy combatant” that Leon himself had been obliged to choose from several options before proceeding with the cases, this meant that they were “part of or supporting Taliban or al-Qaeda forces, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the U.S. or its coalition partners,” which “includes any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported hostilities in aid of enemy armed forces.”…

Israel’s Message
Ilan Pappe
…But it is not only in military discourse that Palestinians are dehumanised. A similar process is at work in Jewish civil society in Israel, and it explains the massive support there for the carnage in Gaza. Palestinians have been so dehumanised by Israeli Jews – whether politicians, soldiers or ordinary citizens – that killing them comes naturally, as did expelling them in 1948, or imprisoning them in the Occupied Territories. The current Western response indicates that its political leaders fail to see the direct connection between the Zionist dehumanisation of the Palestinians and Israel’s barbarous policies in Gaza…

Israeli assault injures 1.5 million Gazans
Jonathan Cook
This week the death toll in Gaza passed the 1,000 mark, after nearly three weeks of Israeli air and ground attacks. But surprisingly, no one has reported an even more appalling statistic: that there are some 1.5 million injured Palestinians in Gaza. How is is possible that such an astounding figure could have passed the world’s media by? The reason apparently is that they have been relying on the highly unreliable statistics provided by official Palestinian sources. It appears that the Palestinian health ministry only records as wounded those Gazans who need to stay in hospital because of the severity of their injuries. That means they only count the more than 4,500 Gazans who have suffered injuries such as severe burns from exploding Israeli phosphorus shells; shrapnel wounds from artillery rounds; broken or lost limbs from aerial bombardment; bullet wounds; physical trauma from falling building debris; and so on. But in fact there is another, far more reasonable standard for assessing those injured, one that provides the far higher total of 1.5 million Gazans – or every surviving Palestinian in Gaza. The measure I am referring to is the one employed by Israel..

Israel versus America
Is the ‘special relationship’ over?
JUSTIN RAIMONDO
The role played by Israel as the catalyst for war in the Middle East was dramatically underscored the other day, when David Sanger of the New York Times reported Israel had requested access to “bunker-buster” bombs developed by the US, and also clearance for flying over Iraqi airspace to get at Iran. Both requests were denied. Tensions within the “special relationship” have been escalating ever since…Iran is the issue that has divided the US and Israel, and the gulf is only going to widen: that’s because the objective interests of the US and Israel are increasingly in conflict. That was the post-cold war trend, one that was ultimately exacerbated by the 9/11 terrorist attacks…

THE ISRAELI HUMAN SHIELD
By Abu al-Sous (Salah Mansour)*, via Desertpeace
During the Israeli war on Gaza, Western media propagated Israeli propaganda that the Palestinian resistance have been using their family members as human shields. Sadly, Israeli propaganda is often presented in Western media as facts, and the Israeli version has been accepted with little verification. The goal is simple: dehumanise the Palestinian by showing that he does not care about his family members, and once that is done it becomes much easier to accept him as a legitimist target…

Still Breathing…a Report from Gaza
The morgues of Gaza’s hospitals are over-flowing. The bodies in their blood-soaked white shrouds cover the entire floor space of the Shifa hospital morgue. Some are intact, most horribly deformed, limbs twisted into unnatural positions, chest cavities exposed, heads blown off, skulls crushed in. Family members wait outside to identify and claim a brother, husband, father, mother, wife, child. Many of those who wait their turn have lost numerous family members and loved ones. Blood is everywhere..

A burnt offering
William Bowles
…Let’s face it, we have lost something as human beings, here in the so-called developed world. Correction- something has been stolen from us. During the latter part of that 160 years, something central to our existence as human beings has been stolen from us by capitalism: our sense of belonging to one species; the human race. Undoubtedly the ideology of racism which is central to the culture of capitalism, is a major contributory factor as it divides us into two kinds of people, the human and the less than human, and guess which half the Palestinians belong to? But racism doesn’t explain it all, it’s just the most obvious manifestation of a deeper ailment, what Marx called alienation and the commensurate fetish of the commodity (and here was Marx using the word fetish long before Freud). Our lives are wrapped up with things, possessing things…

Video: UK Jewish MP: Israel acting like Nazis in Gaza
setfree68
“Israel was born out of Jewish Terrorism” Tzipi Livnis Father was a Terrorist” Astonishing claims in the Hous of Parliamnet. SIR Gerald Kaufman, the veteran Labour MP, yesterday compared the actions of Israeli troops in Gaza to the Nazis who forced his family to flee Poland. During a Commons debate on the fighting in Gaza, he urged the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel. Sir Gerald, who was brought up as an orthodox Jew and Zionist, said: “My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town a German soldier shot her dead in her bed…

Another funeral bombed
In Gaza
Israeli warplanes just bombed a funeral ceremony in a school in Eastern Sheyjayee, east of Gaza city. Minutes ago, as the mourners of another recently killed by Israel tried in vain to grieve their dead. At least ten more are now dead. Everything is in vain here: breathing (inhale chemical fumes), running and seeking sanctuary (no sanctuary possible), condemning Israel’s war crimes (which even the carefully diplomatic, very articulate, John Ging has done, in effect, condemning the bombing first of the UN school and then the chemical bombing –white phosphorus, Ging said– of the UN headquarters, with its supply of food for the refugees of Gaza), hoping, grieving, being admitted to hospitals (Wafa hospital was attacked, evacuated and attacked; al Quds hospital was repeatedly bombed yesterday, burning late into the night, necessitating the transfer –under danger from the Israeli tanks lurking and snipers targeting), and –of course–staying home and hoping the missiles will not strike…

Hamas rejects Israel ceasefire demands
Reuters
Hamas today said it would not accept Israeli conditions for a ceasefire and would continue to fight until Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip ends. Khaled Meshaal, leader of the Palestinian Islamist group, called on leaders at the opening of an emergency meeting on Gaza in Doha to cut all ties with the Jewish state. “Despite all the destruction in Gaza, I assure you: we will not accept Israel’s conditions for a ceasefire,” Meshaal told the meeting in Doha, which was attended by the presidents of Syria, Iran and Lebanon. Heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Egypt were absent…

Palestinian paramedics: targets in flashing red
PNN
Palestinian paramedics are targeted by Israeli forces in direct contravention to international law, yet still continue the struggle to save lives. Khalid Yousef Abu Sa’ada lives in Jabaliya Refugee Camp to the northeast of Gaza City. He told the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights late this week, “We are working twenty four hours a day.” He continued, “We only sleep when there is no Israeli shelling. The rest of the time it is our duty to stay at our work. I have not been to my home for days now, and I can’t believe the situation we are facing. Ninety percent of the injured victims we try to rescue have already lost legs or arms, or both.”…

After attacks on Tal Al Hawa yesterday, 23 people found in the rubble
PNN
When Israeli forces moved on from yesterday’s major attack on southern Gaza City’s Tal Al Hawa neighborhood that targeted homes, buildings, the UNRWA and Al Aqsa Hospital, relief crews were able to come in. Palestinian medical sources reported this morning that several bodies were found in the rubble. While headlines focus on the possibilities of a ceasefire, attacks continue. Israeli forces targeted a car in central Gaza City, killing two people this afternoon. Recovered from under the wreckage of yesterday were 23 more corpses. At least 30 people were killed in the Tel Al Hawa neighborhood yesterday. The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip since 27 December is 1,135 as of 6:30 pm Friday…
