Settlements
Abdul Hussein Shaaban, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 9/13/2012
Three basic issues have been worrying Israel since its creation in May 1948; they are inseparable.
The first relates to the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland and be compensated for damage and disadvantage. That right is both collective and individual, and is inalienable, unable to be waived, denied or negotiated away.
The second relates to settlement building, which has a divisive and racist dimension, in law and practice. Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, are illegal in international laws, conventions and treaties, in particular the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and its annexes of 1977.
Both issues are linked inextricably with the third: the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and an independent and viable state. The state announced by the Palestinian National Council in Algiers in 1988 was in line with the legitimate right represented by self-determination, freedom and independence, on the basis of the Charter of the United Nations and the International Declaration for the liquidation of colonialism, no. 1514 of 1960.
The problems of establishing the state and securing the right of return while bringing an end to illegal settlements – in short, returning to UN resolutions 181, 242 and 338 among others represent the essence of Palestinian rights. At the same time, they signal the beginning of the end for the State of Israel’s ongoing expansionist policies manifested in its settlement programme.
If the issue of an independent Palestinian state capable of living like other countries is a cause of concern for Israel, then East Jerusalem as the capital is most disturbing to the Zionist project…. more.. e-mail
PA vows to hold elections
Khaled Amayreh in Ramallah, Al-Ahram Weekly 9/6/2012
Local elections are on the cards, but Hamas continues to protest that it has no freedom to campaign in the West Bank.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is planning to hold local elections in the West Bank in mid-October despite Hamas’s refusal to do likewise in the Gaza Strip.
The Fatah-dominated PA views elections as the ultimate arbiter between itself and Islamist Hamas, which is in control of the Gaza Strip. Hamas views elections as the would-be fruit of national reconciliation with Fatah.
Despite several agreements and understandings reached through active Arab — especially Egyptian — mediation, the two main Palestinian political groups have failed to reach a solid final agreement that would end more than five years of tension, starting soon after Hamas defeated Fatah in the 2006 general elections.
With a supposedly large chunk of eligible Palestinian voters set to boycott the upcoming elections, it is expected that the turnout will be modest, which would allow Hamas to further question the credibility of the elections under current circumstances.
Most of the municipal and local councils in the West Bank are already controlled by Fatah following the sacking of pro-Hamas councils and mayors in the context of the oft-bitter hostility between the two groups.
In many cities and localities, the PA has been refusing to organise elections, fearing Islamists would win the polls.
However, with Hamas substantially weakened in the West Bank due to a combined repression campaign by the PA security agencies and the Israeli occupation army, which saw most Hamas’s community leaders and members of parliament thrown behind bars, the PA seems fairly encouraged to hold the elections. more.. e-mail
Peace treaty must be revised
Galal Nassar, Al-Ahram Weekly 9/6/2012
Insecurity in Sinai could engulf the whole country, already teetering following the revolution. Egypt must act, which means first untying its hands.
Egypt is in a state of disarray. In spite of the great Egyptian grassroots revolution, anarchy remained the primary trait of the transitional period, regardless of the degree to which it was fed by political developments, constitutional and legal controversies, and major and minor events in the capital, up and down the Nile from Alexandria to Aswan, and along the fringes of the country, in Sinai, Al-Wadi Al-Gadid and Marsa Matrouh. The chaos, aggravated by mounting polarisations between the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), the Muslim Brotherhood, and other political forces, has persisted in spite of the election of a new president. But more than any other locus of tension in the country, the current conflict in Sinai epitomises the crisis of the erosion of central control, security breakdown, and their socio-political and strategic ramifications. The recent events in Sinai, which were triggered by the terrorist attack that killed 16 Egyptian soldiers, cast to the fore numerous crucial domestic and foreign policy questions not least of which are the security of Sinai and Egyptian-Israeli relations.
The situation in Sinai had already begun to deteriorate well before the January Revolution. This was largely due to two factors. The first was the security agencies’ mismanagement of a series of difficulties and crises in that area, generating a growing gap between the people of Sinai and the central government. On one side, some entertained doubts as to the patriotism of the Sinai Bedouin in spite of the fact that they bore the burden of the resistance against the Israeli occupation of Sinai following the 1967 war. On the other was mounting resentment against a regime that ignored the developmental needs of Sinai, failed to open job opportunities to Sinai youth in tourist projects that proliferated after control over the area was restored to Egypt, and did not recruit them into military academies as a means to assimilate Sinai’s society into national structures. The second factor was the spread of extremist thought in a religious guise during the Sadat and Mubarak eras. Almost intrinsically hostile to many domestic and foreign policy orientations, that type of thought inevitably spread to Sinai. more.. e-mail

Sinister September: Zionist Anti-Islam Plot Simmering
Palestine Chronicle: 13 Sep 2012 – By Ismail Salami – Tehran The month of September has witnessed an accelerated trend of coordinated attempts to desecrate Islam and tarnish the image of the Muslims across the globe. That a blasphemous movie desecrating the person of the holy Prophet of Islam has been released in the United States simultaneously with the 9/11 tragic incident cannot be looked upon as sheer coincidence. In a coordinated effort, UK channel 4 broadcast a documentary called ‘Islam: The Untold Story’ last week in stark distortion of Islam. Director Tom Holland who is so dismally bereft of any knowledge on Islam claims there is little written contemporary evidence about the origin of Islam and the life of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). Even barely noted for his vampire and supernatural stories, Holland’s non-fiction books have nothing to do with religious matters or Islam. In the documentary, he has included Patricia Crone, an infamous pseudo-scholar affiliated…more
The Pope and the Palestinians
Palestine Chronicle: 13 Sep 2012 – By Franklin Lamb – Shatila Refugee Camp, Lebanon The only time this observer recalls Yassir Arafat ever becoming frustrated with the late American journalist Janet Stevens, whom he adored as a daughter, was during a visit in August of 1982 when the PLO leader, mentioned in conversation, as he often did to others, that Jesus Christ was a Palestinian. Arafat, a devout Muslim, was proud of that fact. On that particular night, Janet was exhausted, as many under siege in West Beirut were, from more than 11 hours of Israeli bombing and she had other things on her mind. Most pressing was a sick child in Burj al Baranjeh refugee camp who needed to be taken to Europe for a lifesaving operation without delay. Janet asked, well, truth is told, she essentially instructed the PLO leader to arrange the evacuation of the child and even mentioned a specific European country…more
21st Century Robotic Wars
Palestine Chronicle: 13 Sep 2012 – By Jamal Kanj On the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a new ‘sanitized war’ is reshaping the future of America’s military industrial complex. The drones, or the new robotic war, is operated by a galaxy of military bases stretching from the Creech Air Force Base in the desert of Nevada, traversing through CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, before landing on new desert airstrips in the Middle East. The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles’ main mission is tracking and targeted killing of alleged terrorists. Earlier this month, a drone using the newly introduced, more accurate Small Smart Weapon or Scorpion missile, delivered a direct hit, by mistake, killing 13 family members near the town of Rada, Yemen. Following the raid, Yemeni activist Nasr Abdulla said: “I would not be surprised if a hundred tribesmen joined the lines of Al Qaeda… This part of Yemen takes revenge very seriously.” Last May, a…more
