Let Netanyahu put his money where his mouth is
Dr. Daud Abdullah, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 9/13/2012
Efforts by Western politicians to help Benjamin Netanyahu climb down from his high horse are not working. He is outraged because they have refused to fix “red lines” for Iran. In the worst case scenario, the upshot of his threats will be a regional war. And it would be a costly. Before the bombing even starts, Western taxpayers must ask themselves who will foot the bill.
Few may question Israel’s military capability to launch an attack; however, many doubt its financial ability to sustain a protracted war. The global recession did not exempt the Israeli economy from its ravages. A high cost of living, especially for food, housing and fuel, has exposed deep social and economic fault lines. Last year, hundreds of thousands marched in Tel Aviv in protest at the government’s economic policies. There has been no improvement in their condition; in fact, all of the signs suggest that it is actually getting worse.
In July this year, at least two Israelis died after self-immolation protests. One of them, Akiva Mafa’i, was a former soldier. Casualties from Netanyahu’s deranged war cannot expect better treatment.
Already, Israel’s incumbent coalition government has been late in submitting its budget for 2013; it was due in the first half of August. Analysts believe that the Prime Minister is fearful of the hostile backlash it will provoke. Israelis are bracing themselves for sweeping austerity measures that will involve price rises and cuts to social security and welfare benefits.
According to the OECD’s definition of poverty, Israel, in 2010, had the second highest rate of poverty among families in its member countries. There were 433,300 poor families in the country (20 per cent of all families). Similarly, a 2010 National Insurance Institute report found that 19 per cent of Israeli families experienced some form of food insecurity. more.. e-mail

Who’s Got the Nukes?
William Greider, The Nation 9/12/2012
Israel’s prime minister is provoking another political dust storm over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, but US news stories once again fail to mention awkward facts that are the true linchpin for this threatening crisis. Israel itself already has the Bomb. It developed its own nuclear weapons several decades ago, but has never officially admitted as much. And unlike other nuclear powers, Israel has never signed anti-proliferation treaties, nor has it submitted its nuclear arsenal to regular inspections by international authorities.
Everyone knows this, at least the government officials on all sides do. Yet there seems to be a media taboo against sharing the information with the American public. Americans have a huge and dangerous stake in the matter. If things go wrong and Israel launches a pre-emptive unilateral strike against Iran, it would probably provoke retaliatory war-making by Iran. Like it or not, the United States could be pulled into yet another war in the Middle East to defend our ally. Shouldn’t people hear the whole story before the shooting starts?
Don’t take my word on this. Check out newspaper accounts in which Israeli officials complain that the United States has not been tough enough with Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blisters President Obama for failing to draw a bright “red line” against Iran’s efforts to develop a Bomb of its own. Netanyahu even accuses of Washington of “moral” failure for not standing up to the mullahs. His patrons in the Republican Party are grateful for the political intrusion.
But why does the press routinely ignore Israel’s nukes and its obvious military superiority? Perhaps because that would complicate and weaken Israel’s moral claims of self-defense. Furthermore, it could help explain why Iran might be eager to join the exclusive club of nuclear nations. Iran might say—if it ever told the truth about its motivations—that it is the nation in need of self-protection. more.. e-mail

Testimonies: Israelis tear-gassed pleading asylum seekers, dragged them to Egypt
Dimi Reider, +972 Magazine 9/13/2012
Contrary to Israeli statements suggesting that 18 starved Eritrean agreed to go back to Egypt, the survivors tell lawyers their comrades were forcibly dragged away from the fence, despite begging to be killed rather than returned to Egypt. The refugees reported they were previously tear gassed, pushed away with metal rods and denied food. The Egyptian soldiers near the border told the group that the men were unwanted but they would take the women of the group and rape them, in addition to the two they were raping already.
The following are excerpts from testimonies given by two women and a teen, the only known survivors of the group of 20 Eritrean asylum seekers who were stuck and starved between fences on the Israeli-Egyptian border last week. After finding out the fence and the refugees were on Israeli territory, the Supreme Court allowed the state a few day’s leave to resolve the situation. (Noa posted an excellent breakdown of the court’s politics soon after the (in)decision.) The army then announced the women and teen would be taken into Israel (and jailed for a minimum of three years under the “Prevention of Infiltration” Law, which essentially criminalises asylum-seeking in Israel.)
Israeli officials suggested to the press that the 18 men weren’t interested in asylum, only in work, and suggested that they “agreed” to turn themselves over to the Egyptian army. The affidavits of the three detainees, taken separately at the Saharonim detention compound and released to +972 by “We Are Refugees” attorneys, tell a very different story. The fate of the 18 men forcibly returned to the Egyptians remains unknown, and the Prime Minister’s Office has been denying request for comments on their situation and whereabouts.
“…And then they moved us to the Israeli-Egyptian border, we stayed there for eight days, the hunger and thirst were horrible, the Israelis shot gas at us twice, they shoved a long iron rod through the fence and tried pushing us away….” more.. e-mail

Palestine’s Paralympians: Without Medals, With Pride
In Gaza: 14 Sep 2012 – *Mohammed Fanouna is welcomed back proudly at the Rafah crossing after the Paralympics. RAFAH, Gaza, Sep 14 2012 (IPS) – By Eva Bartlett The car’s engine revs, wheels spinning in vain, as it sinks deeper into the sandy lane near Rafah, southern Gaza. Members of the Palestinian Paralympic Committee (PPC) are en route to welcome Palestine’s two Paralympic contenders, Mohammed Fanouna and Khamis Zaqut, home from the 2012 London Paralympic Games. Zaqut and Fanouna, both repeat medal winners in prior Paralympic, Arab, and Asian Games, came fourth and ninth respectively in their events in London 2012. According to Ala’a Shatali, general secretary of the PPC, the two Olympians should be proud of their ranking in light of the various obstacles facing athletes in Gaza. “We don’t have adequate training facilities or equipment in Gaza,” he says. “But our athletes are extremely motivated, and try to overcome the lack of opportunities.”…more
