The Crisis of Ukrainian Statehood

08.11.2014 | 00:00 | Pavel DMITRIEV

…The elections in Ukraine on 26 October and the elections in the two Novorossiya republics on 2 November, as well as Russia’s recognition of these elections become another step towards the emergence of a new geopolitical reality in Eastern Europe… Following the victory in the armed struggle for de facto sovereignty, Novorossiya, by carrying out independent elections, has started to use this sovereignty in practice. The will of the people of Donetsk and Lugansk has been declared openly, and attempts to ignore it will be of no avail… Establishing the sovereignty of the republics of Novorossiya is, at one and the same time, putting an end to the existence of the Ukrainian state within the borders it has had since the collapse of the USSR in December 1991, when the Ukrainian Soviet Republic became an independent state…

The Republican Götterdämmerung

08.11.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN

The Republicans, who will soon control both houses of Congress, will seek to push the world to the brink of war. The neo-conservative war hawks who will soon take over Senate committees on foreign policy, defense, and intelligence will push for maximum confrontation with nations the neo-cons see as immortal enemies of America. In their eyes, a final showdown is nigh — a Götterdämmerung — arising from a certain rise in tensions between the United States and those who oppose its imperial policies. The world is about to become a very dangerous place…

On Rewriting the History of the Second World War and Reviving Reparation Claims

07.11.2014 | 00:00 | Valentin KATASONOV

The basic principles and terms of the reparation payments made by Germany and her allies were determined in 1945 at the Yalta and Potsdam conferences. For the USSR, the subject of German reparations was closed in 1953 when Moscow outright refused reparation deliveries from the German Democratic Republic and began paying for them at Comecon (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance) prices. Owing to the division of Germany and a number of other reasons, no general records were even set up for Germany’s fulfilment of its reparation obligations. Today, the German government does not have accurate information regarding its reparations and is using little more than certain expert estimates…

In the Heat of Battle against Islamic State

06.11.2014 | 09:49 | Boris DOLGOV

…According to some reports, the US plans to strike the Syrian oil infrastructure captured by Islamists to prevent illegal export bringing in up to $2 million daily. Any unbiased person can see that the strikes will be aimed at Syria’s economic potential. The US Middle East policy remains the same. The US intends to continue fighting the Islamic State but it refuses to join forces with Iran and Syria no matter they face the same enemy. The regime change in Damascus is still on the agenda of US administration which considers the Is-lamic State to be a force to be used for this purpose…

America’s Moribund Democracy a Harbinger of More War

06.11.2014 | 00:00 | Finian CUNNINGHAM

The US mid-term elections, which saw the Republican Party take control of the Senate and extending their hold over the House of Representatives, proves one thing: money can buy an election, but it can’t buy democracy. That indictment of eviscerated democracy in America, however, is a portent of more foreign aggression and wars. Congressional elections this week saw $4 billion being poured into media campaigns – a record high. But even with this largesse, the majority of American voters were underwhelmed by what was on offer. Some 60 per cent of voters did not even bother to cast their ballots. That is perhaps the real, shameful result of this election. Americans by their absence at polling stations are saying that there is nothing worthwhile voting for from among the two parties, whether Republican or Democrat…

Obama’s preventive coup in Burkina Faso

05.11.2014 | 11:04 | Wayne MADSEN

After a popular uprising forced Burkina Faso’s longtime dictator Blaise Compaoré from power after a 27-year long reign supported by the United States and France, President Barack Obama had to move fast. The White House wanted to ensure that loyalists of Compaoré’s assassinated predecessor, Marxist icon Thomas Sankara, a man his mother, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) / Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) maven Ann Dunham Soetoro, may have helped to topple in 1987, did not return to power in the landlocked West African nation…

Iran Nuclear Program Talks: Will it Ever Result in Final Agreement?

05.11.2014 | 00:00 | Nikolai BOBKIN

…The Obama administration believes that Iran should make peace with America and distance itself from Russia. Until now Tehran has not made anything to substantiate such hopes. Just remember the recent statements criticizing the United States and Great Britain made by Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei. He accused these states of being behind the emergence of the Islamic State and the general instability in the Middle East. According to him, Great Britain is a «satanic state» which together with the United States and Israel works to deepen divisions between Shia and Sunni Muslims…

The Internationalisation of the Yuan (II)

04.11.2014 | 00:00 | Valentin KATASONOV

…The reserve currency issuing countries have balance of payments deficits. It means that a reserve currency is a trap. Back in the early 1960s Belgian-American economist Robert Triffin said there is a fundamental incompatibility between the attainment of US global economic stability and having a single national currency perform the role of the world’s reserve currency… The dollar started to function as a real reserve currency only when the United States foreign trade deficit became stable…

Ukraine’s Debt Burden as Europe’s Next Big Headache

04.11.2014 | 00:00 | Olga SHEDROVA

On October 30 Russia, Ukraine and the European Commission signed a deal that will see Moscow resume vital supplies of gas to its ex-Soviet neighbor over the winter, as well as the transit to Europe… Will Ukraine carry out its commitments this time? Neither Moscow, nor Brussels could be sure of that. The document is signed by the Ukraine’s government which is to resign soon. Arseniy Yatsenyuk has chances to continue holding the position of Prime Minister. Not once he was responsible for Ukraine derailing the tripartite talks constantly changing its stance and putting forward unacceptable conditions…

Rampant Terror in Mexico

03.11.2014 | 00:00 | Nil NIKANDROV

The criminal statistics in Mexico are shocking. The US special services do what they want on Mexican soil. There are no restrictions whatsoever. Many Mexicans perceive it as occupation. The practice is justified by the need to fight drug trafficking though US specialists have hardly reached any great achievements to be praised for – drug flows to the US are on the rise… The US ghost economy needs the inflow of drug money and nobody is going to tighten the faucet. But the rampant drug trafficking has started to hit snags on the way. The disappearance of the students in the estate of Guerrero with the investigation still not over has become the grim and gloomy page in the contemporary Mexican history.

Mass unrests took place on Sunday, October 26, in the biggest city of the largest German land. It showed that immigration has become the most burning issue for the country.
