21 June 2018 — Institute of Race Relations Weekly digest – Against Racism, for Social Justice

This week the Guardian published The List of 34,361 known deaths at the EU’s borders since 1993, which includes three teenage Eritrean asylum seekers, who came from the migrant camp in Calais to the UK, who have committed suicide here in the past seven months.

Istanbul-based artist Banu Cennetog?lu, who posts updated versions of The List in public spaces such as billboards, transport networks and newspapers, has an exhibition starting on 28 June. Liz Fekete, Director of the Institute of Race Relations, and Mark Rice-Oxley, Head of Guardian’s special projects, will discuss the European migration crisis at Chisenhale gallery on 23 July.

Danny Reilly reviews a book on Liverpool’s migrant history, based on the work of the organisation Writing on the Wall, which connects Liverpool’s story in 1919 to the present day. We assess a report on the death of Lukasz Debowski, who was found hanged in his room at Morton Hall in 2017, the first of six people to die that year in immigration detention. We also have our regular calendar of racism and resistance. 

Finally, we are excited about our event this Saturday 23 June, ‘The heart is where the battle is’, where we will be celebrating the life and work of A. Sivanandan. Unfortunately the event is fully booked, but you can watch the live stream here and we will be posting a video of the event in a couple of weeks.
