More than 1.5 years have passed since the beginning of Israel’s genocidal operations in Gaza, under the veneer of eliminating Hamas. Israel has been unable to inflict any major blow to Hamas but has devastated the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

Children of War: How Gaza Became a Graveyard for Human Rights

Unprecedented Violence and Humanitarian Collapse

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has unleashed reprehensible atrocities on the Palestinian civilians, using Hamas’ attack on Tel Aviv as an excuse. Hamas killed around, 1139 Israeli citizens and took 200 Israeli national’s hostage. The Zionist state’s blockade of Gaza since 2007 triggered this violent attack by Hamas. In a disproportionate response, Israel unleashed unprecedented violence and destruction in the Gaza Strip. Reports suggest that more than 70 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure, including healthcare and housing, has been destroyed. Moreover, most of the water, sewerage, and energy structures of the region have also been destroyed intentionally by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

According to some conservative estimates, more than 60000 Palestinian civilians have been killed, with the highest ever recorded proportion of child deaths—approximately 17000—in any modern urban conflict. In reality, the actual death toll of this genocide is higher than what is estimated. According to a UNICEF report, over 50000 Palestinian children have been killed or injured in this conflict. It further states that a huge proportion of the children injured in the conflict require amputation. The UNICEF report states that the current situation in the region is causing “unimaginable horrors”.

The incessant war crimes of the IDF in Gaza are setting the stage for a new global war

Western Complicity and Global Silence

The Western nations, including the United States, the self-proclaimed champions of human rights, have abetted the IDF’s blockade of humanitarian aid and the indiscriminate use of force in Gaza. Global and regional protests against the Israeli war crimes in the region have been muted and suppressed by Western nations and media. The so-called peacemaking US President Donald Trump has also supported the Zionist government in unleashing violence on the civilians of the Gaza Strip. His sole policy towards the Middle Eastern region is to help Israel gain recognition from regional countries. Trump’s recent high-profile visit to the Middle East is being considered a missed opportunity and a glaring omission with significant consequences due to his failure to yield any solution to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

After the collapse of the negotiations in March this year, the Zionist government blocked the entrance of food, water, medicine, and all sorts of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, creating the worst man-made humanitarian crisis in history. More than 765000 Palestinians have been forcefully displaced by the IDF since the end of the ceasefire on March 18, 2025. The IDF has destroyed all but one hospital in the Gaza Strip.

Global Consequences of Western Silence

The majority of the Gazans currently live in abysmal conditions, in temporary shelters and ruined homes, and are stuffed within less than 12 percent of Gaza’s total area. The Zionist government has imposed strict restrictions on their freedom of movement. Disruptions in fundamental humanitarian needs and services, access to medications, food, and safe water have wreaked havoc on their lives. The US and Israel-backed so-called Humanitarian Fund has not only proved inadequate, but also a death trap for the desperate citizens seeking food. The IDF is intentionally targeting Palestinian children. According to the UN (OCHA), around 12000 children under five years of age are currently suffering from acute malnutrition, marking a record high.

The long-term effects of this genocide on the survivors will be much greater than any conservative estimates in terms of suffering, mental health, and injuries, especially for children. The deliberate destruction and targeting of health facilities and services in Gaza by the IDF has also undermined newborn and child survival due to an exceptional rise in childhood diseases such as dysentery, acute respiratory infections, and diarrhea. The IDF’s use of starvation as a weapon of war is akin to genocide.

The Standing Together for Nutrition Consortium has recently published a comment in The Lancet, demanding global action against Israel for using starvation as a weapon of war. The consortium has also pointed out that this deliberate starvation and undernutrition could become the root cause for future conflicts. Undoubtedly, if an entire generation of the Palestinians grew up traumatized, hungry, and hopeless, all of us are responsible for setting the stage for the future sufferings of victims of other wars as well.

The international reports of mass starvation and suffering from the Gazans are not only a wake-up call for people around the world, but also speak volumes about the cruelty of the incumbent unipolar liberal world order. The United Nations and other Western organizations have failed to stop the Western powers from causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians around the world since the end of World War 2. The incessant war crimes of the IDF in Gaza are setting the stage for a new global war. It has also reignited the sense of deprivation and exploitation among the citizens of third-world nations. The failure of the UN to stop the IDF’s war crimes in Gaza has expedited the rise of a new, multipolar world order.
