Unconditional release of Marwan Barghouti is positive step forward
Ahmed Kathrada, Al Jazeera 10/31/2013
A former political prisoner recounts his fight against apartheid and calls on Israel to free all political prisoners.
Marwan Barghouti, a leading Palestinian political prisoner being held for life in Israel, has spent nearly two decades of his life in Israeli jails, including the past 11 years. Approximately 30 others, who later this month are expected to exchange prison cells for larger prisons in occupied Palestine, are returning to a very different world – grown children, an even more dire political landscape, and a West that denigrates them while ignoring the crimes of their jailers.
Only a political prisoner can fully comprehend the ordeal of a fellow political prisoner. The experiences of solitary confinement, ill-treatment, separation from the outside world, and the progressive erosion of the concept of time, cannot be fully translated into words. Imprisonment leaves behind deep scars, both in your flesh and in your soul.
Legitimate struggle
Together with leaders such as Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela, I spent more than a quarter of a century in the dungeons of apartheid in defence of an ideal that eventually triumphed: freedom and a non-racial and non-sexist, democratic South Africa. Like Israel today, the apartheid government framed our case as a “security threat”, while it was evident that we were political prisoners fighting a legitimate struggle for national liberation against an oppressive and racist regime.
When people today think of South Africa they instantly recall the image of the smiling Mandela walking out of prison, to be welcomed by cheering crowds. Little do they remember the personal sacrifices that he and his fellow prisoners made over the years in apartheid prisons before reaching that moment.
I think of my cramped prison cell and I visualise my fellow freedom fighter Marwan Barghouti and other Palestinian prisoners…. more.. e-mail

The key to a just peace
James Zogby, Al-Ahram Weekly 10/30/2013
Without bringing front and centre, as recognised equals, Palestinian victims of Israeli aggression, not only will the peace process be a charade, it will ultimately fail.
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators are meeting in the latest chapter of the decades-long saga of on-again, off-again peace talks. With no leaks, and even less optimism, there is no shortage of speculation as to how the talks are going or whether any agreement is even possible.
Here in the US, supporters of the Palestinians are engaged in a sometimes heated but rather pointless debate as to what the “deal” should include or whether no deal is the best outcome – since that, it is projected, might lead inevitably to a one-state solution. This entire discussion is not only unedifying, it is a waste of energy and a cop-out.
This is not to say that the outcome doesn’t matter. Rather it is an acknowledgment of the fact that the ultimate resolution of the conflict won’t be impacted by our debates. Instead of exhausting ourselves arguing about what we can’t control, we should be focused on what we can do to shine a light on the daily injustices visited upon Palestinians and mobilising support for those whose human rights are being abused. It is here that an impact can be made.
There are human rights groups in Israel and Palestine that are engaged in this effort. They are documenting: cases of land confiscation and home demolitions; prisoners held without charge or trial; instances where vigilante gangs of settlers have desecrated mosques, cut down olive trees, beaten or killed Palestinian youngsters; and where the military has used collective punishment, excessive force, or acted to humiliate Palestinian civilians.
The victims of these illegal and immoral behaviours deserve our attention. Their cases should be adopted, their names need to be known, and they should be supported until the injustice ends. more.. e-mail

A Masterpiece for Palestine
Gilad Atzmon, 11/1/2013
Gerald Clark’s “Nakba”
The other day I learned that Gerald Clark, pretty much an unfamiliar name to me, was about to launch a Jazz suite dedicated to the Nakba and the Palestinian people. I was intrigued, I contacted Gerald and offered my help. A day later, the album found its way to my letterbox.
I am usually bored by ‘political music.’ Occasionally it lacks the necessary wit let alone a musical edge. But Clark’s Nakba is a masterpiece – music in its purest and most genuine form. It’s probably best described as a ‘Blue Note for Palestine’. This new album is a treat, and you should seriously consider adding it to your Jazz collection.
A sampler medley of the album can be heard here [link follows].
I asked Clark about his musical background.
Are you a professional musician? What instrument do you compose on?
Gerald Clark: I am not a fulltime professional musician at this stage. I write all kinds of music: film scores, pop songs, etc. I’ve recorded an album as a singer-songwriter (The Great Divide), and six short film scores, but I have a feature film to score in the new year, which I’m already doing quite a lot of work for. I’ve written a symphonic suite and a string quartet, mostly to see if I could do it, and several jazz works. I’m a piano player predominately, and virtually all my composition starts sitting at the piano. more.. e-mail

