Israel cracks down on dissent
Mya Guarnieri, +972 Magazine8/7/2014
More than 1,000 Palestinian citizens of Israel were arrested by Israeli police during Operation Protective Edge, according to a lawyer representing a number of the detainees. While some were arrested for protesting the Israeli military incursion into Gaza, dozens were held without charge.
Maisa Arshid, an attorney for dozens of the detainees, says that 20 to 30 Palestinians were picked up by Israeli police every week in the Nazareth area alone. All of them are accused of participating in illegal demonstrations, she says. But, she adds, Part of these demos were permitted by the police themselves.
In many cases, there is no evidence that the accused has participated in a protest other than a policeman s word.
Arshid adds that police frequently held people for short periods without registering the detention, likely putting the number of those who were picked up by the police even higher than 1,000.
When the wave of arrests began earlier in July, Palestinian citizens were detained and quickly released. Some were put on house arrest, some were ordered to do community service. But as the month and Israel s assault on Gaza has worn on, Palestinian citizens were subject to longer and longer detainments. Last week, Arshid visited a group of detainees who had been held without charge for nine days. Each day the court is delaying their hearing, she says, adding that hearings initially scheduled for last Sunday were pushed back to Tuesday.
It s a way of prolonging their detentions and it has a chilling effect on demonstrations against Operation Protective Edge, Arshid argues. If people in the street know that people have been arrested for nine days, it will prevent protest. She says that the detentions are a way to terrorize the population into silence.more..e-mail

Gaza dispatch: Why the destruction in Beit Hanoun is different
Samer Badawi, +972 Magazine8/7/2014
Local residents tell me that previous Israeli attacks on Beit Hanoun had targeted homes much closer to the border. This time, the military took aim at the center of town. Why?
As negotiations over a long-term Gaza truce draw to a close in Cairo, their success may hinge on a key Hamas demand facilitating civilian access to the West Bank. The demand, say observers here, is about more than humanitarian needs. Linking the two territories would strengthen a Palestinian reconciliation deal forged in April a deal Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refused to recognize.
On the ground in Gaza there is little evidence that Netanyahu intends to accede to the Hamas pre-condition. Nowhere is that more plain than in Beit Hanoun, the Palestinian town at Gaza s northeastern edge that is home to the only civilian passage out of the territory. The lone administrative building on the Palestinian side of the Erez crossing has been destroyed by an Israeli airstrike, and during a site visit there on August 6, the only incoming passenger was a foreign journalist.
Nearby residents say the desolation is nothing new. Permission to exit through Erez falls to the Israeli Security Agency, and permits are limited to humanitarian cases, with an emphasis on urgent medical ones, according to the Israeli human rights organization Gisha.
What s different after Israel s latest military campaign here is that the areas surrounding Erez have themselves become no-go zones, pummeled by shelling and airstrikes that have displaced thousands and destroyed homes deep into the heart of Beit Hanoun.

Kaddish for Gaza
Prof. Dr. Rolf Verleger, Alternative Information Center8/6/2014
Does the Holocaust presently entitle the state of Israel to starve and massacre Gaza’s population?
This is from a talk given at the manifestation organized by the German-Arabic Society in front of Bellevue castle (office of the German president) in Berlin, July 30, 2014
My father survived Auschwitz, and my mother survived concentration camps in Estonia. When rearing me they made it clear that there is the choice between good and bad and that people are responsible for what they have done; They educated me within the ethics of the Jewish religion.
Today, alternative ethics apply to many Jews. One of these ethics, the one that is most compatible to Germany, reads: We Jews are above all: victims. Today, the state of Israel is victim of eruptions of incomprehensible hate from Arabs and anti-Semites.
I would like to ask the following questions to all those people who say things like that.
The fact that none of my grandparents survived the Third Reich did this entitle the Jewish partisans and the Israeli army in 1947/48 to expel hundreds of thousands of Arabs from Israel?
The “Aryanization” of my great-grandfather’s parcel of land in Berlin did this entitle the state of Israel to confiscate land and property of the Arab expatriates in the early 1950s?
The killing of my father’s brothers and sisters by the SS – does this entitle the state of Israel to exert the dictate of an occupational regime for 47 years?more..e-mail

Gaza war: It s about keeping the Palestinians under control
Noam Sheizaf, +972 Magazine8/7/2014
Israel has been waging a single war since the mid-70s. Its goal is to avoid sharing power or assets with the other people living on this land. The Gaza war wasn t about creating a new order, but about maintaining the old one.
At the time of this writing, Operation Protective Edge has come to an end and the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is delicately holding. Though indirect talks are taking place in Cairo, reports from the negotiations indicate an Israeli refusal to lift the siege on Gaza. Hamas has vouched to fight on if the ceasefire doesn t hold, but the humanitarian crisis in the Strip is likely to make that difficult.
As things now stand, it s clear that declarations by Israeli ministers and generals on a new reality in the south disguise a different, opposite goal for this war: Protective Edge was carried out in order to restore things to way they were before June 2014. In other words, to maintain the status quo.
This has been the goal of Israeli policy for many years now. Since the end of the 1973 war, Israel has been waging a single war against a single adversary the Palestinians. The first Lebanon War, the Int
ifadas, Cast Lead, Protective Edge and most of the military operations in between were all part of a military solution to the Palestinian problem. Even the notable exception the 2006 war in Lebanon was leftover from the the 1982 invasion, which was conducted against the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Despite all the threats that came and went over the years the Syrians, Iran s nuclear program, the axis of evil, international jihad at the end of the day, it all comes down to the Palestinian issue. The reason why all those threats are constantly debated and inflated in Israel is to hide this fact.more..e-mail

Canadian Jewish Politics: From Anti-fascism to Zionism
Dissident Voice: 7 Aug 2014 – On July 30, Dissident Voice published an article by Yves Engler remarking on increasingly strident support for Israel among sections of the Toronto Jewish community. He describes aggressive Jewish support for the child-murderers of the Israeli Defense Forces, including attacks on protesters like himself, then contrasts this with what Jews were like before world war two: The idea that Toronto s Jewish community in 2014 would be front-and-centre in backing racist militarism is profoundly depressing and quite the historic reversal. Seven decades ago righteous Jewish youth fought back against fascist thugs terrorizing non-Anglo-Saxons in the 1933 Christie Pits Riot. But perhaps the reason Jews defended other minorities against fascist thugs is because it was in their interests to do so. Perhaps that s why many of them support racist militarism today so long as it s Jewish racist militarism. A consistent sense of Jewish ethnic identity would lead to strong opposition to…more
