Cemetery dispute opens rare rift in Jerusalem
Maath Musleh, Ma’an News Agency 9/8/2012
ERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Palestinians fight fiercely to preserve the Arab identity of the occupied Jerusalem, their most sacred city. But they suffer from the occupation’s restrictions on Islamic cemeteries’ expansion in the city, targeting the dead as well as the alive.
In the Islamic cemeteries of Bab al-Rahmeh, Mamanullah (known as Mamilla to Israelis) and others, a fierce battle between Palestinians and the occupation is taking place. This battle is to protect the dead in their graves and the history on the cemeteries’ tombstones.
The Awqaf takes the lead in protecting the Islamic cemeteries through its Committee to Protect the Cemeteries. Amidst this battle against the occupation, the Awqaf has found itself dragged into a totally different battle. The battlefield here is the Bab al-Sahreh cemetery, also known as al-Mujahedin Islamic cemetery. Their opponents this time are their neighbors in the Garden Tomb of Jesus.
The Awqaf, according to an official with the Garden Tomb of Jesus, is expanding the reinforcement of a wall between it and the al-Mujahedin cemetery, but the new construction is still being built on the graveyard’s property.
The management of the Garden objects, but they say their only objection is based on the safety of the structure. The Awqaf claim this new construction is necessary for the expansion of new graves in the al-Mujahideen cemetery.
The al-Mujahedin Islamic cemetery is located just outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City, on Salah el-Din Street. It traces back to about a 1,000 years. To the west of the cemetery, the Garden Tomb was established under the rule of the Islamic Ottoman Empire in 1894 by a charitable trust based in the United Kingdom. more.. e-mail

AIPAC and the Undemocratic Convention
Sheldon Richman, CounterPunch 9/7/2012
      The Battle Over Jerusalem
We rarely get to see what we saw the other night at the Democratic National Convention. The party platform had been revised from previous years to remove an endorsement of an undivided Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. I haven’t seen an explanation of how that could have happened.
AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the leading organization of the pro-Israel Lobby) must have let down its guard, thinking all was safe and sound in the platform committee. Then it dawned on everyone that this bipartisan concession to Israel and the Lobby was nowhere to be seen in the party’s official statement of principles.
Oh horror! Something had to be done.
And something was done–something not exactly kosher.
An amendment to reinsert the Jerusalem language was proposed, requiring a two-thirds’ vote of the delegates on the floor. Convention chairman (and LA mayor) Antonio Villaraigosa called for a voice vote. It sounded even–there certainly were not two-thirds for the change. Villaraigosa said: “In the opinion of the–let me do that again.” He clearly looked embarrassed.
But the second voice vote had the same outcome! “I, um, I guess–” Villaraigosa stammered. At which point a woman official walked over to him and said, “You gotta let them do what they’re gonna do.”
So Villaraigosa said, “I’ll do that one more time.” If anything, the no’s outnumbered the yeas this time. Nevertheless, Villaraigosa declared, ”In the opinion of the chair, two-thirds voted in the affirmative. The motion is adopted, and the platform has been amended….”more.. e-mail

Israeli leaders score own goal over non-aligned summit in Iran
Uri Avnery, Redress 9/8/2012
Nothing could be more scary than the thought that this duo – Binyamin Netanyahu and Ehud Barak – is in a position to start a war, the dimensions and outcome of which are incalculable.
It’s scary not only because of their ideological fixations and mental outlook, but also because of the level of their intelligence.
The last month gave us a small sample. By itself it was but a passing episode. But as an illustration of their decision-making abilities, it was frightening enough.
The routine conference of the Movement of Non-Aligned Nations was to take place in Tehran. One hundred and twnty states promised to attend, many of them represented by their presidents or prime ministers”
This was bad news for the Israeli government, which has devoted much of its energies during the last three years to the strenuous effort to isolate Iran – while Iran was devoted to a no less strenuous effort to isolate Israel.
If the location of the conference was not bad enough, the United Nations secretary-general, Ban Ki-moon, announced that he would attend, too. And as if this was still not bad enough, the new president of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi, also promised to come.
Netanyahu was faced with a problem: how to react?
If a wise expert had been consulted, he might have asked: why react at all?
The Non-Aligned Movement is an empty shell. It was created 51 years ago, at the height of the Cold War, by Nehru of India, Tito of Yugoslavia, Sukarno of Indonesia and Abd-al-Nasser of Egypt. Dozens of nations joined. They wanted to steer a course between the American and the Soviet blocs. more.. e-mail

Lost between Fatah and Hamas
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Sep 2012 – By Mohammed S. AlNadi A new Hamas-only government was sworn in at the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza Sunday, with Ismail Haniyeh continuing as prime minister but with some cabinet reshuffling. A day earlier, Fatah had opened the registration for local elections in the West Bank. This news came in as no surprise to Palestinians who have already been in big doubts that any reconciliation will ever be reached. Such farcical unilateral moves are yet another round of the deliberate stall that only deepens the rift and further exposes the ill intentions and vindictive attitudes between both parties, and the deviation from working towards establishing a unified national front. They manifest how irresponsible the Palestinian “leadership” is, and how the interest of Palestinians is the last thing they would think about. Earlier this year, general elections had been scheduled to take place on October 23. However, this is not the…more

Palestine in Protest: Echoes of the Past
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Sep 2012 – By Patrick O. Strickland – Jaffa At first glance, it may appear that the demonstrations which alighted across the West Bank on 05 September were routine. Weekly demonstrations, sit-ins, marches, hunger strikes, and graffiti are only a small fraction of the vast reserve of strategic means of rebellion regularly employed by Palestinians. Indeed, the notion of resistance itself has been absorbed as an integral component of society. It is, after all, the 45th year of life under the coerced tutelage of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The demonstrators who flooded into streets across the occupied territories on Wednesday, however, did not deem Israel as the only barrier standing between them and self-determination. After years of vile corruption and inept incompetency, the Palestinian leadership is being called into question: neither armed struggle nor peace negotiations have achieved the long overdue liberation of millions of Palestinians living under military occupation or in…more

All Palestinian Elections to the PNC First
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Sep 2012 – By Uri Davis – Ramallah On more than one occasion has Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced before the FATAH Revolutionary Council his intention of holding comprehensive elections to all the national institution of our Palestinian people (namely, the Palestine National Council (PNC), the Palestinian Authority (PA) Legislative Council and Presidency and Municipal Elections) subject the successful conclusion of the FATAH-HAMAS conciliation. In the view of this writer, holding Palestinian elections in the said order (namely, PNC elections first, PA legislative Council and Presidency elections second, and Municipal Elections third, with or without the successful conclusion of the FATAH-HAMAS conciliation) is indeed one effective route out of the current protracted deadlock facing our Palestinian people consequent to apartheid Israel continuing undermining the “Oslo” brokered “Peace Process” over the past two odd decades in its attempts to deny the right of a State of Palestine to sovereignty in any part of the…more
