Will Cameron Prevail Over Germany?

09.08.2014 | 00:02 | Arkady DZIUBA

On August 4 Prime Minister David Cameron visited the NATO Allied headquarters in Brussels. Formally the event was timed with the marking the 100 year anniversary of the British Empire’s entrance into the First World War, but Russia and the events in Ukraine were the issues to dominate the discussions.
A few days before visiting HQ in Mons he had sent a letter to other NATO leaders. It says that as the mission in Afghanistan is winding up the alliance should re-focus on deterring Russia as before. The military expenditure of each member should not be lower than 2% of GDP.

A Reckless and Irresponsible ‘Superpower’

08.08.2014 | 10:36 | Paul Craig ROBERTS

The consequence of Washington’s reckless and irresponsible political and military interventions in Iraq, Libya, and Syria has been to unleash evil. The various sects that lived in peace under the rule of Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, and Assad are butchering one another, and a new group, ISIS, is in the process of creating a new state out of parts of Iraq and Syria.
The turmoil brought into the Middle East by the Bush and Obama regimes has meant death and displacement for millions and untold future deaths. As I write 40,000 Iraqis are stranded on a mountain top without water awaiting death at the hands of ISIS, a creation of US meddling.

Modi Rewrites India’s Tryst with Destiny (II)

08.08.2014 | 01:03 | Melkulangara BHADRAKUMAR

The intellectual challenge today lies in reinterpreting the idea of non-alignment in tune with the spirit of our times, which is characterized by multipolarity in international politics, so as to meet India’s needs in the coming period as an emerging power.
That is also what Jawaharlal Nehru would have expected Prime Minister Modi to do as his worthy successor presiding over India’s tryst with destiny at a crucial juncture in world politics.
All things considered, therefore, India’s SCO membership would signify that the Modi government is charioting India toward a new world order where the country’s political and diplomatic options will multiply.

Obama’s Failing Wars. The Caribbean Front

08.08.2014 | 00:02 | Nil NIKANDROV

The Caribbean is America’s underbelly, and is extremely vulnerable in terms of the superpower’s security.
In order to limit the influence of Cuba and Venezuela on countries in the Caribbean, US intelligence agencies are widely resorting to cold war methods. Operations are constantly being carried out against the alliance Petrocaribe, which was set up in 2005 at the initiative of Hugo Chavez for the supply of oil and oil products to Central American and Caribbean countries at reduced rates.
The efforts of Caracas to consolidate the countries in the Caribbean are being perceived by Washington as “confrontational behaviour”.
Special departments of the US government are not cutting down on the intensity of operations to destabilise Cuba.
Attempts by the CIA and USAID to form ‘colour revolution’ groups on the island invariably continue to fail, and the latest such attempt recently gained publicity…

Modi Rewrites India’s Tryst with Destiny (I)

07.08.2014 | 00:01 | Melkulangara BHADRAKUMAR

On the face of it, China has so far been reluctant about India’s admission as a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization [SCO]. According to latest reports, however, this may be about to change. Beijing has had a profound rethink. Make no mistake, the tectonic plates of the geopolitics of a huge arc that comprises the Asia-Pacific, South and Central Asia and West Asia are dramatically shifting and that grating sound in the steppes will be heard far and wide – as far as North America.

Sanctions and Counteractions or Challenge and Response

07.08.2014 | 00:01 | Alexander DONETSKY

Russia has started to discuss the options as it gets ready to respond. It’ll be hard to normalize the situation till Europe realizes that the self-inflicted damage by far exceeds the iffy advantage of dancing to the Washington’s tune… The war in Donbass, unleashed by Kiev after the coup and supported by the United States and the European Union, is regularly used by the West to demonize Russia and make it subject to political, economic and informational pressure. The United States is the leading driving force in the process. It keeps on pushing the European allies to toughen the sanctions against Russian bureaucrats, journalists, as well as the country’s financial and industrial infrastructure.

Will Putin Realize That Russia Holds The Cards?

06.08.2014 | 10:19 | Paul Craig ROBERTS

More evidence, about which I hope to write at length, is piling up that Europe has acquiesced to Washington’s drive to war with Russia, a war that is likely to be the final war for humanity.  By Russia’s low key and unthreatening response to Washington’s aggression, thereby giving the West the mistaken signal that Russia is weak and fearful, the Russian government has encouraged Washington’s drive to war. Russia needs to save the world from war, but the avoidance of war requires Russia to make the costs clear to Europeans.

