’I Am a Refugee’: Israel’s splashy new victimhood campaign
Larry Derfner, +972 Magazine 9/11/2012
Message: The Palestinian refugees have nothing on the ‘Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries.’
As if Israel hasn’t been playing the victim long enough, as if it hasn’t exploited the Six Million to the absolute limit, now comes a new weapon: the “Jewish Refugees from Arab Countries.” This has long been an Israeli answer to the Palestinian refugees – that roughly as many Middle Eastern Jews as Palestinians lost their homes because of the 1948 war. This week, though, the government made the issue a major new front in its information war. Fittingly, the head of the “I Am a Refugee” campaign is Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, whose personality and politics were best conveyed a couple of years ago when he sat the Turkish ambassador to Israel on a much lower chair than his own, directing the Israeli photographers to emphasize the relationship of superior to inferior.
Ayalon and the movement had a big conference in Jerusalem yesterday, the World Jewish Congress was a co-sponsor, and Prime Minister Netanyahu sent along a supportive video. What’s more, according to Haaretz, “Israeli diplomats and representatives abroad have been instructed to raise the issue of Jewish refugees from Arab countries at every relevant forum.” And when Ayalon goes to New York in a couple of weeks, he “intends to call on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to include the issue on the international organization’s agenda.” This is all “part of a new international campaign to create parity between the plight of Jewish and Palestinian refugees…”
Actually, the campaign is going for more than parity – it’s going for superiority. It’s staking the claim that the Jews who left Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, Egypt and other Arab countries were bigger victims than the Palestinian refugees.
So, all you goyim out there, don’t you dare shed a tear for the Palestinian refugees until you first shed several tears for us…. more..e-mail

Forget Iran, it’s Israel’s nuclear gun pointed at Obama’s head
Jonathan Cook in Nazareth, Redress 9/11/2012
The myth of the US-Israel special bond
It is possibly the greatest of American political myths, repeated ad nauseam by presidential candidates in their election campaigns. President Barack Obama has claimed that the United States enjoys a special bond with Israel unlike its relations with any other country. He has called the friendship “unshakeable”, “enduring” and “unique”, “anchored by our common interests and deeply held values”.
His Republican rival, Mitt Romney, has gone further, arguing that there is not “an inch of difference between ourselves and our ally Israel”. A recent Romney election advertisemnet, highlighting his summer visit to Israel, extolled the “deep and cherished relationship”.
But, while such pronouncements form the basis of an apparent Washington consensus, the reality is that the cherished friendship is no more than a fairy tale. It has been propagated by politicians to mask the suspicion – and plentiful examples of duplicity and betrayal – that have marked the relationship since Israel’s founding.
Politicians may prefer to express undying love for Israel, and hand over billions of dollars annually in aid, but the US security establishment has – at least, in private – always regarded Israel as an unfaithful partner.
The distrust has been particularly hard to hide in relation to Iran. Israel has been putting relentless pressure on Washington, apparently in the hope of manoeuvring it into supporting or joining an attack on Tehran to stop what Israel claims is an Iranian effort to build a nuclear bomb concealed beneath its civilian energy programme. more.. e-mail

How We Became Israel
Andrew J. Bacevich,  9/10/2012
Peace means dominion for Netanyahu—and now for us.
Peace means different things to different governments and different countries. To some it suggests harmony based on tolerance and mutual respect. To others it serves as a euphemism for dominance, peace defining the relationship between the strong and the supine.
In the absence of actually existing peace, a nation’s reigning definition of peace shapes its proclivity to use force. A nation committed to peace-as-harmony will tend to employ force as a last resort. The United States once subscribed to this view. Or beyond the confines of the Western Hemisphere, it at least pretended to do so.
A nation seeking peace-as-dominion will use force more freely. This has long been an Israeli predilection. Since the end of the Cold War and especially since 9/11, however, it has become America’s as well. As a consequence, U.S. national-security policy increasingly conforms to patterns of behavior pioneered by the Jewish state. This “Israelification” of U.S. policy may prove beneficial for Israel. Based on the available evidence, it’s not likely to be good for the United States.
Here is Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing what he calls his “vision of peace” in June 2009: “If we get a guarantee of demilitarization … we are ready to agree to a real peace agreement, a demilitarized Palestinian state side by side with the Jewish state.” The inhabitants of Gaza and the West Bank, if armed and sufficiently angry, can certainly annoy Israel. But they cannot destroy it or do it serious harm. By any measure, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) wield vastly greater power than the Palestinians can possibly muster. Still, from Netanyahu’s perspective, “real peace” becomes possible only if Palestinians guarantee that their putative state will forego even the most meager military capabilities. Your side disarms, our side stays armed to the teeth: that’s Netanyahu’s vision of peace in a nutshell. more.. e-mail

Humanitarian Disaster at Sea – Little Girl with Green Jacket
Palestine Chronicle: 11 Sep 2012 – By Ramzy Baroud Has the sea always been so cruel? The little girl was dressed in blue pants and a green jacket. Her hair was finely kempt in a ponytail, probably interwoven by her mother. Thursday was meant to be a special day for her, a fact that was highlighted by the carefully chosen details of her outfit — matching green socks and green jacket, white tennis shoes with dark blue stars painted on the sides. But on that day itself, the little Palestinian girl sunk to her death, along with her family and many others. A rickety boat filled with numerous people, including entire families, sunk merely a hundred metres off the Turkish western Aegean coast last Thursday. It was reported that women and children were kept at the bottom of the boat. When the overcrowded vessel hit the rocks and began sinking, many swam to shore. The most…more

The Tank Man and Rachel Corrie
Palestine Chronicle: 11 Sep 2012 – By Dan Lieberman The court decision in Israel, which exonerated the driver of a huge bulldozer in the death of activist Rachel Corrie, recalls a previous confrontation between man and machine – the 1989 stance of a Chinese citizen before a tank squadron moving toward Tiananmen Square. Chronologically and physically displaced, these two events have similar characteristics – one person preventing mayhem by standing firm before those who are prepared to cause violence against others – identical beginnings, different endings – one ending with a smile and relief; the other ending with declamation and grief. Comparing the two events demonstrates how conjecture becomes a historical fact and then is periodically resurrected to direct thoughts in a specific direction and how history, which should educate, is purposely ignored. Start with the famous “tank man.” What do we know about him? The answer is nothing, absolutely nothing. The well-dressed hero, holding a…more

Israel, Canada Cut from Same Cloth
Palestine Chronicle: 11 Sep 2012 – By Ismail Salami – Tehran Canada’s abrupt move to sever all ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran manifestly springs from a strong Zionist sway which has permeated the political structure of the country. Naturally, the Israelis were tremendously gladdened by this move which they saw as a ‘clarion call to action’. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the move with incredible promptitude as if he knew this act of servitude to the Zionist entity was sure to materialize and expressed hope that other countries would follow the example set by Ottawa. “We have to build a wall, not of silence, but of condemnation and resolve. Canada just put a very big brick in that wall that is necessary for the peace of the world,” he said. The brick Ottawa built within the shaky wall of Zionism will remain forever as a black stain in the brief history of Canada….more
