NATO’s Achilles’s Heel: Secession
15.11.2014 | 00:00 | Wayne MADSEN
It is clear that secessionist movements are the Achilles’s Heel of NATO. And they exist where NATO least expects them. There are increased calls for autonomy, secession, and outright independence in regions that host important NATO intelligence-gathering bases and sit astride NATO sea lanes. For example, the Cornish Mebyon Kernow movement has taken inspiration from the strength of the Scottish National Party to call for a Cornish parliament… Mec Vannin favors independence for the Isle of Man, located in the Irish Sea between Britain and Ireland. Celtic nationalism not only poses a problem for NATO in Britain, but Celtic nationalist movements in Brittany in France, where France maintains a naval base at Brest, and in Galicia in Spain, provide potential «soft power» salients against NATO in its own backyard…
Kiev’s High Hopes in the Republicans Will Be Dashed
14.11.2014 | 00:00 | Dmitry MININ
Republican victories in the US midterm elections – taking control of both houses of Congress – have kindled hopes in Kiev. It was thought that the generous American aid packages that were promised back during the protests on Maidan would now finally arrive, helping to pull the regime out of the hole it had dug for itself… A group of Republican senators has already promised that soon both houses of Congress can begin to debate the «Russian Aggression Prevention Act of 2014»… But in fact, Kiev’s calculations have been built on shaky ground…
India’s Foreign Policy: Interdependence of Delhi – Beijing –Washington Relations
14.11.2014 | 00:00 | Andrei VOLODIN
On May 26, 2014 Narendra Modi was sworn as the 16th Prime Minister of India – «the largest democracy of the world». .. The new India’s strategy to large extent depends on the personality of Narendra Modi, who is known for his backbone and clear vision of India’s role as an independent actor in international politics. The focus on national interests has become tangible in the contemporary foreign policy based on the India First principle… It’s not easy to implement the policy of «India’s interests go first» in the contemporary world. But the very existence of the state-civilization presupposes independent foreign policy. That’s why the triangle Delhi-Beijing-Washington is to be a balanced relationship.
Korean Unification: A Fleeting Opportunity
13.11.2014 | 00:00 | Alexander VORONTSOV
The governments of North and South Korea continue to repeat the mantra that they are committed to the idea of unifying their divided people. But as years go by, the tension between Seoul and Pyongyang continues, and there is no progress toward achieving that objective. According to public opinion polls, most South Koreans under the age of 40 are not interested in the unification of the peninsula. Although there is no public discussion, this critically important sector of the South Korean society is against any such plans. Decades have passed since the country was partitioned. The number of families separated by the demilitarized zone (DMZ) has dwindled and emotions have cooled. Many young people in the South increasingly see North Korea as a foreign country…
Viktor Orban Threatened by Maidan-Style Protest Movement
12.11.2014 | 10:23 | Vladislav GULEVICH
…The Hungarian prime minister’s independence, including with regard to Russia, has long irritated both Brussels and Washington. Viktor Orban’s statements regarding his intention of finding allies in Europe capable of opposing the introduction of new sanctions against Russia together have not gone unnoticed. Western capitals have been particularly outraged by the fact that on 4 November 2014, the Hungarian parliament passed a law allowing the construction of the South Stream pipeline to take place in Hungary, despite the position of the European Commission…
A Game of Scottish Solitaire for Europe (II)

…Various anti-crisis programs are being prepared in different parts of Europe. Until now the leaders of the Veneto self-determination movement have been sounding conciliatory enough. They wish to retain the euro while others call for leaving the eurozone and go back to national currencies. Marin Le Pen, the head of French National Front, is convinced that her country has to return the national currency, something possessed by 95% of the countries in the world as the circulation of euro makes thousands of enterprises go bankrupt… The economic problems faced by the European Union and the growth of separatist trends in Europe are two sides of the same coin.
The War against the Islamic State and the Boomerang Effect for Europe
12.11.2014 | 00:00 | Nikolai BOBKIN
The US administration, which began airstrikes on IS positions in Syria on 23 September without UN Security Council approval, is steadfastly refusing to cooperate with the Assad government… According to the UN the number of foreigners in Iraq and Syria taking part in military operations is growing at an unprecedented rate and has already reached 15,000 people. This data is confirmed by US intelligence. The majority of these foreigners are European citizens. There are far fewer Americans, since the Muslim community is not as large there, but for Europe, which does not have borders or a strict border regime, the return of European fighters from Syria could be a trying time. No one in Washington is worried about Europe’s vulnerability to the ‘boomerang effect’, and they have absolutely no regard for regional stability in the Middle East.