Ukraine is Being Used to Distract the World’s Attention from the Israeli Operation in Gaza

06.08.2014 | 00:12 | Pyotr ISKENDEROV

While the West uses the downing of the Malaysian airliner in the skies over Novorossiya to ratchet up pressure on Russia, a different war is raging in the Middle East.  However, the Israeli army’s latest incursion into the Gaza Strip has not prompted the usual clamorous international outcry.  This time all eyes are fixed on Ukraine and Russia.  Israel was counting on this media cover for its actions – these are the techniques that are commonly employed as part of information wars …

America’s Expanding Aggressive Signals Intelligence Operations

06.08.2014 | 00:09 | Wayne MADSEN

As recently witnessed by the “ferret” mission conducted by a U.S. Air Force RC-135 Rivet Joint spy plane near the Russian airspace of Kaliningrad, a mission designed to force the Russians to fire up radar and other electronic intelligence systems to gather profile data, the U.S. National Security Agency has adopted an aggressive stance. NSA’s recently-expanded operations against Russia and China come as President Obama’s Cold War-style rhetoric has become more aggressive toward both countries…

Transcarpathian Gambit

05.08.2014 | 00:01 | Alexander DONETSKY

The third wave of mobilization is launched in Ukraine to compensate for losses suffered in Donbass. It hits big bumps on the way. Nobody wants to be cannon fodder for the ruling regime to add to the death toll of thousands. People run away from different regions of the country, even the ones situated far from the conflict zone, to find refuge in Russia. Many of them are male citizens of the right age to be called for military service. The situation in the western part of Ukraine, especially the Transcarpathian region, has become explosive with people’s discontent getting ripe. The region has buried 70 countrymen losing their lives in the Donbass battles. The anger against the regime is growing…

Defining Away Economic Failure

04.08.2014 | 11:58 | Paul Craig ROBERTS

As I have emphasized for years, the West already lives in the dystopia forecast by George Orwell. Jobs are created by hypothetical add-ons to the reported payroll figures and by inappropriate use of seasonal adjustments.  Inflation is erased by substituting lower priced items in the inflation index for those that rise in price and by redefining rising prices as quality improvements. Real GDP growth is magicked into existence by deflating nominal GDP with the understated measure of inflation. Now corporations without factories are going to produce US manufacturing output, US exports, and US manufacturing jobs! Every sphere of Western existence is defined by propaganda.  Consequently, we have reached a perfect state of nihilism.  We can believe nothing that we are told by  government, corporations, and the presstitute media. We live in a lie, and the lie is ever expanding.

Nigeria on Fire

04.08.2014 | 00:00 | Alexander MEZYAEV

In July 2014 the activities of Boko Harum – a terrorist group operating in Nigeria – intensified activities on a broader scale. Skirmishes with the government troops turned into real battles. Terrorist acts became much more frequent and the fighting has gone beyond the state borders. The Boko Harum terrorist group appears to become an international organization… On July 27 Boko Haram militants attacked the northern Cameroon town of Kolofata and seized several people including the wife of Cameroon’s Vice Prime Minister Amadou Ali. The official was taken away from the place by his guards. The mayor and his family were taken hostage. The clashes with the Cameroon army lasted for a few days…

Argentina Declared in Default – Warning to Ukraine

03.08.2014 | 00:00 | Valentin KATASONOV

Actually Argentina has defaulted on its foreign debt. Such things happen in the contemporary world, the country has become a victim of financial vultures and the so-called legal imperialism of the United States… Argentina is the best illustration of how the legal imperialism works… On July 31 Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk made a loud-voiced statement. «The first major economic news today is that Argentina went into default», he told lawmakers. «And the second is that Ukraine didn’t default, and it never will». Perhaps he pins his hopes on the US sponsors. There is little ground to believe that Washington will grant billions (or even dozens of billions) to have the Ukraine’s debt restructured. Brussels will hardly lift a finger to help because the plight of the European Union is quite comparable with the debt problems faced by Ukraine…
