The battle over numbers: Gaza conflict is about quality not quantity
Mairav Zonszein, +972 Magazine 8/11/2014
While it may be tempting for those of us who are against Operation Protective Edge to stress the lopsided casualty statistics as a way to promote our criticism, this war should not focus on the numbers.
One of the most painfully obvious aspects of the current warfare between Israel and Gaza (and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on a whole) is the stark disparity in the number of casualties: 1,928 Palestinians killed compared with 67 Israelis, based on the latest figures recorded by each side. Both the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza and the UN claim the majority are civilians, whereas Israel claims that around half are militants and thus legitimate targets. Regardless of what numbers one subscribes to, no one can deny Palestinians are the winners (read: losers) when it comes to numbers. Yet they nonetheless remain the subject of intense debate.
Recent articles in both the BBC and the New York Times call attention to the accuracy the death toll. Both articles question the credibility of the numbers provided by Hamas and human rights groups on the ground, which many (myself included) often quote, as they are the only official numbers publicized. No official Israeli government body has provided final numbers on the outcome of its strikes in real time, and there is no other body doing so. The BBC report specifically cites over-representation of adult male civilian casualties as evidence that challenges the notion that Israeli strikes in Gaza have been indiscriminate.
The growing death toll and its composition (civilian vs. militant, child vs. adult, male vs. female) are a prominent feature of the media coverage, seemingly to provide the bare facts about the war. Twitter has been full of photos of dead Palestinian children and regular updates on the alarming number of casualties in Gaza, alongside those who tweet the number of rockets launched in a given day into Israel, or the number of Israeli citizens under sirens and forced into bomb shelters. more.. e-mail

The Palestinian Holocaust in Gaza
Fidel Castro, CounterPunch 8/11/2014
A Repugnant New Form of Fascism
I think that a new, repugnant form of fascism is emerging with notable strength, at this time in human history when more that seven billion inhabitants are struggling for their survival.
None of these circumstances have anything to do with the creation of the Roman Empire, around 2,400 years ago, or with the U.S. empire which, in this region only 200 years ago, was described by Simón Bolívar who exclaimed, “…the United States appears to be destined by providence to plague America with misery in the name of liberty.” England was the first true colonial power to use its dominion over a large part of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, North America, and many Caribbean islands, in the first half of the 20th century.
On this occasion I will not talk about the wars and crimes committed by the United States empire over more than 100 years, but will only state what it wanted to do to Cuba, what it has done to many other countries in the world, and only served to prove that “A just idea in the depth of a cave is stronger than an army.”
History is much more complicated than everything I have said, but that is the was it is, in broad strokes, as the inhabitants of Palestine know, and it is likewise logical that the modern communications media reflect the news which arrives daily, as has occurred with the shameful, criminal war in the Gaza Strip, a piece of land where the population lives in what remains of what was independent Palestine only 50 years ago.
The French agency AFP reported August 2, “The war between the Islamist Palestinian movement Hamas and Israel has caused the deaths of close to 1,800 Palestinians,… more.. e-mail

The world is letting Israel get away with it again
Larry Derfner, +972 Magazine 8/11/2014
The assault on Gaza has hurt this country’s image, and it doesn’t care.
There’s no doubt that this past month of heavily televised overkill in Gaza – well, heavily televised everywhere but here – has hurt Israel’s standing in the world. The IDF has killed too many civilians, wiped out too many families, bombed too many UN shelters. Even Washington has used words like “indefensible” and “disgraceful” to describe some of Israel’s acts. And while the world’s powers-that-be don’t like Hamas, they do like the Palestinian Authority and its leader, Mahmoud Abbas, and they know very well that the Netanyahu government has continuously trashed any chance of making peace with him.
So in terms of high politics, of Israel’s international relations, and considering Israel’s image in international public opinion, Operation Protective Edge has been a great failure. If before the war Israel’s liberal friends had warned that its policies were driving people away and leaving the country increasingly “isolated,” Israel’s behavior over the last month has aggravated that condition badly.
To which Israel says: who cares? If I may mangle Ben-Gurion’s famous dictum, it doesn’t matter what the goyim say, it matters what the goyim do, and the goyim are doing nothing. Even now, after this month-long horror show in Gaza, which isn’t over.
And since the goyim – along with the liberal Jews who are appalled by Israel’s actions – are doing nothing, meaning they’re not punishing or penalizing Israel in any manner, not holding it in any way accountable for what it has done to Gaza and its people, then Israel indeed has no reason to care what the goyim or liberal Jews say.
The world is shocked by the death and devastation in Gaza, it understands that the “root cause” is Israel’s half-century denial of freedom to the Palestinians…. more.. e-mail

Dispatch from Gaza: massacres continue as world watches
Martin Lejeune in Gaza City, Alternative Information Center 8/5/2014
Death is our constant companion whenever we are heading by car towards bombed out residential houses, public institution or the refugee camps. At any time and at any place bombs can suddenly rain from the sky without any warning.
Another school was bombarded today. This time in Rafah. The death toll is unknown, as many dead are still buried under the rubble. Rafah is being continuously attacked for the past three days, turning the city into a death zone. When I suggested to Maher, my Palestinian host, to drive there, he said: “I still need you alive in the coming few days, because I am sure there will be further Israeli attacks, more destruction and refugees”.
Maher has already taken in 62 people who fled toward the center of the Gaza Strip from the north and south. During normal times their house has 10 inhabitants, now they are 72. Maher and the employees of the charity “Islamic Relief” have set four priorities to support some of the 200.000 refugees. Priority is to supply internally displaced Palestinians with food and water, and to improve their health and hygienic conditions. Maher drives around in his car all day to supply the refugees with the absolute minimum. The displaced are simple people who do not possess sufficient savings to live in a hotel or do not have any relatives in Gaza City with whom they could stay.
Since the heavy bombardment of our area in the night between the 28th and 29th of July (see my text “Days and nights of horror in Gaza”) we are cut off from electricity, water, internet and phone. The bombs destroyed power poles and cut telephone cables. Ever since July 29, Maher is trying to find someone to repair the telephone line, but he cannot find a single employee of the telephone company. As laymen one can improvise a lot, but repairing a broken telecommunication network is beyond us. To resupply the house with electricity, Maher is looked for a generator. However, that is not an easy undertaking as none of Gaza’s 1.8 million inhabitants have electricity. Eventually he somehow managed to get generator and some petrol filled in water bottles and cans…. more.. e-mail

“Not in Our Name” action
In Gaza: 11 Aug 2014 – For Canadians. This website gives an easy way to find your MP and a send a letter to them, CCing the bigwigs. Here’s my modified version. My MP is a decent man, so while my utter dismay at Harper, Mulcair, Trudeau and May’s stances remains, I toned down the form letter as I want to allow Mr. Chong a chance to consider and make a public statement on Gaza first. The modified letter (original is HERE ): Dear Michael Chong, As you may know, I have lived a collective 3 of the past 6 years in the Gaza Strip, including during two major Israeli assaults (2008/9 and Nov 2012). I’ve also experienced the daily assault of Israel’s strangulating siege on Gaza, which at its height banned not only construction materials (still banned), fertilizers (likewise), but also fishing equipment, food products, baby diapers, spices, A4 paper, toys, shoes…As a father, I am…more