90 Years From Now
Uri Avnery, CounterPunch 11/1/2013
What Kind of Israel?
On the occasion of my 90th birthday, a panel discussion of eminent historians took place in Tel Aviv’s Tsavta hall on the question: “Will Israel Exist in Another 90 Years?” There follows a slightly shortened version of my own remarks. A full video of the discussion with English translation will be published as soon as possible.
WILL ISRAEL exist in another 90 years? The very question is typical of Israel. No one would take it seriously in England or Germany, or even in other states born from immigration, like Australia or the USA.
Yet here, people speak of “existential dangers” all the time. A Palestinian state is an existential danger. The Iranian bomb is an existential danger. Why? They will have their bomb, we have our bomb, there will be a “balance of terror”. So what?
There is something in our national character that fosters self-doubt, uncertainty. The Holocaust? Perhaps an unconscious sense of guilt? A result of eternal war, or even the reason for it?
LET ME state right from the beginning: Yes, I believe Israel will exist in 90 years. The question is: what kind of Israel? Will it be a country your great-great-great-grandsons and daughters will be proud of? A state they will want to live in?
On the day the state was founded, I was 24 years old. My comrades and I, soldiers in our new army, didn’t think the event was very important. We were preparing ourselves for the battle that was to take place that night, and the speeches of politicians in Tel-Aviv did not really interest us. We knew that if we won the war there would be a state, and if not, there would be neither a state nor us. more.. e-mail

it’s not about “Israeli security”
In Gaza: 1 Nov 2013 – Gaza, under lock-down by the Zionist state since at least 2006 (and earlier, in stages) and the complicit Egyptian military state, is again being bombed. Remember, Palestinians have no: -tanks -warplanes -drones -warships -attack helicopters …and little running water, no exports, no freedom of movement, no air-raid sirens, no “iron dome”, no bomb shelters, very little electricity… The imbalance of power is clear, the mis-use of power is clear, the Zionist policy of a slow (and at times fast) genocide is clear. On the sea and in the border regions, the Zionist army continues to target Palestinians. Before the Nov 2012 attacks on Gaza, “ B’Tselem and other organizations documented dozens of cases in which the military shot persons who were more than 300 meters away from the fence – sometimes as far as a kilometer and a half away. According to OCHA, in reality, Palestinians were denied access to…more

‘It’s Your Father’ – Each Stretcher is a Tragedy
Palestine Chronicle: 1 Nov 2013 – By Tamar Fleishman – Qalandiya Each time it seems like we have reached the bottom of the pit, but reality proves there to be an even deeper one. Perhaps to those who do not stand in front of the ambulances, the stretchers and the back-to-back procedures the pictures seem the same. But they really aren’t. Each person is a story and on each stretcher is a tragedy. Only the occupation is the same, as well as the rifles, the regulations and the orders. And because of the regulations a six year old child who had severely injured his head at 10 AM with a metal bar had arrived at Qalandiya checkpoint at only 3 PM, although his father immediately after the injury phoned a brain specialist in Amman who told him that the child must be on the operation table within the hour. By the time the mechanism of the…more

Where Is the Ethical Leadership Over Syria?
Palestine Chronicle: 1 Nov 2013 – By Desmond Tutu Since the Syrian tragedy began three years ago, commentators have been quick to lambast one side or another for their lack of leadership, singling out Bashar al-Assad, or the rebels, or Russia, or the United States, or the Arab League, or the United Nations, or perhaps another entity. We are spoilt for choice. Meanwhile the war rages on and Syria’s families continue to be torn apart. What overwhelms me with sadness is not the failing of one side or another, but the way this war has engulfed the world in a vacuum where peaceful appeals are hardly audible. It was tragic to see Western politicians who spoke out against military intervention get slammed for somehow being cowardly. Although their effort would not stop the killing outright, to hold back the war designs of their own leaders wa
s a brave act. So where is the “ethical leadership” in…

Introduction to Practicalities of Return – Video
Palestine Chronicle: 1 Nov 2013 – By BADIL Resource Center The right of return for Palestinian refugees is a fundamental issue in the realization of Palestinian rights, yet it is always labeled as an unrealistic ‘obstacle’ by Israel and within the international community. As a ‘right’ in both legal and moral terms, the right of return is undeniable, but what actually is needed for its implementation? This short documentary introduces some of the questions around the issue and presents some ideas for possible solutions.more

Palestine Chronicle: 1 Nov 2013 – (Ahmed Kathrada is an anti-apartheid leader. He launched the Release Mandela Campaign and was imprisoned a year later, spending 26 years in apartheid jails.
