Activist dares imagine a one-state solution
Patrick Cooke, The Times of Malta 4/1/2013
“It is a deliberate policy of ethnic cleansing”
The snow that fell on the West Bank village of Urif on January 10 was the heaviest in years, enticing delighted children out of their homes.
But snow was not the only thing to descend on the village that morning.
As the children threw snowballs, dozens of Israeli settlers came down from the hilltop settlement of Yizhar, brandishing guns, stones and even a sword.
What happened next was witnessed by Maltese activist Andre Callus, 26, who was in the Nablus region with the International Solidarity Movement, a non-violent group “committed to resisting the Israeli apartheid in Palestine”.
He showed The Times a video of the clashes in the village that day, filmed by the ISM.
A Palestinian can be seen lying on the ground, shot and injured by a live bullet fired by settlers or the Israel Defence Forces that protect them.
Members of the army can later be seen throwing a sound bomb to disperse international activists who appeared to be asking them to keep the settlers away from the village.
“This was an almost daily occurrence in Urif; sometimes settlers’ attacks would happen three times a day,” Mr Callus said. — See also: Source: The Times of Malta more.. e-mail
Israel ‘tried to banish me for 28 years,’ says hunger striker Ayman Sharawna
Joe Catron, Gaza City, Electronic Intifada 3/25/2013
Ayman Sharawna needed the help of two friends, one supporting him on each side, to walk into the living room of his new apartment overlooking the Gaza seaport on Saturday. But if the physical effects of his eight-month hunger strike were visible, Sharawna projected an air of victory when he spoke with activists who had gathered to welcome him.
“My hunger strike secured two things,” he said. “First, it won my release, my freedom. Second, it prevented the arrest of other prisoners who were released in the Shalit deal [the prisoner exchange in October 2011].”
Sharawna’s hunger strike ended on 17 March with an agreement in which Israel banished him to Gaza from his home in the West Bank city of Hebron for 10 years.
A statement by Gaza’s Palestinian Centre for Human Rights called his forcible relocation “a form of collective punishment and reprisals prohibited under the Fourth Geneva Convention” (“PCHR condemns Ayman al-Sharawna’s deportation to Gaza by Israeli forces,” 18 March 2013).
Sharawna’s hunger strike was a matter of collective defense as much as securing his personal liberty, he said. “The occupation forces threatened, the night they arrested me, to arrest all Hamas prisoners who were released in the Shalit exchange. But my hunger strike stopped that.”

Stand With Us poster sends truly universal message – accidentally
Noam Sheizaf, +972 Magazine 3/30/2013
Controversial poster juxtaposes Holocaust survivors with IDF soldiers. The only thing is, the Nazis’ victims in the picture are probably not Jewish.
Ami Kaufman reported here on a tasteless Stand With Us poster, politicizing the memory of the Holocaust in order to support Israeli policy and the IDF. Here is the poster, and I urge you to read Ami, who makes all the important points. (UPDATE: Stand With Us took the picture off their Facebook wall)
I, however, want to bring attention to an interesting fact (pointed out by a commentator on the Stand With Us Facebook page): the survivors in the poster are probably not Jews. They have single, not double triangles on their shirts, which means that they could be political prisoners, or those deemed criminals by the Nazis (from homosexuals to the mentally ill). Check out the Wikipedia entry on Nazi concentration camp badges for more details.
The original picture was taken in Buchenwald, Germany – a camp known for the diverse group of prisoners who were sent to it – Jews, Gypsies, political prisoners, Soviet soldiers and many more. Actually, this very same picture is used in another article to illustrate the Nazi classification system.
Chances are, therefore, that those prisoners in the picture are not Jews, which transforms the Stand With Us poster into something completely different. The image takes a life of its own, and without taking anything away from the memory of the Jewish tragedy, it leaves us with a humanistic and universal lesson: not just that the Holocaust should never happen to us again, but rather that this should never happen to anyone. — See also: Tasteless montage: Pro-Israel group puts IDF soldiers in line with Nazi camp inmates more.. e-mail
The Unheard Voices of Palestinians
Alan Wieder, CounterPunch 3/22/2013
David Grossman’s “The Yellow Wind” Revisited
David Grossman did the interviews for his book, The Yellow Wind, in May 1987, six months before the first Intifada. Not
only did the book show that particular decade’s oppressive reality of Israel toward Palestine, it illustrated the causes of that Intifada, and sadly, the one that followed and those that will come because of Israel’s continuing oppression that is now wed with expanding settlements on Palestinian land in what is at the very least the closest, present parallel to the Bantustan states in apartheid South Africa.
Although somewhat confounding, Grossman did not himself define Israel as the oppressor and Palestine as the oppressed. “Defining Israel’s position as wrong in principle and the Palestinian position as entirely righteous, is simplistic and false,” he said. Grossman’s book is compelling, however, because he relies on the voices of “ordinary” Palestinians and Israelis, not politicians or officials, living in the West Bank at the time. And the people that he spoke with clearly do signify – the oppressor and the oppressed.
“The fact is that when I wrote the book I had no intention of suggesting a solution. I am a writer not a politician, and the writer’s job, I believe, is to put a finger on the wound, to write anew, in a language that the reader has not yet learned to insulate himself against, about the intricacies of the existing situation, to shatter stereotypes that make it easy not to deal with the problems. The writer’s job is to remind those who have forgotten that humanity and morality are still important questions and to warn of the future implied by the present.” (Intro/NP)
Traveling for seven weeks in the West Bank, Grossman spoke to Palestinians and Israelis. He met shopkeepers, soldiers, farmers, widows, children, oppressors, victims, and more. For the purpose of this review, we will re-visit the words of some of the Palestinians whom Grossman portrays in the book….more.. e-mail

Suffocating Under Siege, Gaza Welcomes Tourism
In Gaza: 2 Apr 2013 – First Published at Inter Press Services –by Eva Bartlett (IPS) – “We wanted to help foreigners in Gaza, so we created an English map of Gaza City,” says Amir Shurrab, one of the minds behind the foldable Gaza Tourist Map. At the time a lecturer for the University College of Applied Sciences (UCAS), Shurrab led a team of Geographic Information System (GIS) professionals and students in mapping Gaza City street by street in 2009. “GIS drawing is usually aided by satellites, but the Israeli occupation authorities prevented us from using the nearest satellite,” says Shurrab. “So we used one further away. “We also wanted to share Gaza’s beauty and culture, to show a different face from what is seen in the media,” says Shurrab, referring to the images of Palestinians maimed and killed by Israeli bombings and shootings. The map, also available on the Internet , is a cheery rendition of…more
