West Bank city of Hebron could be powder keg as Mideast peace talks begin
LA Times 2 Sep 2010 – Hebron, home to more than 150,000 Palestinians and 400 Jewish settlers, is often at the center of the storm, and it is once again. Residents are bracing themselves and warn violence could spread. The fate of the U.S.-sponsored peace talks launched Thursday in Washington could hinge in part on how things play out in this hotly disputed West Bank city, where extremists on opposite sides suddenly find they share a common purpose: to sabotage the process.

Erekat ‘apology’ sparks controversy

No equivalent program targeting Palestinian audience
Videos of Palestinian leaders asking the Israeli public to join them as “partners for peace” were coordinated and co-implemented by the Palestinian arm of the Geneva Initiative, the organization’s director confirmed.
The first phase in a mass-media campaign – funded by USAID – “aims to counter the myth that there is no partner on the Palestinian side,” director of the Israeli branch Gadi Baltiansky explained.
Three clips were released on Israeli TV on Sunday featuring Palestinian members of the peace delegation to Washington, each declaring themselves a “partner for peace.”
“Shalom to you in Israel, I know we have disappointed you, I know we have been unable to deliver peace for the last 19 years,” chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat says in his short appearance, while Yasser Abed Rabbo warns of the “dangers for both of us” if talks fail.
Speaking in Hebrew, Jabril Raboub told Israelis that there was a “historic chance” to make peace, and Palestinians have a strong president and prime minister who are willing to make peace. “I think there is a good chance, and this is the time to go forward,” he said.
The clips stirred controversy among Palestinians, and hundreds rallied in Ramallah on Wednesday protesting peace talks they said were not representative of the Palestinian public because they lacked terms, references and guarantees that Israel would stick to its promises. more.. e-mail
Interviewing Michael Neumann
Edward Lewis, CounterPunch8/27/2010
Israel / Palestine: What Really Matters and What Doesn’t
Michael Neumann is a Professor of Philosophy at Trent University, Canada. He has long been a trenchant critic of Israeli policy towards the Palestinians, and has written extensively on the topic for CounterPunch, notably his book, “The Case Against Israel”.
Lewis: You are critical of the principle of national self-determination — that every nation should be able to form an independent political community. Yet this idea is one of the major moral foundations on which support for Palestinian statehood is based. Why are you opposed to the idea of national self-determination? On what alternative grounds do you support Palestinian claims to a state of their own? Neumann: “Every nation should be able to form an independent political community”? – that contains a fateful ambiguity.
If ‘nation’ means ‘whoever happens to be living in some country-sized geographical area’ – see your second question, about boundaries – then I’m not against the principle. I tepidly support it. Yes, political power should ultimately reside in the hands of ‘the people’ – another fatefully ambiguous expression – meaning everyone residing in that area. That alone would be enough to make some sort of case for a Palestinian state – hell, these folks were living there. At the very least, everyone residing in Palestine should have the power of the state that rules it. And at the very least, that justifies either a bi-national, one-state or a two-state solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict.
The case is not air-tight because not every act of self-determination is legitimate. If you – an individual or a nation – are free, and determine your own future, you might do so for good or for evil. You might even do irreparable harm to yourself…. more.. e-mail
How to Kill Goyim and Influence People: Israeli Rabbis Defend Book’s Shocking Religious Defense of Killing Non-Jews (with Video)
Max Blumenthal, AlterNet8/30/2010
A rabbinical guidebook for killing non-Jews has sparked an uproar in Israel and exposed the power a bunch of genocidal theocrats wield over the government.
When I went into the Jewish religious book emporium, Pomeranz, in central Jerusalem to inquire about the availability of a book called Torat Ha’Melech, or the King’s Torah, a commotion immediately ensued. “Are you sure you want it?” the owner, M. Pomeranz, asked me half-jokingly. “The Shabak [Israel’s internal security service] is going to want a word with you if you do.” As customers stopped browsing and began to stare in my direction, Pomeranz pointed to a security camera affixed to a wall. “See that?” he told me. “It goes straight to the Shabak!”
As soon as it was published late last year,Torat Ha’Melech sparked a national uproar. The controversy began when an Israeli tabloid panned the book’s contents as “230 pages on the laws concerning the killing of non-Jews, a kind of guidebook for anyone who ponders the question of if and when it is permissible to take the life of a non-Jew.” According to the book’s author, Rabbi Yitzhak Shapira, “Non-Jews are “uncompassionate by nature” and should be killed in order to “curb their evil inclinations.” “If we kill a gentile who has has violated one of the seven commandments… there is nothing wrong with the murder,” Shapira insisted. Citing Jewish law as his source (or at least a very selective interpretation of it) he declared: “There is justification for killing babies if it is clear that they will grow up to harm us, and in such a situation they may be harmed deliberately, and not only during combat with adults.”
