Three Palestinians killed as jewellers search for bargains
Seán Clinton, Op-Ed News 8/31/2013
On Monday 26th August, shortly after three Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces in the Qalandia Refugee Camp, leaders of the global gem and jewellery industry gathered a short distance away in Ramat Gan for the start of a week-long International Diamond Fair in the Israeli Diamond Exchange.
The purpose of their visit was essentially to profit from the trade in diamonds from Israel, diamonds that are a major source of funding for a regime which stands accused of war crimes, the crime of apartheid and an illegal and brutal occupation.
Cocooned within the comfort and security of the Israeli Diamond Exchange, diamond buyers from the US, China, Russia, India, Italy – over twenty countries in all – were oblivious to the carnage that unfolded in Qalandia, thirty minutes away by road but light years away from the vulgar opulence of an industry that continues to facilitate the trade in blood diamonds. Yes, make no mistake; diamonds exported from Israel are blood diamonds.
If revenue from rough diamonds in the possession of African rebels or cut and polished diamonds from dealers in Ramat Gan funds gross human rights violations the diamonds that generate that revenue are blood diamonds. The Israeli diamond industry generates about $1 billion annually for the Israeli military/security industries – a military which stands accused of war crimes. The jewellery/diamond industry wants people to believe that only rough diamonds used by rebels can be blood diamonds. This allows the lucrative trade in cut and polished blood diamonds to continue unseen, unchecked, and concealed from media and public scrutiny.
Most people are unaware of the bureaucratic subterfuge that permeates the international diamond industry, the result of which allows cut and polished blood diamonds to evade regulations that were ostensibly set up to ban all blood diamonds. — See also: Witness accounts on the killing of three Palestinians that stopped peace negotiations more.. e-mail

Peace or propaganda?
Sam Bahour, Al-Ahram Weekly 8/28/2013
A recent leak from US efforts to restart the Palestinian-Israeli peace process has made public some shocking revelations.
The first proclaimed leak from US Secretary of State John Kerry’s efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as it is so often called, were published last week in the reputable London-based daily Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat.
The source is said to be from a posting from the website of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, which claims the information was leaked to it by someone attending the tightly closed negotiating sessions. The validity of this claim and the contents of the leak are unverifiable, and the infighting between Hamas and Fatah give both a vested interest to publicly damage the other. However, a read through of the supposedly leaked information is enough to make anyone familiar with this issue worried.
The Al-Hayat article on the leak states that Kerry obtained Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s approval on the general parameters for the restart of negotiations at meetings between the two in Amman on 17-18 July, 2013, prior to Kerry’s announcement that negotiations would restart.
According to the leaked document, “Kerry set a maximum period of time ranging from six to nine months that would be dedicated to bilateral Palestinian-Israeli negotiations… without any preconditions,” beyond the 11 principles listed below and whereby Jordan participates in meetings on refugees, Jerusalem and borders where necessary.
These principles are: “the Separation Wall will serve as the security borders of the ‘Jewish’ state, and the temporary border of the ‘Palestinian’ state… Both parties will acknowledge and announce this…” more.. e-mail

Jerusalem’s Silwan kids without classrooms
Lea Frehse, Alternative Information Center 8/30/2013
80 children in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Silwan were sent home on the first day of school this week: not enough classrooms.
The new school year began in Jerusalem this week, like many places throughout the world. When the pupils of East Jerusalem’s Silwan Primary School arrived to class on the first day of school, however, the school’s 80 sixth-graders were told to leave: The school doesn’t have enough classrooms for all. 40 of the sixth graders were referred to a school in the adjacent neighborhood of Ras al-Amud. For the remaining 40, though, the Israeli authorities have provided no alternatives thus far.
Students and parents are disappointed and angry. Representatives of Silwan’s Parents’ Committee have sought contact wit
h the Jerusalem Municipality, responsible for education in East Jerusalem, but talks have yielded no results. On Wednesday, pupils and parents assembled in protest at the school.

“We went to school on the first day, but the teachers told us there was no space this year for grade six so they sent us away,” says six-grader Mohanat Dana. His friend Mohammad Jaba’a explains: “They sent us to Ahmad Abbassi School in Ras al-Amud. We don’t want to go there: the Israeli soldiers come often to take kids from there.”
Mohammed Abdel Hameed Adeeb, father of one of the students turned away, is angered by the authorities’ neglect:: “Every year they turn some of our kids away. There are not enough classrooms and the Jerusalem municipality has done nothing to tackle the problem. more.. e-mail

