Report direct from Gaza
Day 23 of Israeli War On Gaza
Informative Report on Gaza War: Death toll 1310, wounded 5600
Sameh A. Habeeb: A Photojournalist, Humanitarian & Peace Activist in Gaza Strip.
Thousands of people appeared on the Gaza streets. Everybody is trying to explore what has happened to his relatives, houses and areas. I have documented a massive devastation throughout east, north and west of Gaza Strip. The devastating storms everything needed for normal life. Houses, schools, hospitals, clinics, police stations, charities, universities and streets totally and partially destroyed. More than 100 dead corps were found today by paramedics mostly civilians and a family of 8 members. Samouni family which was massacred before found 17 more dead bodies under the rubbles. Many families still seek rest of members and relatives who were lost during the war time…

The Necessary Violence of the Murderous National Bully
Arthur Silber
…For the argument here, the crucial aspect of these very similar national narratives and histories is this: the founding and development of both America and Israel required the large-scale, even genocidal, destruction of indigenous peoples. To further that destruction, and to provide moral “justification,” the indigenous peoples first had to be condemned and demonized. And because force and violence are necessary to the continuation of the State, such demonization must continue into the future, especially since additional acts of destruction will be necessary for the maintenance and consolidation of State power…

Israeli ‘ceasefire’ includes increased US involvement in Israeli occupation
Saed Bannoura
Just before Saturday’s decision by Israeli officials to declare a ‘ceasefire’ in Gaza, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni received a signed assurance from US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that the US government would provide security and intelligence personnel to assist the Israeli military in its ongoing military occupation of all Palestinian land. Previously, the US role in the conflict had been limited to material support, including weapons shipments and billions of dollars in financial commitment to Israel each year. Now, the US has committed in writing to the Israeli Foreign Minister (although no Congressional debate or resolution took place), to provide “resources, wherewithal and technology necessary in order to fulfill our part of the bargain”, according to Condoleezza Rice…

Taliban claims they’ve formed shadow government
CTV.ca News Staff
The Taliban are claiming they control 70 per cent of rural Afghanistan and have instituted a shadow government with their own police, courts and rule of law… Tooryalai Wesa, the Canadian-Afghan governor of Kandahar, called the Taliban’s assertions “rumours.” But many villagers in the region told CTV’s Steve Chao a different story — saying they put their trust in the Taliban…

IOF Unilaterally Ceases Fire; Redeploys inside Gaza – Dozens of Decomposed Bodies Found under Houses Rubble and Enormous Destruction in Neighborhoods
Al Mezan Center
Israel has announced to unilaterally cease fire in the Gaza Strip while leaving its troops in positions they had seized during the so-called Operation Cast Lead. Al Mezan Center’s staff visited some of the areas the IOF left last night and today morning. It found out that a disaster had struck these areas, which had not been accessible for weeks. The findings provide evidence about the likelihood that the IOF had perpetrated war crimes in these areas. In particular, dozens of civilians’ corpses have been found in a bad condition under the rubble of destroyed houses. Moreover, the scene of destruction of neighborhoods suggests that wide-scaled home demolitions were systematically conducted by the IOF. Al Mezan Center’s field workers reported that entire urban blocks have disappeared in the areas of Ezbet Abed-Rabu, As-Salatin, Al-Atatra, Al-Israa’ in North Gaza District, and Al-Kashif and Al-Rayis Hills and the eastern suburbs of Gaza City…

Israelis Applaud Massacre of Palestinians
Press Action
Israel’s massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip represents a terrible atrocity committed by a terrorist, outlaw state. And yet the intensity of Israel’s killing machine is probably not the most disturbing part of its three-week-long onslaught. Shamefully, we’ve grown accustomed to Israel committing one atrocity after another against Palestinians while other nation-states sit on their hands—or in the case of the U.S. Congress, pass almost unanimous resolutions endorsing the slaughter—and let the rogue state get away with its terrible crimes. Perhaps more appalling is how the Israeli public is cheering on the massacre. The Associated Press reported Jan. 17 that a Haaretz-Dialog poll found that 82% of Israelis believe their military has not “gone too far” with its attacks against Palestinians in Gaza. Regarding U.S. public opinion, the Jerusalem Post reports that two new polls show Americans strongly back Israel over Palestinians in Israel’s assault on Gaza…

Operation Unpunished Lead
Eduardo GALEANO , Translated by Supriyo Chatterjee
To justify itself, state terrorism manufactures terrorists: it sows hate and harvests alibis. Everything indicates that this slaughterhouse of Gaza, which according to its perpetrators is for finishing off the terrorists, will achieve boosting them. Since 1948, the Palestinians live condemned to perpetual humiliation. They cannot even breathe without permission. They have lost their country, their land, their water, their freedom, everything of theirs. They do not even have the right to choose their governments. When they vote for those they should not, they are punished. Gaza is being punished. It turned into a mousetrap without exit since Hamas cleanly won the elections of 2006. Something similar happened in 1932 when the Communist Party triumphed in the elections of El Salvador. Drenched in blood, the Salvadorans atoned for their bad behaviour and since then have lived under military dictatorships. Democracy is a luxury which not everyone deserves…

