Boycotting the boycotters
Gideon Levy, Ha’aretz5/16/2010
Most people here are appalled at the notion that anybody beyond Israel’s borders would think to boycott their country, products or universities. Boycotts, after all, are viewed in Israel as illegitimate. Anyone who calls for such a step is perceived as an anti-Semite and Israel-hater who is undermining the state’s very right to exist. In Israel itself, those who call for a boycott are branded as traitors and heretics. The notion that a boycott, limited as it may be, is likely to convince Israel to change its ways – and for its own benefit – is not tolerated here.
Even an obvious, logical step – like the Palestinian Authority’s boycott of products made in the settlements – is viewed by hypocritical Israeli eyes as provocative. Moreover, while the international boycott against apartheid South Africa is credited with leading to the regime’s downfall, here it is considered irrelevant and unworthy of comparison.
It would be possible to identify with these intolerant reactions were it not for the fact that Israel itself is one of the world’s prolific boycotters. Not only does it boycott, it preaches to others, at times even forces others, to follow in tow. Israel has imposed a cultural, academic, political, economic and military boycott on the territories. At the same time, almost no one here utters a dissenting word questioning the legitimacy of these boycotts. Yet the thought of boycotting the boycotter? Now that’s inconceivable.
The most brutal, naked boycott is, of course, the siege on Gaza and the boycott of Hamas. At Israel’s behest, nearly all Western countries signed onto the boycott with inexplicable alacrity. This is not just a siege that has left Gaza in a state of shortage for three years. Nor is it just a complete (and foolish ) boycott of Hamas, save for the discussions over abducted soldier Gilad Shalit. It’s a series of cultural, academic, humanitarian and economic boycotts. Israel threatens nearly every diplomat who seeks to enter Gaza to see firsthand the unbearable sights.more..e-mail
Nakba Day is a Reminder That George Mitchell Can Not Ignore Palestinian Refugees
Yousef Munayyer, Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development5/19/2010
Proximity talks signaling the restart of Palestinian-Israeli negotiations, which have been on hold for years, are beginning amidst an important reminder of the root cause of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Saturday, May 15, marked Nakba Day. The Nakba, Arabic for “catastrophe,” was the depopulation of Palestine of its native inhabitants which took place around the emergence of the state of Israel from 1947-1949. Little known to most Americans is the massacre of Palestinians at Deir Yassin, which left dozens of women and children slaughtered. It is marked on April 9, a date which highlights the fact that Palestinians were being ethnically cleansed even before the Arab armies declared war on Israel in May of 1948. The Dahmash mosque massacre, marked on July 12, witnessed the gunning down of Palestinian civilians seeking refuge in a mosque. It was one of the worst massacres of the period.
Yet the day on which the Jewish state was established, is the day Palestinians mark their suffering. This is not, as some would suggest, because Palestinians oppose the existence of a safe haven for Jews. Rather it is because the existence of this state means that hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees could not return to their homes – and still cannot to this day.
Some will say that Palestinians and Israelis have two irreconcilable narratives and for this reason ought to avoid talk about history. Truth and Reconciliation Commissions in other countries have, however, played a key role in helping victims of terrible injustices to understand in more detail what was done to them and by whom. The facts known today tell of the reality that befell Palestinians and tragically and terribly altered the trajectory of their individual and collective existence. Yet there is much more that will surely come to light as Israeli archives are examined and as aging conquerors examine their consciences.more..e-mail
Letter to the Editor; USA, apartheid and road construction
Dr. Ghassan Khatib, Ma’an News Agency5/19/2010
In his article US funds Israel’s ‘apartheid’ roads plan Jonathan Cook levels a number of serious accusations against the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
While his disdain for Israel’s occupation is to be applauded, his criticisms of the PNA ignore some fundamental facts with regards to road construction in the occupied Palestinian Territory. After studying the map referred to in the article (which compares a 2004 Israeli proposal with USAID funded roads), it is clear that all of the “22%” of the roads identified are not new roads, but are roads that already exist and are being rehabilitated to ensure both safety and easiness of travel for West Bank residents.
In the light of previous reports, including the article in The Nation and Jonathan Cook’s article published in several outlets, a review meeting with concerned civil society organizations and representatives of relevant Ministries was conducted. After deliberation and discussions, the meeting concluded that what was presented in the article is simply not true.
First, there are no new roads being built, second, the PNA and not USAID makes the ultimate decisions regarding proposed roads. Third, all the roads being worked on are part of the Palestinian map of 2004, which, in certain areas intersects with the Israeli map.
In 2004, under the Israel’s government lead by then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, there were moves on the part of the Israelis to separate and limit contact between Palestinians and Israelis and establish more segregated roads in the West Bank. At that time the Israelis produced a map that included already existing West Bank roads in order to divide them between Palestinians and Israelis. We never accepted such plans for segregating roads and the PNA is adamant in perusing Palestinian right to use any road in the West Bank and any road within the entire Palestinian Territory.more..e-mail
International orgs call on Israel to immediately release rights defenders
Electronic Intifada: 19 May 2010 – On 6 May 2010, at 03:10am, 16 members of the Israeli General Security Services (GSS) and the Israeli police force raided the family home of Mr. Ameer Makhoul. After meeting him last night, Mr. Makhoul’s lawyers confirmed that he was suffering from exhaustion — as a result of sleep deprivation — and that he had been subjected to various forms of intensive interrogation, raising fears of possible torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
The return of the colonial: Laor’s “The Myths of Liberal Zionism” reviewed
Electronic Intifada: 19 May 2010 – Israeli new mandarins have to try to sell settler-colonialism to Western states with populations that increasingly regard Zionism’s spiritual core and physical reality as somewhere on the spectrum between mildly embarrassing and overtly revolting. It is those mandarins that anti-Zionist Israeli poet Yitzhak Laor meticulously vivisects in The Myths of Liberal Zionism .
