On June 12, Israel launched an overnight attack on Iran, killing senior military officials, targeting military infrastructure including nuclear sites, and killing civilians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the operation, dubbed “Operation Rising Lion”, would carry on until the threat is neutralized.

An attack on Iran is justified by the alleged threat of Iran developing a nuclear weapon. However, America’s intelligence services confirm that Iran is not developing a nuclear weapon. A deal can be made with Iran that includes inspections, although the US now demands that Iran also abandon its civilian nuclear power. As a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran is not allowed to develop nuclear weapons, but the treaty permits Iran to develop a civilian nuclear program. It is the US that breaches the NPT by attempting to deny Iran’s right to a civilian nuclear program. Furthermore, linking the nuclear negotiations to reducing Iran’s military capabilities and partnership with Yemen, Hezbollah and Hamas is a way to use the nuclear issue to push for Iran’s capitulation.

The attack on Russia’s nuclear deterrent likely occurred with the support from Western intelligence services and governments. Justifying an attack on nuclear forces by the right for self-defence is also an exercise in self-deception. This represented a huge step toward nuclear war and the elimination of arms control.