In January, Shapira was briefly detained by the Israeli police, while two leading rabbis who endorsed the book, Dov Lior and Yaakov Yosef, were summoned to interrogations by the Shabak. However, the rabbis refused to appear at the interrogations, essentially thumbing their noses at the state and its laws…. more.. e-mail
Why Israel imprisoned my best friend
Electronic Intifada: 2 Sep 2010 – And just as Israel has gradually increased restrictions of where we can go, the boundaries of what is permissible to do as a Palestinian have narrowed markedly. Palestinians protest the PA cabinet’s announcement of an “indefinite” delay in municipal elections
Palestine Monitor: 2 Sep 2010 – What happened in Hebron proved our point; we need a unified Palestinian position,” Palestinian National Initiative leader Mustafa Barghouthi said following a mass rally in Ramallah on Wednesday. The protest, planned immediately after PA forces quashed a news conference on 25 August, was coordinated by leftist Palestinian factions, independent parties and several prominent philanthropists and business people involved with recent attempts to restore unity. The parties demonstrated against the return to peace talks under the conditions set out by Israel. “There were no conditions set out for the success of these talks,” Barghouthi said. “There were no terms of reference and Israel has been given a veto.” Barghouthi explained that in going forward with direct talks without guarantees, like a promised halt to settlement construction in the West Bank, the Palestinian government was going in without the confidence of the Palestinian people and without their support. “These talks will fail,…more
Behind the Israeli Wall: A Lesson in Reality
Palestine Chronicle: 2 Sep 2010 – By Ramzy Baroud Writers often romanticize their subjects. At times they even manipulate their readers. A book – or any piece of writing for that matter — is meant to provide a sense of completion. Sociological explanations are offered to offset the confusion caused by apparent inconsistency in human behavior. At times a reader is asked to take a stance, or choose sides. This is especially true in writings which deal with compelling human experiences. In Behind the Wall: Life, Love and Struggle in Palestine (Potomac Books, 2010), Rich Wiles undoubtedly directs his readers, although implicitly, towards taking a stance. But he is unabashed about his moral priorities and makes no attempt to disguise his objectives. As I began reading Wiles’ book, various aspects struck me as utterly refreshing in contrast to the way Palestine is generally written about. We tend to complicate what was meant to be straightforward and…more
Palestinians, Christians and Politics of Compassion
Palestine Chronicle: 2 Sep 2010 – By Dallas Darling Even now as Presbyterian leaders prophetically issue statements calling for the U.S. to end its military aid to Israel unless Tel Aviv stops it settlement activities in occupied land that belongs to Palestinians, they might want to recall what Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer wrote in his book “The Politics of Compassion.” Nelson-Pallmeyer believed that most Christians and denominations in the U.S.-who by virtue of their affluence, power, privilege, and isolation-are not only entirely separated from the true biblical message, but isolated from the people in whom that message is most clearly embodied today. Clearly, it is the experiences of the poor and the oppressed, including their poverty, repression, forced migration, resistance, endurance, suffering, and hope, that better enables one to understand the Good News of salvation and liberation from unjust political, economic and social structures.(1) While discussing the Israeli occupation of Palestine, Christian delegates and members of the General…more
Moral Interventionism, Labour and Miliband
Palestine Chronicle: 2 Sep 2010 – By Gilad Atzmon — London Millions of ballot papers have been sent out yesterday to those eligible to vote in the Labour leadership election. Symbolically enough, this happened the day Tony Blair, the British PM who launched the criminal war in Iraq, published his controversial memoirs. I am not holding my breath for the Labour party to make the right decision. Clearly, the same party failed to curtail Blair’s militant enthusiasm, even when it was plainly clear that the argument for the Iraq war was grounded in a dodgy dossier. Considering the scale of the atrocities we are all complicit in thanks to the Labour government, it is my duty to remind the Labour party members who their leading candidate is, what he stands for and what interests he may serve. Labour Party members should consider the role allegedly played by its leaders and leading candidate David Miliband in what…more
Mitchell Hoping for a Quick-fix Fake Peace?
Dissident Voice: 2 Sep 2010 – On the eve of the silliest peace talks in history, the big question is this. What makes Obama’s envoy George Mitchell, a negotiator of high repute, say there is “no role” for Hamas? The talks are silly because they seek to overturn what the United Nations has already decided for resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict and drive a bulldozer through the building blocks of justice. It might be music to Zionist ears, but to people of good will it’s a cruel, futile and immensely damaging ploy. The talks are also silly because they bring together two people who by no stretch of the imagination could qualify as partners for peace. And they sit down under the auspices of a third party with an appalling track record in the Middle East and whom no-one trusts to act fairly. So Mitchell has been dealt a crap hand. The former US senator, we’re told,…more
