The DEA as a coordinator of drug trafficking in Latin America
03.11.2012 | 12:00 | Nil NIKANDROV
Inspector Franklin Brewster Chase, aged 39, the head of investigation of particularly important cases of drug trafficking in Panama, was poisoned on July 3, 2006. Brewster, like many other members of staff, kept food brought from home in the fridge, which stood in one of the staff rooms. After having lunch and drinking water from a plastic bottle, he fell ill, began to complain of shortness of breath, fever, dizziness, and nausea. Half an hour later, still conscious, he asked to be taken to the National Hospital. Two weeks later he died in excruciating pain. Panamanian investigators told the press that, in all probability, Brewster had been poisoned by organophosphate pesticides…
«The Liberation of Mali», or the concept of military intervention
02.11.2012 | 00:00 | Alexander MEZYAEV
The situation in Mali is becoming ever more dramatic. The regime that has established itself in the north of the country (considering the configuration of the borders of the country, «north» is around two thirds of its territory) has taken an extremely brutal form. Today this is a place of savage violence… They have their reasons for capturing the north of Mali. Here, near Kigali, there happens to be the largest airport in the whole of West Africa, (built by the way, with the help of Soviet specialists) which can take the heaviest airplanes. Such planes are trafficking drugs from Latin America for distribution through Guinea Bissau and other African coastal states…
UAVs: Human and Legal Aspects
02.11.2012 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV
Right before the presidential candidates debates on October 11, 2012, President Obama had authorized his 297th unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strike since taking office. 17 Pakistanis lost lives as a result. The Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the strike was a clear violation of international law and sovereignty of a country that is not in the state of war. Less than a week later, on October 19, 2012 the CIA announced it would ask the White House to approve a significant expansion of UAVs fleet to step up lethal campaigns in non-belligerent states. The ramping up of drone strikes has been one of the more controversial elements of the Obama administration’s foreign policy…
The last round, or will Obama`s position on Russia save him?
01.11.2012 | 00:00 | Dmitry MININ
One of Obama`s main directions of attack on Romney was on the «Russian Front». Barely concealing a sarcastic grin, the President said to his opponent: «Governor, I’m glad that you recognize «Al-Qaeda» as a threat, because a few months ago you thought that the greatest geopolitical threat to America was Russia … but you probably know that the cold the war ended more than two decades ago»… However, there should also be no delusion, as during the years of the Obama administration, Russia became the main testing ground of modern American technology of «soft» or «smart» power on «not quite friendly territories»…
EU Autumn Marathon
31.10.2012 | 00:00 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV
…The reasons for the growing solidarity in the Washington – Brussels – London triangle, seems to be associated with a growing schism within the EU of the Anglo-Saxon and Franco-German camps. Primarily the catalyst for the split is a dispute about the way out of the financial and economic crisis. Speaking in geopolitical terms, it is a struggle in the concept of the “strong” and “weak” in Europe…
Syria the Bleeding and Spreading Wound
31.10.2012 | 00:00 | Najmuddin A. SHAIKH
…All report emerging from Syria suggest that the ceasefire has been breached more than it has been observed. One report even suggests that the casualties on the day of the Eid festival amounted to about 150, which is the generally accepted average of daily casualties that Syria has seen over the last few months of intensified fighting between the Assad forces and various elements of the opposition…
Why «Conspiracy» is a Pejorative Term to Some Elites
30.10.2012 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN
The word «conspiracy» and «conspiracy theory» is tossed out by a group of individuals who fear their own global conspiracy will be exposed if the onion layers involving global conspiracies begin to be peeled back. The most insidious conspiracy in the world today is one that has burrowed deeply into hallowed institutions of government, media, the military, and religion to provide its nefarious practices a cover of legitimacy. The global conspiracy is one that lacks any sort of human decency: the practice and official protection of pedophilia…
Violence and Torture in the U.S.
30.10.2012 | 00:00 | Alexander MEZYAEV
During the last few days, events have unfolded in connection with the establishment of new evidence of unlawful activities against the so-called «opposition» in Russia… So, last week, the U.S. government accused Russia of violating the UN Convention against Torture based… The Head of Department at the Rule of Law and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that so far «no American soldier or intelligence officer guilty of systematic torture of both American and foreign nationals in Iraq, Afghanistan and special CIA prisons, or in the special prison at Guantanamo Bay, have been punished. However, the representative of the Russian diplomatic service was too diplomatic and limited in not taking the U.S. claim too seriously. And in this he was wrong! After all, the situation inside the U.S. in respect of torture is no better!..
Mali: In For Military Intervention
29.10.2012 | 00:00 | Andrei AKULOV
On October 24 top-level American and French military leaders and diplomats, including US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson and U.S. Army Major General Charles Hooper of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) wrapped up two days of talks in Paris on intelligence gathering and security. Visiting the French General Staff plans and operations center was part of the event. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and UN officials joined the meeting too. They were extremely restrained in public comments on their activities. This time Paris welcomed those who came to discuss an issue of extreme and urgent importance – the situation in the Sahel region of Africa…
Thus, Is The USA To Stay In Afghanistan Forever?
29.10.2012 | 00:00 | Aleksandr SHUSTOV
The allegations the US is not leaving Afghanistan after 2014 have been going around for quite a long time. They were confirmed once more in mid-October. Taking into consideration the country ‘s extremely important geopolitical location, it looks like it won’t be just a token presence… ?he reluctance on the part of Islamabad to allow the transition of US forces and equipment across the Pakistani territory leaves only the states of Central Asia as a transition route for the United States supplies…
American democracy: what lies behind the facade?
28.10.2012 | 00:00 | Igor IGNATCHENKO
…Americans only need to wait for the declaration of martial law on the pretext of another terrorist attack or natural disaster, as the legislative framework of the authoritarian state in the U.S. is fully prepared. The establishment of martial law would be by the Federal Agency of the United States for Emergency Management (FEMA), whose program to respond to emergencies has long been in place and is known as the Readiness Exercise 1984 (REX-84). We can also mention «Operation Garden Plot» – a program of the U.S. Army and the National Guard under the control of U.S. Northern Command (Northcom), to assist the security forces during internal strife…
