Embedded in a Media Fantasy World: The case against objective reporting By William Bowles

26 September 2004

I recently had a brief exchange with the Washington correspondent for the Independent, Andrew Buncombe over his ‘paper’s coverage of events in Iraq. Now although I’ve never actually met Andy, and I’m sure he’s a decent fellow, I brought to his attention a recent ‘War Report’ compiled by an Iraqi journalist that itemizes the horrors being visited on the Iraqi people eg, 14 enormous cluster (anti-personnel) bombs each of which contains 2000 so-called bomblets as well as napalm bombs dropped on the village of Zaydan, 20km south of al-Fallujah. At least forty-four people were massacred in the small village. According to the report 15 of the dead were children, 10 women, and nine were elderly persons. Seven children are in critical condition, and eight women and five men were also wounded. Also killed in the raid was ‘Adil ‘Ali Hamdan the General Administrative Director of al- Fallujah General Hospital. His wife and two of his children were killed as well, and two other children of his were wounded. [1]

Rumsfeld: Iraq Troop Pull-Out Possible Before Peace:

“Any implication that that place has to be peaceful and perfect before we can reduce coalition and U.S. forces I think would obviously be unwise, because it’s never been peaceful and perfect and it isn’t likely to be.

A World Without Politics? By William Bowles

18 September 2004

Is like envisaging a world without sex, an unthinkable idea you’d assume, after all politics like sex makes the world go round and indeed it (they) still do even if buried under a blizzard of reality TV programmes, an endless procession of ‘celebrities’, patriotic parades and other assorted diversions, the latest of which, in the UK anyway, is the government’s ban on foxhunting (the bill passed but delayed from implementation for a couple of years, so that the ‘masses’ will be guaranteed an endless diversion from more pressing issues such as the future of the species).

Reelect the “Fucking Crazies”? By William Bowles

16 September 2004

An essay I’ve just made available by Gabriel Kolko, The Lesser Evil posits the view that electing Kerry poses a greater threat to peace and stability in the world than reelecting the “fucking crazies” to quote Colin Powell. Kolko’s thesis rests on the premise that it’s military alliances that pose the greatest threat to the planet, hence reelecting the Bush Gang further erodes the possibility of alliances being maintained and developed. Without alliances, the US imperium is further weakened as the events of the past eighteen months have shown.

Further Developments By William Bowles

14 September 2004

After writing my previous essay, I realised that I was touching on a number of quite fundamental issues that required further investigation, not the least of which is the issue of the nature, formation and the possible direction that opposition to the imperium could take. I admit that this is mostly speculation but speculation based upon already visible trends that I touched upon that point toward these new formations and new alliances that could come from the most unlikely directions.

Memories of Development By William Bowles

12 September 2004

Being raised in a world of socialist ideas and culture is both a blessing and a curse, the curse being one’s conscience. Some socialists I have known have no problem reconciling their philosophy with their jobs (aside from the occasional ‘twinge’), reasoning that one has to make a living somehow and I would never pass judgement on their choice, it’s just not something that I have been able to do and live with. Once selected, the worst thing one can do is feel endless guilt about it and worse still, do nothing to assuage the guilt.

(non)Sense & sensibility By William Bowles

9 September 2004

My folks cut their left-wing political teeth so-to-speak in the 1930s – the anti-fascist movement, the Spanish Civil War, the unemployed struggles and of course, defence of the Soviet Union was the stuff of their lives. I say of course because in the 1930s, much like today in some respects, the world was polarised. The majority of the Left viewed the Soviet Union as the only defence against the rise of Fascism with the Western powers quite rightly seen at best as appeasers of Fascism and at worst in direct collusion because of Fascism’s openly voiced objective of destroying socialism and socialist ideas.

When The Fiends Cry, “Kill!”:

As I write this, seven Marines were blown to bits in Iraq, many more wounded. The fiends responsible for this barbarity are not worthy of a single American vote.