Gaza crisis “far beyond humanitarian”
Electronic Intifada: 19 May 2010 – DUBAI (IRIN) – With a failing economy, rising unemployment and deteriorating power, sanitation and health facilities, the health of Gaza’s population continues to worsen, according to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report. In contrast, modest improvements have been made in the West Bank.

Electronic Intifada: 19 May 2010 – RAMALLAH, occupied West Bank (IPS) – When internationally renowned linguist, philosopher and political analyst Noam Chomsky was barred from entering the occupied West Bank, he joined a chorus of Jewish intellectuals savaged by the Israeli government for outspoken criticism.
Persecution of Palestinian citizens recalls S. Africa apartheid repression
Electronic Intifada: 19 May 2010 – Two weeks after Israel imposed a travel ban on him, Ameer Makhoul, a well-respected Palestinian leader holding Israeli citizenship, was kidnapped from his home on 6 May in the middle of the night. The persecution of Makhoul brings back memories of the South Africa apartheid regime; during the South Africa anti-apartheid movement, similar tactics were used against those advocating for freedom and equal rights, who were accused of terrorism and having links with the Soviet Union. Adri Nieuwhof and Bangani Ngeleza comment for The Electronic Intifada.
breaking the isolation
In Gaza: 19 May 2010 – * photo: Emad Badwan IPS “I’ve learned most of what I know about photo editing and graphic design via the Internet,” says Emad, 27-year-old film-maker and editor. In Gaza, this sort of thing has become usual in a different way. “This programme isn’t available here,” he says, smiling triumphantly as he finishes downloading the latest edition of an advanced video editing programme. “Even if it was, I can’t afford to pay 600 dollars for it, not even if I worked for two months. But I need this for my work, so I looked for a free online version.” Isolated under a siege which began shortly after Hamas was elected in 2006 and heightened severely in mid-2007, Palestinians in Gaza have suffered the effects of such alienation in all aspects of their lives. The economy has been destroyed both by the prolonged and choking siege and the 2008-2009 Israeli war on…
Al-Walaja village is gradually disappearing
Palestine Monitor: 19 May 2010 – Al-Walaja village, south of Bethlehem, is gradually disappearing. In 1967, approximately half of it was annexed by Israel and absorbed into the Jerusalem municipality. This hillside village lies nearby the Israeli Jewish settlement of Gilo. The settlement is expanding and Israeli authorities are seizing more land. According to a military confiscation order handed to the villagers, the path of the Apartheid Wall will stretch over 4,890 meters between Beit Jala and al-Wallaja, affecting 35 families, whose homes may now be slated for demolition. Palestine Monitor visited the village during one of the protests organised by the local residents. Last Thursday a group of Palestinian, Israeli and international activists marched on the construction site of the Wall. They succeeded in temporarily stopping the bulldozers. However, security guards and Israeli border police eventually arrived on the scene and violently removed the protestors. There were four arrests. All pictures by Julian.
Charting The Road To Middle East Peace
Palestine Monitor: 19 May 2010 – In 2003, the Bush administration proclaimed that attacking Iraq would usher in an era of democracy in the Middle East. Yet after years of “birth pangs” leading up to what was supposed to be a new and improved Middle East, it is clear that the whole notion was inaccurate and destructive, both to the U.S. and the region itself. Today, however, there does exist a plausible way to advance peace, democracy, and prosperity in the Middle East; and one that does not involve fighting protracted wars in the Muslim world: Solve the Palestine Question. The real catalyst for peace and democracy in the region is not to be found on the rocky road through Tehran or Baghdad, but rather on the road through Jerusalem. Were the U.S. to once and for all apply its full weight on Palestine-Israel, peace in the region as a whole would become more attainable. It’s…
Israel’s Exclusion and Restriction of Goods to Gaza
Palestine Chronicle: 19 May 2010 – By Stephen Lendman After Hamas was overwhelmingly elected in January 2006, Israel, Washington and the West ended all outside aid, imposed an economic embargo and sanctions, and politically isolated the new government. Stepped up repression followed, including regular IDF incursions, bombings, killings, targeted assassinations, arrests, property destruction, and Israeli-instigated internal conflict that left Fatah usurping authority in the West Bank, leaving Gaza alone under Hamas. In June 2007, conditions worsened after Israel imposed its siege, medieval-like, according to some, for its harshness. Now, nearing its third anniversary, it’s still in place, slowly suffocating and strangling 1.5 million people, trapped by closed borders, regular incursions and attacks, and shortages of everything needed to function and survive. A humanitarian crisis resulted and continues. The West and most regional states are culpable, complicit or indifferent to a real time catastrophe. Arab Funding Could Be a Game Changer
Palestine Chronicle: 19 May 2010 – By George S. Hishmeh – Washington The Israeli narrative, thanks to Israel’s wealthy and well-connected supporters and the many politicians who, in turn, are desperately in need of their financial backing and votes, is prevalent in the West, especially in the United States. This is evident daily – in the halls of U.S. Congress, the American media and at mushrooming think-tanks in key cities, particularly Washington, and, needless to say, among some senior U.S. officials who are sensitive to their pull. In the U.S. media, for example, the country’s two leading dailies have correspondents in Israel, one of them an Israeli citizen and the other has a son serving in the Israeli army. The tendency is for them to sometimes disregard the facts and use the term “disputed” rather than “occupied” areas when reporting on clashes between Arabs and Israelis inside Arab East Jerusalem. Israel had illegally annexed the Arab…more
