Following a Yemeni blockade, commercial traffic passing through the Red Sea has dropped. Global shipping website Marine Traffic (MarineTraffic.com) notes that major companies like MSC, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and CMA CGM have suspended shipments through the region, instead re-routing their vessels around the entirety of Africa.
The Yemeni blockade comes as a response to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. As 40% of global international trade passes by Yemen through the Red Sea, the ramifications of this blockade could be enormous.
