Don’t cry for me: A letter from a little girl in Gaza
Sam Bahour, +972 Magazine 8/9/2014
With Palestinian children in Gaza bearing the brunt of Israel’s offensive on the Strip, this is what one little girl may have written to us – had she the chance.
As the latest horrific obscenity of Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip continues, the death toll mounts. Palestinian children are paying the highest price, both those who are killed and wounded, and, maybe even more so, those who survive.
Since I have written for decades about how Israel’s prolonged military occupation and endless violations of international law – let alone its blatant disregard for its very own self-interests – would get us to this very point, fresh analysis and fresh vantage points are difficult to find. The only words I can muster now, while the images of the carnage are freshly etched into my mind, are the words that may have come from one of the child victims whose life was cut short by a U.S.-supplied Israeli F-16 fighter jet missile.
Below is the imagined letter from the victim:
Dear Humankind, Hi. My name is Eman; it means ‘faith’ in Arabic. I doubt you will have seen or remember me; only particular photos make it to your TV screen, those are the ones you will remember. I’m a Palestinian child from Gaza. I like my dolls, playing with my sister and swimming. I was told that many of you are crying for me, but please don’t cry for me. I just arrived to this place and wanted to write to let you know that I’m OK. Really, I’m fine. I just miss Mommy.
There are a lot of people here, just like back home in Gaza. Lots of Palestinian kids too, some have been here for a very long time. Why would you want to cry for only me? more.. e-mail
Gaza: The bomb-rebuild cycle must stop
Rachel Shabi, Al Jazeera 8/10/2014
Pounded by three wars in the past six years, what’s to stop a reconstructed Gaza being bombed again in the future?
The terrible scale of destruction in Gaza isn’t even the start of it. As a three-day truce last week made clear, Israel’s 29-day military offensive has levelled the Palestinian strip: entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble; thousands of homes destroyed, leaving at least 65,000 people homeless.
Schools, hospitals, mosques, a university, a sewage plant, the strip’s only power plant and dozens of factories were hit. Stark images depicting the damage have accompanied stunned words from humanitarian workers. Trond Husby, who heads the UN’s development programme in Gaza, told the UK’s Daily Telegraph newspaper: “I was in Somalia for two years, Sierra Leone for five, and also South Sudan and Uganda, and this beats them all for the level of destruction.”
If the material ruin defies comprehension, the human toll is all but unspeakable: To date, 1,911 deaths, with UN figures indicating that three-quarters of those killed were civilian, including 429 children. Close to 10,000 injured people – some of them disabled for life – including 2,000 children. And we haven’t yet got to the deeper shattering, the traumatised minds that professionals will try to piece back together – some 400,000 children in Gaza are in need of psycho-social support, according to the UN children’s fund, UNICEF.
But what adds another layer of tragedy to this shocking level of injury is that Gaza has been here before. Several times. We are witnessing the latest, most punishing round of a catastrophic cycle in Gaza, whereby pounded homes and lives are rebuilt with the help of international aid, only to be torn apart again a few years later. Small wonder, then, that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, speaking at a special meeting of the General Assembly on Wednesday, said: “We will build again but this must be the last time to rebuild. This must stop now.” more.. e-mail
This is what life in Gaza sounds like
Samer Badawi, +972 Magazine 8/10/2014
I have heard the sounds of war before. In Iraq, I was jolted from sleep by the sound of incoming rockets, massive truck bombs, and exploding IEDs. In Afghanistan, I temporarily lost my hearing when an explosives-packed SUV detonated meters from my office. I have heard windows shatter and bystanders scream. And I have seen the aftermath: sinewy flesh, bone shards, jaw fragments.
But I have never heard the discord of sounds, the cacophony of violence, that Gaza’s Palestinians – all of them – know so well. Here, the ever-present drone of machines overhead mingles with the scream of jet sorties, tank shelling, and bursts of heavy guns from naval battleships. Here, modern warfare’s full range of fronts is audible everywhere and all at once.
I share a flat with two Palestinian journalists in the heart of Gaza City. Each night, we sit on the balcony floor in the dark and listen to the drones. Sometimes they seem to hover just over us, stationary and menacing. Once, my colleague snapped a photo, and the flash went off. We crawled inside in a hurry, wondering whether the drone operator, somewhere far away, would think the snap something else and decide to “liquidate” us.
The sound of Israeli drones is ever-present in Gaza’s skies (via Lara Aburamadan):
Mostly, though, there’s no time for such calculations. When we hear an F-16 begin to descend, we have no idea where the missile will fall. The one exception is when a drone “knocks” on the target beforehand. When that happens, we grab our cameras and wait for the strike. It usually comes within a few minutes. In other cases, all we hear is the gathering thunder of jet engines, a pause as the “payload” is released, and then a massive boom followed by the reverb of debris crashing to the ground. Sometimes, our building shakes. more.. e-mail
’Era of Oslo is over’
Amira Howeidy, Al-Ahram Weekly 8/7/2014
A diverse Palestinian delegation withstood irreconcilable differences to push for a ceasefire in Gaza as new internal dynamics came into play.
The abrupt arrival of a Palestinian delegation in Cairo a day after the collapse of a UN brokered ceasefire agreement this weekend (August 2-3) appeared to be an odd development in the apocalyptic scenes emerging out of the complicated Gaza crisis. After announcing the end of the short lived truce, Israel said it was boycotting negotiations mediated by Egypt and was mulling the idea of a unilateral ceasefire as it began redeploying its ground forces in Gaza.
With seemingly noth
ing to negotiate about in Cairo in light of Israel’s position and absence, Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas announced that a delegation would fly to Egypt anyway, regardless of developments on the ground. As Palestinian delegates landed in Cairo Saturday and Sunday the question posed itself: What are they going to negotiate about when the door has been shut by Tel Aviv?
Scepticism reigned supreme. The Palestinian delegation appointed by Abbas is already heterogeneous with the two main Islamic resistance movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad (whose raison d’etre is fighting Israeli occupation with arms and categorically oppose the conditions of the peace talks) )on the one side and on the other, Azzam Al-Ahmad, Central Committee member of the rival Fatah movement (which leads the PA and now frozen peace talks with Israel), in addition to the Abbas appointed intelligence chief Majed Faraj, who is accused by resistance groups of arresting their fighters in the West Bank, as per the PA’s security commitments with Israel. Delegates from the left-leaning Popular and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PLFP, DLFP) and the Abbas-allied small socialist Al-Shaab Party, with little influence on the ground, were included to convey an image of a unified all-encompassing Palestinian accord. more.. e-mail