Does Obama know he’s fighting on al-Qa’ida’s side?
Robert Fisk, The Independent 8/27/2013
All for one and one for all’ should be the battle cry if the West goes to war against Assad’s Syrian regime
If Barack Obama decides to attack the Syrian regime, he has ensured – for the very first time in history – that the United States will be on the same side as al-Qa’ida.
Quite an alliance! Was it not the Three Musketeers who shouted “All for one and one for all” each time they sought combat? This really should be the new battle cry if – or when – the statesmen of the Western world go to war against Bashar al-Assad.
The men who destroyed so many thousands on 9/11 will then be fighting alongside the very nation whose innocents they so cruelly murdered almost exactly 12 years ago. Quite an achievement for Obama, Cameron, Hollande and the rest of the miniature warlords.
This, of course, will not be trumpeted by the Pentagon or the White House – nor, I suppose, by al-Qa’ida – though they are both trying to destroy Bashar. So are the Nusra front, one of al-Qa’ida’s affiliates. But it does raise some interesting possibilities.
Maybe the Americans should ask al-Qa’ida for intelligence help – after all, this is the group with “boots on the ground”, something the Americans have no interest in doing. And maybe al-Qa’ida could offer some target information facilities to the country which usually claims that the supporters of al-Qa’ida, rather than the Syrians, are the most wanted men in the world.
There will be some ironies, of course. While the Americans drone al-Qa’ida to death in Yemen and Pakistan – along, of course, with the usual flock of civilians…. more.. e-mail

Ahmad, Palestinian Refugee from Syria: ‘I Feel We Are Double Refugees’
Palestine Chronicle: 31 Aug 2013 – By IRIN – Masna’a (Lebanon-Syria Border Crossing) Palestinian refugees fleeing the violence in Syria have been refused entry into Lebanon for three weeks now. Since 6 August, according to Human Rights Watch, the Lebanese government has turned back Palestinians who had originally sought refuge in Syria when they were forced from their homes in 1948 and 1967, and are now fleeing once more with their descendants, this time from the conflict in Syria. A source at the Lebanese General Security confirmed to IRIN the government is no longer letting Palestinians from Syria into Lebanon. Makram Malaeb, programme manager for the Syrian response at the Ministry of Social Affairs, said exceptions would be made for “humanitarian cases”. According to the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, more than 92,000 Palestinians from Syria have already sought refuge in Lebanon, joining the 455,000 Palestinian refugees hosted in Lebanon before the Syrian crisis, largely…more

Canadian Israeli Lobby’s ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop’
Palestine Chronicle: 31 Aug 2013 – By Eric Walberg Two recent events, while not of any great significance in themselves, reveal much about the state of Canadian foreign policy. *B’nai Brith Canada, Canada’s oldest Jewish service organization, founded in 1875, hosted Brigadier-General Eden Attias, Canada’s first Israeli defense attache (only the US and Canada have ‘Israeli defense attaches’), at the Asper Jewish Community Campus in Winnipeg on 28 August (free admission and refreshments). *The Canadian Jewish Defense League has invited Pamela Geller, founder of Stop Islamization of America, and Robert Spencer, founder of Jihad Watch, to speak at the Hilton Suites Hotel in Markham, on 17 September, despite lobbying by anti-racist groups to cancel the event. Before his diplomatic promotion, Attias was head of Israel’s Nevatin Air Force Base, with jurisdiction over Gaza. As such, he was intimately involved in both the invasion of Gaza in 2008 and the assault on the Turkish boat Mavi Marmara…more

Syria: U.S. War Making at the Expense of Democracy
Palestine Chronicle: 31 Aug 2013 – By Richard Falk The U.S. Government rains drone missiles on civilian human targets anywhere in the world, continues to operate Guantanamo in the face of universal condemnation, whitewashed Abu Ghraib, Bagram, and the torture memos, committed aggression against Iraq and Afghanistan, and invests billions to sustain its unlawful global surveillance capabilities. Still, it has the audacity to lecture the world about ‘norm enforcement’ in the wake of the chemical weapons attack in the Ghouta suburb of Damascus. Someone should remind President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry that credibility with respect to international law begins at home and ends at the United Nations. Sadly, the American government loses out at both ends of this normative spectrum, and the days of Washington being able to deliver pious messages on the importance of international law are over. No one is listening, and that’s a relief, although it does provide material…more

Obama: You Cannot Start a War by Yourself
Palestine Chronicle: 31 Aug 2013 – By Ralph Nader Dear President Obama: Before you decide to attack Syria, yet another Arab or Islamic country that does not threaten U.S. security, there are certain constitutional “niceties” that you should observe. Chronically violating the Constitution overturns the rule of law and can produce costly blowbacks. On August 28, you stated that bombing Syria “is not about war, it’s about accountability,” obviously referring to the brutal gassing of neighborhoods outside of Damascus. What about your accountability to receive authorization from Congress which, under Article 1, Section 8, has the sole and exclusive power to declare war? Spare Americans the casuistry of your lawyers who “legalized” your war on Libya, with no declaration, authorization or appropriation of funds from Congress, and pushed the envelope of the “unitary presidency” beyond the unlawful and brazen extremes advocated by George W. Bush and his lawyers. Nearly 200 members of both parties of Congress…more
