Hope in 2011
Ramzy Baroud, Ma’an News Agency1/1/2011
When the Iraqi army fell before invading US and British troops in 2003, the latter’s mission seemed to be accomplished. But nearly eight years after the start of a war intended to shock and awe a whole population into submission, the Iraqi people continue to stand tall.
They have confronted and rejected foreign occupations, held their own against sectarianism, and challenged random militancy and senseless acts of terrorism.
For most of us, the Iraqi people’s resolve cannot be witnessed, but rather deduced. Eight years of military strikes, raids, imprisonments, torture, humiliation and unimaginable suffering were still not enough to force the Iraqis into accepting injustice as a status quo.
In August 2010, the United States declared the end of its combat mission in Iraq, promising complete withdrawal by the end of 2011. However, US military action has continued, only under different designations. The occupation of Iraq carries on, despite the tactical shifts of commands and the re-branding effort.
However, were it not for the tenacity of the Iraqi people, who manage to cross sectarian, political and ideological divides, there would be no talk of withdrawals or deadlines. There would be nothing but cheap oil, which could have ushered in a new golden age of imperialism – not in Iraq, but throughout the so-called Third World.
The Iraqi people have managed to stop what could have become a dangerous trend.
In 2010, Iraqis continued to hold strong, and civil societies throughout the world stood with them in solidarity, a solidarity that will continue until full sovereignty is attained. more.. e-mail
Europe’s alliance with Israel: aiding the occupation
Dr Daud Abdullah, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)12/15/2010
REVIEW: Europe’s alliance with Israel: aiding the occupation, Author: David Cronin, Paperback: 200 pages, Publisher: Pluto Press (2011)
Western journalists often shy away from writing on Palestine. They believe that so much has already been written about the century-old conflict that it is hard to find a new twist to excite and grip their readers. David Cronin has managed to do just that in his fascinating book. He makes a watertight case to prove that Europe is, in many ways, complicit in Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land.
In private, commentators and politicians may admit this; but no European author has, before now, summoned the courage to make the case in public. When the American academics John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt published their book The Israeli lobby and US Foreign Policy in 2007, it seemed that the taboo was broken; it could be only a matter of time before someone in Europe undertook a similar task, and Cronin is that someone. His book is of this genre and must, therefore, be seen as a ground-breaking publication.
The work embodies a wealth of carefully researched and documented information. The author made extensive use of official contacts and reports emanating from Brussels, the seat of the European Union. In a lucid and attractive manner he has subjected EU statements and policies to rigorous interrogation, and has exposed the often yawning gap between what is said and what is (actually hardly ever) done. The book is scathing in its criticism of European officialdom, which Cronin describes as “lily-livered” [133].more.. e-mail
Jeff Goldberg Despairs About Israel
MJ Rosenberg, Palestine Note 12/30/2010
I rarely, if ever, agree with the Atlantic’s Jeff Goldberg about the Middle East. He is the staunchest advocate of Israel’s case in the media today.
How big is Goldberg? So big that when Fidel Castro decided to improve relations with Israel, he invited Goldberg to Cuba and said nice things about the Jewish state. Prime Minister Netanyahu immediately responded and a shift in policy occurred.
For years now, Goldberg, more than any “pro-Israel” organization, has been the most effective advocate of the status quo, with the exception of the now embattled and teetering lobby.
And this week Goldberg had an epiphany: if Israel continues on its current course, it is finished. Writing from Israel, he says that, although in the past, he always believed that Israel would choose democracy over permanent occupation, he is no longer sure.
“I will admit here that my assumption has usually been that Israelis, when they finally realize the choice before them (many have already, of course, but many more haven’t, it seems), will choose democracy, and somehow extract themselves from the management of the lives of West Bank Palestinians. But I’ve had a couple of conversations this week with people, in Jerusalem and out of Jerusalem, that suggest to me that democracy is something less than a religious value for wide swaths of Israeli Jewish society. I’m speaking here of four groups, each ascendant to varying degrees….” more.. e-mail
The death of Jawaher Abu-Rahma is a direct result of occupation and the inhumane violence and brutality against the nonviolent demonstrators in Bilin
Palestine Monitor: 1 Jan 2011 – Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, the Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative and the President of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society stated that the death of Jawaher Abu Rahma is a direct result of occupation and the means of violence and brutality that is inflicted against the demonstrators participating in peaceful and nonviolent demonstrations against the Apartheid Wall and the settlements. It was stated that she suffered from severe respiratory distress which lead to cardiac arrest. The medical teams tirelessly resuscitated her three times, however failed as a result of the severe gas inhalation. Jawaher Abu Rahmah was the sister of Bassem Abu Rahmah who was also killed during a peaceful protest in Bil’in on April 17th, 2010. Dr. Barghouthi also said that the martyrdom of Jawaher Abu Rahma is not the first case, and that it is extremely dangerous since the gas that is used is highly concentrated and dispersed…more