Who Did Oleg Tyagnybok Cause Inconvenience to?
11.11.2014 | 00:00 | Alexander DONETSKY
The Ukrainian Svoboda political party, whose leader Oleg Tyagnybok is known for his implacable contempt for the people like «Moskals» (derogatory for Russians), «Yids» (a slang Jewish ethnonym of Yiddish origin) and «Lyakhy» (the old Ukrainian exonym used in East Slavic languages), failed to reach the threshold level needed to get into the parliament. These are two things to be taken into account before any explanation of what happened is offered: 1) the number of seats for contenders had been defined before the election; 2) those who take part in the decision making process find it important to show that fascism is out of mainstream politics in the contemporary Ukraine…
The War in Rojava: The US and Turkish Roles in the Battle of Kobani
11.11.2014 | 00:00 | Mahdi Darius NAZEMROAYA
…The US-led bombing campaign in Syria is intended to weaken and destroy Syria as a functioning state. This is why the US has been bombing Syrian energy facilities and infrastructure, including transport pipes, under the excuse of preventing the ISIL from using it to sell oil and gather revenues… The Syrian government knows that the Washington’s anti-ISIL coalition is a façade and that the masquerade could end with a US-led offensive against Damascus if the US government and Pentagon believe that the conditions are right. On November 6, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem told the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar that Syria had asked the Russian Federation to accelerate the delivery of the S-300 anti-aircraft surface-to-air missile system to prepare for a possible Pentagon offensive.
Will a Neo-Socialist Oasis Reappear in Southern Arabia?
10.11.2014 | 11:20 | Wayne MADSEN
Yemen’s new government now includes, for the first time, members of the South Yemeni secessionist movement al-Hirak. The Yemeni government, which included members of the Shi’a Houthi guerrillas from the north of Yemen until they withdrew in protest, may lead the way for the restoration of the independence of the former People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) or, as it was commonly known, «South Yemen»…
US: Kicking Vietnam Syndrome Once and for All
10.11.2014 | 00:00 | Vladislav GULEVICH
The US is set to roll out a 50th anniversary commemoration of the Vietnam War… The United States Vietnam War Commemoration website omits something important – the history of post-war protest movement that hit the streets of US cities in the 1960-1970s. Nothing is said about the persecution of anti-war activists many of whom were war vets… According to Marjorie Cohn, a professor of law at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego, California, and a former President of the National Lawyers Guild, one of the most shameful legacies of the Vietnam War is the US military’s use of the deadly defoliant Agent Orange, dioxin… War crimes – such as the My Lai (part of Song My village located in South Vietnam’s Quang Ngai Province) massacre – were common. In 1968, US soldiers slaughtered 500 unarmed old men, women and children aged from 1 to 82 years old in the Vietnamese village of My Lai…

Kiev Recalls Geneva Only to Erase Minsk
09.11.2014 | 00:00 | Finian CUNNINGHAM
Kiev’s President Petro Poroshenko this week called on his fawning Uncle Sam to resuscitate the Geneva format of peace talks. This forum was first convoked back in April between the US, European Union, Russia and the Kiev regime, with the latter arrogating the title of «Ukraine». Then only two days after this sudden nostalgia for Geneva, the Kiev regime was accusing Russia of a major cross-border military invasion into eastern Ukraine. So, what is it? Peace talks, or war? Or maybe both at the same time? The trouble is the Western-backed Kiev regime doesn’t know what it wants…
