What is Abbas cooking up with Jordan?
Abdul Bari Atwan, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 4/3/2013
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas surprised us by flying to Amman and signing an agreement that stipulates that Jordan’s King Abdullah is the protector of the holy sites in Jerusalem and has the right to take all necessary legal measures to preserve them, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque. It was a surprise because this was an agreement made behind closed doors. There was no announcement beforehand, nor was it discussed in what passes for parliaments in the two countries.
In fact, the only thing that Abbas said was that the agreement is a commitment to what is already held to be true. If so, then why was the “historic agreement” only signed now, after Netanyahu’s secret visit to Amman and a public visit from US President Barack Obama?
This agreement surely was not made on the spur of the moment; it is almost certain that there were legal and political committees working hard on preparing the text over the past few weeks, or even months, in full secrecy. However, why the secrecy? Why not be transparent and honest with the Palestinian and Jordanian people, especially over such a serious matter?
I’m not protesting against the Hashemite Kingdom’s defence of the holy sites, or against the Jordanian monarch’s right to take legal measures to protect them. What is at issue here is the fact that President Abbas, whose term of office expired more than 3 years ago, has taken it upon himself to sign an agreement on behalf of the Palestinians without any consultation of discussions with any legal Palestinian organisations or those struggling to regain the homeland, such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular and Democratic Fronts for the Liberation of Palestine.
If Abbas is capable of making such a move, then he is equally as capable of surprising us all again by signing agreements with Israel in which he makes serious concessions over Palestinian rights…. more.. e-mail

Why are so many Israelis rushing to leave the ‘promised land’?
Dr Saleh al-Na’ami, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 4/3/2013
The average annual income for an Israeli citizen is $19,000, which is 17 times greater than that of Palestinian in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Israel is one of the few states which have survived the current global financial crisis relatively unscathed and the security situation has improved considerably over the past few years.
Despite such positive aspects of life in the “Jewish state”, Israelis are rushing to get foreign passports and emigrate to a new life in the West.
A recent study showed that a million Israelis left the country over the past two decades. Whereas in the past, emigrants tended to move away quietly, there is now little shame in abandoning the Zionist project. Indeed, they even have seminars and conferences to discuss emigration. The results of a survey of emigrants suggests that the main question for them is not, “Why have we left Israel?” but “Why did we wait so long before leaving?”
A separate survey of young people showed that around half of settler youth would prefer to live somewhere else. Israel, they believe, is not the ideal place in which to set up home.
Interestingly, the overwhelming majority of Israeli emigrants head to Germany. Successive Israeli government have exploited Nazi Germany’s Holocaust against the Jews of Europe to justify usurping the land of Palestine. They have also extracted billions of dollars of “reparations” from the German government.
Not only have one million Israelis left in the past 20 years, but there is also a rush among those left behind to get a foreign passport. Sixty per cent of Israelis, it is claimed, have made contact with foreign embassies to apply for passports. more.. e-mail

PHOTOS: Palestinians return to village destroyed in 1948 Nakba
Photos by Ryan Rodrick Beiler / Activestills.org, +972 Magazine 4/1/2013
Palestinian citizens of Israel return to the village of Al-Ruways, which was destroyed by Zionist military forces during the Nakba.
The Israeli group Zochrot organizes many tours of Palestinian villages depopulated during the Nakba of 1948. What made this Saturday’s tour of Al-Ruways particularly remarkable was the large number of displaced Palestinians and their descendants who made the event more of a return than a simple tour.
Zochrot, whose name means “remembering” in Hebrew, aims to educate Israeli Jews about the history of the Nakba and the Right of Return for Palestinian refugees. Typically, they will arrange for one or two refugees to help guide a tour of their home village, telling those who attend about life in their village before the Nakba, and the events leading to their displacement in 1948.
This week in Al-Ruways, dozens of local Palestinian residents of Israel were on hand for the return to Al-Ruways. Led by village elders who lived through the Nakba and experienced the displacement firsthand, the large group walked through the land of the village, marking various sites with signs to remind future visitors of the town’s existence. Such a large turnout of Palestinians was possible because when this village was forcibly evacuated by Zionist forces, they were simply pushed to the nearest town, Tamra, which remains until today. The residents of Al-Ruways were told by the Jewish militia leaders that after two weeks, that they would be able to return to their homes. Of course, as in many similar cases throughout what became the State of Israel, the displaced Palestinians were never allowed to return to their homes, even though they continued to live just a few kilometers away. The village itself was completely destroyed, with few visible traces remaining other than the cemetery and occasional pieces of rubble. more.. e-mail

Chris Hedges resigns from human rights organization PEN
Israeli Occupation Archive 4/2/2013
“The suffering of the Palestinians under Israeli occupation and the plight of those caught up in our imperial wars in countries such as Iraq are not abstractions to me.”
The Truthdig columnist was scheduled to speak at events sponsored by PEN American Center next month, but he has resigned his membership in the writers’ organization over its executive director, Suzanne Nossel, a former aide to Hillary Clinton who may have coined the term “soft power.”
The following is from a 2004 Foreign Affairs article by Nossel titled “Smart Power: Reclaiming Liberal Internationalism”:
“To advance from a nuanced dissent to a compelling vision, progressive policymakers should turn to the great mainstay of twentieth-century U.S. foreign policy: liberal internationalism, which posits that a global system of stable liberal democracies would be less prone to war. Washington, the theory goes, should thus offer assertive leadership—diplomatic, economic, and not least, military—to advance a broad array of goals: self-determination, human rights, free trade, the rule of law, economic development, and the quarantine and elimination of dictators and weapons of mass destruction (WMD)”
In addition to working for the State Department under Hillary Clinton as deputy assistant secretary of state for international organization affairs, Nossel has worked as executive director of Amnesty International USA, and for Human Rights Watch and The Wall Street Journal.
Chris Hedges emailed the following statement to PEN and it is reprinted here with his permission…. — See also: Source: Truthdig more.. e-mail

Turkey’s Unsustainable Politics in the Middle East: Israel vs. The Rest
Palestine Chronicle: 3 Apr 2013 – By Ramzy Baroud ‘Confused’ may be an appropriate term to describe Turkey’s current foreign policy in the Middle East and Israel in particular. The source of that confusion – aside from the appalling violence in Syria and earlier in Libya – is Turkey’s own mistakes. The Turkish government’s inconsistency regarding Israel highlights earlier discrepancy in other political contexts. There was a time when Turkey’s top foreign policy priority included reaching out diplomatically to Arab and Muslim countries. Then, we spoke of a paradigm shift, whereby Istanbul was repositioning its political center, reflecting perhaps economic necessity, but also cultural shifts within its own society. It seemed that the East vs. West debate was skillfully being resolved by politicians of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, along with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, appeared to have obtained a magical non-confrontational approach to Turkey’s historic political alignment. ‘The…more
