CPNS: BANNED FROM LOOKING AT THE NEIGHBOURS

The Manifesto Club has been supporting Nigel and Sheila Jacklin, issued with a ridiculous order banning them from looking at their neighbours. (The actual text prohibits them from being ‘perceived to be looking’ at the neighbours).

The couple’s case has been covered on BBC 2 Victoria Derbyshire Programme, BBC News Online, Daily Mail, The Times, as well as a host of other papers. See coverage here.

Our involvement in several CPN cases has taught us that the appeals system is not fit for purpose. There is no legal aid, no legal advice, which means that people are ending up in the dock on their own facing council barristers. There urgently needs to be a decent system of defence: this will be the next phase of our campaign.

PSPOS CAMPAIGN NEWS – BUFFER ZONES, HOMELESS

Buffer zones: We worked with other civil liberties groups to oppose council PSPOs outside abortion clinics. We wrote a letter to the Times, and a letter to the seven councils currently considering buffer zones (reported in the Telegraph and Local Gov).

Imprisoning the homeless: We collaborated with the Guardian to expose the current crackdown on homeless people, including growing fines and even imprisonments. See the article in the Guardian, and others in The Week and the Metro. See our roundup of the latest incidents, including Poole’s ban on begging, and the Coventry man fined £100 for sleeping in public.

We are heartened and touched by the incredible response to our PSPOs and CPNs campaign appeal.

There have been lovely comments and donations from dog walkers, pedlars, lawyers, students, boaters, and councillors – all dead set for liberty and against PSPOs.

See the appeals page, to read the comments or contribute.
