UN Secretary General seeks to appease Israel
Ramona Wadi, Middle East Monitor (MEMO)8/20/2013
The latest meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on August 16 elicited very weak criticism of Israel’s continued occupation of Palestine. The Israeli Embassy of New Zealand has published the statements of both leaders, indicating a general consensus of allowing Israel to remain unscathed despite its obvious violations of international law.
According to Netanyahu, the main obstacle to the so-called peace process is Palestinian refusal to recognise the Jewish State, thus dismissing the international law violations caused by the continuous expansion of settlements. “As far as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, we have to get to the root cause of the problem and the root cause was and remains the persistent refusal to recognise the Jewish State in any boundary. It doesn’t have to do with the settlements – that’s an issue that has to be resolved, but this is not the reason that we have a continual conflict.” As further assertion of illegal dominance, Netanyahu adds that “The real issue is how to get a demilitarised Palestinian state to finally recognise and accept the one and only Jewish state.” Israel keeps reinforcing the exclusive character of the Jewish state while expecting a democratic recognition of its illegal presence. Hence the necessity of Palestinians living under occupation to live in subservience, lacking any form of legitimate protection in order to ensure the survival of a state which downplays any form of violence against Palestinians by portraying itself as allegedly facing political isolation while seeking to disassociate Israel from its inflicted atrocities.
Once again acting as an imperialist interlocutor, Ban Ki Moon reinforced Netanyahu’s discourse through a series of diplomatic statements which rendered Palestinians spectators of their own destiny. While gently admonishing Netanyahu about the occupation and settlements, the UN Secretary General affirmed the ‘honour of visiting Israel’ and praised Netanyahu for ‘having the courage to set out a solution as a priority’, effectively absolving Israel of premeditated settlement expansion agreements….more..e-mail

Israel destroys Bedouin homes in Jerusalem, threatens to expel community
Mairav Zonszein, +972 Magazine8/20/2013
On 19 August 2013, the Ministry of Interior demolished all six residential structures of Tal Adasa, a Bedouin community living within Jerusalem s municipal boundaries, close to the Palestinian neighborhood of Beit Hanina, B Tselem has reported. The community is part of the al-Ka abneh tribe, which has been living in the area since the 1950s.
In addition to the demolition, municipal inspectors informed community members they have 10 days to evacuate the area before being forcefully removed, and ordered them to clear the demolition debris themselves. Otherwise, the members were told, they would be forced to pay tens of thousands of shekels to cover the cost of debris removal and could face arrest.
Since Israel s occupation of the West Bank and annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967, the community members have not filed for Jerusalem residency, and according to their legal status, they are not permanent resident of Israel.
In 1995, the Jerusalem Municipality forced the community to leave its previous area of residence, near the Atarot Industrial Park, and demolished their homes. The community relocated to the current site, close to the town of Bir Nabala, remaining within the municipal boundaries of Jerusalem. Subsequently, they began earning a living not only from herding sheep and goats as before, but also from cultivating plots of land owned by residents of Beit Hanina. The community has never been connected to Jerusalem s water or electricity supplies.
Since 2005, the Jerusalem Municipality has been pressuring them to relocate again.
In 2006, the separation barrier was constructed to the east and west of the community s site of residence, rendering it an enclave within the Jerusalem municipal jurisdiction that is isolated from the rest of the West Bank. As the community members are not registered as East Jerusalem residents, they cannot move freely within the boundaries of Jerusalem. But because of the wall, they have been unable to directly access the nearby Palestinian neighborhoods of Bir Nabala and a-Ram….more..e-mail

In West Bank, the logic of annexation supersedes the rule of law
Yossi Gurvitz, Yesh Din, +972 Magazine8/20/2013
Israeli authorities aren t merely incompetent when it comes to defending the rights of Palestinians in Area C they are part and parcel of a process dedicated to the area s annexation.
Last week, IDF forces removed, with hardly any noise, settlers from the lands of Muhammad Ibrahim Ali Shabana, a resident of the village of Sinjil in the West Bank. The removal took place after the invasion by settlers Yonathan Rothschild and Yehuda Elitzur. Thus ended a long legal saga which proves, yet again, the incompetence of the Israeli authorities when it comes to defending the rights of Palestinians in Area C.
The story begins in 2003, at the height of the Second Intifada. Suicide bombers blow up in the streets of Israel without the IDF or the Shin Bet being able to stop them. At the same tim
e, the IDF kills thousands of Palestinians. And the settlers, with close government support, use the media smoke screen provided by the greatest bloodletting in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1948 to erect a series of outposts. One of these is Givat Ha Roeh, situated partly on the private Palestinian lands of the villagers of Sinjil.

Here events follow a familiar path: In 2004, the military commander issues a demarcation order for the area of the outpost but, lo and behold, fails to enforce its own edict. A Demarcation Order, a means to deal with the evacuation of unauthorized outposts by demarcating and forbidding entry into the area, is yet another tool the army uses very rarely (less than a dozen have been issued).
As a result of the lack of enforcement, the outpost like many others rapidly grows at the expense of more illegally-grabbed Palestinian land, with the authorities looking the other way. In 2006, a first petition demanding the enforcement of the demarcation order is tabled. The state, lying as usual, promises the court that it will enforce the order, and so the petition is dismissed. The order is surprise! not enforced, and a year later, in 2007, a new petition is filed. This time the state openly declares it has no intention of enforcing the orders, citing political considerations.more..e-mail

Erasing Palestine From the Map
Robert Ross, CounterPunch8/20/2013
The Washington Post’s Distorted Cartography
A foreign affairs blogger for The Washington Post recently posted 40 Maps that explain the world. Some of the maps are important ( Economic inequality around the world ), some are interesting ( Meet the world s 26 remaining monarchies ), but others grossly distort the reality they purportedly represent. Chief among this latter category is How far Hamas s rockets can reach into Israel .
All about Hamas’s rockets
There are two principal problems with this map. First, the map attempts to explain the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by pointing exclusively to the capacity of Hamas s rockets to reach ever-extensive points within Israel. Four color-coded, concentric semi-circles spread out from the Gaza Strip, each showing the distance different rockets could travel, the furthest making it all the way to the Dead Sea. Max Fisher, the Post’s chief foreign affairs blogger, writes in a caption to the map, This helps drive home why Israel is so concerned about Hamas, the Gaza-based Islamist group, and in particular about its access to Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets. Those are the ones that can reach into the light-yellow region.
Erasing Palestine from the Map
The second major problem with this map is that Palestine both historic and contemporary is erased from it. A white dotted line traces the border between the West Bank and Israel but the line is barely visible beneath the yellow-shaded ring. Moreover, West Bank (not occupied West Bank, or occupied Palestinian territory, or Palestinian West Bank or Palestine, mind you) appears in font so small that it seems to designate some tiny city northeast of Jerusalem, not the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967….more..e-mail