A MOU to kill more Palestinians
Dr. Akram Habeeb*, Writing from the Occupied Gaza Strip
…The most disturbing statement about the situation in Gaza was made by Dr. Rice was when she declared that it was the Palestinian side who violated the truce and subsequently is responsible for what is happening in Gaza. Such a statement is easy to be made by Ms. Condi whose accomplishments in America’s foreign policy were spectacular! She promised that by 2008 the presidents vision of two states would be concretized. It seems though that she succeeded in having two Palestinian cantons, one in Gaza, and the other in the West Bank ! So we can easily say that Ms. Rice succeeded in fulfilling her President’s vicious vision of having two viable Palestinian states… The most recent MOU signed by Dr. Condi and Ms. Livne, one of the most notorious Israeli war criminals, stipulates that the American government helps in preventing weapons smuggling into Gaza. According to Ms. Condi, the signing of this MOU is only a step in the process towards a permanent seize fire. Of course she speaks about a process which gives the Israeli more time for human cleansing in Gaza; she wants to give the Israeli army more time to kill more Palestinian children and women. However, unfortunately this MOU does not stipulate that the American government stops sending weapons of mass destruction to Israel…

Jan 18: at the Samouni house
tales to tell – from Gaza 2008
…This morning the Al Quds Red Crescent headed out to Zaytoun, to the area we had a few approved evacuations and far more refused ones. Local people had begun excavating the rubble of the Sammouni house. You remember we heard some of their story before. I helped correct the English of some of the testimonies from the survivors that the Red Crescent was collecting. One of the more vivid images was one of the trapped and injured children describing the only food being tomatoes covered in the blood of his family, and having to sleep on their corpses amidst the rubble for 3 days. My nurse friend R at the hospital said treating one of the children that they got out to Al Quds was the first time she couldn’t help but cry. He was begging her for food and water which she had to deny him until his injuries were assessed…

TROUBLE AHEAD
Malcom Lagauche
…A few months ago, I wrote a column called “Re-Conquering Africa,” in which I mentioned that Africa is ripe for a program to strip it of oil and uranium. Obama is the perfect front-man for such an undertaking. If a white U.S. president would implement it, there would be some outcry from the left that it was a racist move. Enter Obama. He will not be criticized about racism because he is black. Now, he will have Rice, a black woman. right beside him…

The Pastor of Gaza: The bitter siege is a war crime
Father Manuel Mussallam, Al-Moharer
…What you see on television and what you hear is not all of the harsh reality experienced by our people in Gaza. The television and radio cannot transmit the whole truth because of its immensity in our land. The bitter siege on Gaza has become a hurricane that is growing every hour until it has become a war crime, a crime against humanity. If the people of Gaza are now presenting their tragedy to the court of conscience of every human, who has “goodwill”, the time to come is the time of God’s just court…

Haniyeh: Hamas won Gaza war, but was wise to declare truce
Avi Issacharoff, Haaretz Correspondent and Agencies
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh said on Sunday that Israel’s three-week offensive in the Gaza Strip was a failure and had not cowed the Palestinians, but praised his movement for deciding to declare a cease-fire. “The enemy has failed to achieve its goals,” Ismail Haniyeh, the top Hamas leader in the territory, said in a speech broadcast on Hamas television. Though he called the war, in which more than 1,300 Gazans and 13 Israelis died, a “popular victory” for Palestinians, Haniyeh said Hamas’s decision to declare a truce on Sunday was “wise and responsible”…

Children found with bullets lodged in their head
Topaz Amoore
Doctors operating the only brain-scanning machine at an Egyptian hospital near Gaza have been almost overwhelmed by the number of Palestinian children arriving with bullet wounds to the head. On just one day last week, staff at the Al Arish hospital in Sinai were called to perform CAT scans on a nine year old, two 10 year olds and a 14 year old, each of whom had a bullet lodged in their brain after coming under fire during the Israeli ground assault on Gaza…

Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza Strip
AFP
Israel began withdrawing troops from the Gaza Strip on Sunday as a fragile unilateral ceasefire came into effect after its deadliest offensive ever launched on the battered Palestinian territory. As medics scrambled to pull dozens of bodies from the mountains of rubble left by Israel’s three-week offensive, Palestinian militants said they would hold their fire for one week to allow Israeli troops to withdraw. Egypt, meanwhile, hosted an international summit of European and Arab leaders aimed at shoring up the truce, while officials in Cairo held talks with the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas with the same goal…

“We Were Expecting Death Any Minute”
By Ibrahim Arafa, IOL Staff
No matter how much time passes, Khaled will never forget the days of horror his family suffered during the Israeli offensive on his small town in the Gaza Strip. “We were expecting death at any minute,” Khaled, a resident of the south eastern town of Khuza’a in Khan Yunis, told IslamOnline.net over the phone. He said the Israeli military offensive has left their town literally in ruins. Israeli aircraft and artillery shells hit almost every house in the town, spreading death and destruction everywhere…

UN: 200,000 Gazans displaced by violence
Morning Star Online, UK
THE UN and human rights organisations revealed on Sunday that 200,000 Palestinians have been driven from their homes by the war in Gaza. The Gaza-based Mezan Centre for Human Rights estimates that 150,000 Palestinians have fled to homes of relatives and friends while the UN said that more than 45,000 Gazans are crowded into 49 UN schools that have been converted into shelters. Israel’s 18-month siege of Gaza has trapped the 1.5 million impoverished inhabitants in a virtual prison camp, just 25 miles long and seven miles wide. Only those with foreign passports were permitted to leave during the 22-day assault…
