After two months of a total Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza, the World Health Organization is warning of a sharp rise in malnutrition and disease.
“We are breaking the bodies and minds of the children of Gaza. We are starving the children of Gaza. We are complicit,” said Dr. Michael Ryan, Executive Director of WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, speaking to reporters at the WHO headquarters.
“As a physician, I am angry. It is an abomination,” Ryan expressed, adding, “The current level of malnutrition is causing a collapse in immunity.”
As such, he warned of the increasing risks of diseases among women and children, such as pneumonia and meningitis.
On April 28, the International Court of Justice began week-long hearings to examine “Israel’s” obligations under international law, as warnings of famine continue to grow in Gaza.
