US peace brokers – ‘neutral’ in favour of Israel
Uri Avnery, Redress 1/4/2014
A former Israeli army chief of staff, a man of limited intelligence, was told that a certain individual was an atheist. “Yes,” he asked, “but a Jewish atheist or a Christian atheist?”
Lenin, in his Swiss exile, once inquired about the party affiliation of a newly elected member of the Duma. “Oh, he is just a fool!,” his assistant asserted. Lenin answered impatiently: “A fool in favour of whom?”
I am tempted to pose a similar question about people touted to be neutral in our conflict: “Neutral in favour of whom?”The USA’s Jewish “peace brokers”
The question came to my mind when I saw an Israeli documentary about the US intermediaries who have tried over the last 40 years or so to broker peace between the Palestinians and us.
For some reason, most of them were Jews.
I am sure that all of them were loyal American citizens, who would have been sincerely offended by any suggestion that they served a foreign country, such as Israel. They honestly felt themselves to be neutral in our conflict.
But were they neutral? Are they? Can they be?
My answer is: No, they couldn’t.
Not because they were dishonest. Not because they consciously served one side. Certainly not. Perish the thought! more.. e-mail
Solidarity helped me keep fighting, says released hunger striker Samer Issawi
Budour Youssef Hassan, Electronic Intifada 1/1/2014
There was a distinctly different ambience at the home of the Issawis this time around. It would be the first time that we were visiting expecting to meet Samer Issawi himself.
This visit was not about offering solidarity and support, an act we undertook repeatedly when Samer was in prison. This time the visit was not to participate in a demonstration calling for his release.
We did not hear the tediously familiar sound bombs that usually accompanied our visits to the village of Issawiyeh in occupied East Jerusalem.
This visit was a celebratory and congratulatory one.
Finally, a week after her son’s release, it was possible to look Leila, Samer Issawi’s mother, in the eye and smile incessantly, free from the anxiety and agitated hope that saddled our hearts when we met her previously. In Palestine, moments of collective joy and triumph are so rare that we feel like we snatch them from the jaws of our occupiers.
The release of Samer Issawi on 23 December 2013 was one of those moments of joy that will linger in the memories of all who witnessed it.Dawn raid
On the morning of his release, journalists and supporters of Samer Issawi began gathering at the family’s home. Israeli occupation forces had already raided the Issawis’ home at dawn and the previous night, warning the family not to hold celebrations. more.. e-mail
African asylum seekers to strike in protest of Israeli immigration policies
Michael Omer-Man, +972 Magazine 1/4/2014
In protest of new law authorizing indefinite detention and a wave of roundups in south Tel Aviv, asylum seekers declare general strike and three days of protests.
Thousands of African asylum seekers met in a south Tel Aviv park Saturday night to plan a three-day general strike protesting Israel’s asylum and immigration policies.
Their central demands are an end to the practice of indefinitely detaining asylum seekers and that Israel individually examine their requests for asylum and refugee status.
Read: Asylum seekers claim a place on the Israeli political map
Currently Israel does not examine the asylum claims of Sudanese and Eritreans in the country – either individually or otherwise. Those two groups are given papers that prevent their deportation but do not allow them to work or otherwise sustain themselves.
The strike, which was set to begin Sunday morning, will involve protest marches, demonstrations in front of various foreign embassies and protests in central Tel Aviv.
Restaurants, bars and cafes in Tel Aviv generally employ Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers as dishwashers and kitchen staff. Because they have no work permits, they are often paid less than minimum wage and face labor exploitation in various ways. more.. e-mail
Resource: How agriculture is used to take over West Bank land
+972 Magazine 1/4/2014
The Zionist ideal of Jewish agriculture in the Land of Israel reached the occupied West Bank within months of the end of the 1967 War.
The agricultural takeover of large swaths of land requires relatively few resources and time in comparison with actual construction or the establishment of outposts, and facilitates the quick establishment of facts on the ground.
This activity is part of a widespread and well-funded strategy, whose explicit goal is to expand the territory controlled by Israeli settlers throughout Area C in the West Bank.
A recent report by Dror Etkes of Kerem Navot shows that the wholesale takeover of agricultural land is not and isolated effort of individual settlers or settlements, but part of a long-term and well-funded strategy that has been encouraged and supported by governmental and public agencies for many years, despite the blatant illegality of much of the activity, even in terms of Israeli law. — See also: Kerem Navotand Download resource more.. e-mail
