Israeli occupation’s dark underbelly exposed
Jonathan Cook in Nazareth, CounterPunch 9/23/2014
The Revelations of the Israeli Refuseniks
A letter signed by 43 veterans of an elite Israeli military intelligence unit declaring their refusal to continue serving the occupation has sent shockwaves through Israeli society. But not in the way the soldiers may have hoped.
Unusually, this small group of reservists has gone beyond justifying their act of refusal in terms of general opposition to the occupation.
Because of their place at the heart of the system of control over Palestinians, they have set out in detail, in the letter and subsequent interviews, what their work entails and why they find it morally repugnant.
No order is unlawful
Veterans of the secretive Unit 8200, Israel’s NSA, say it is drummed into new intelligence recruits that no order is unlawful. They must, for example, guide air strikes even if civilians will be harmed.
The 43, all barred by Israeli law from identifying themselves publicly, say they avoided serving during Israel’s latest attack on Gaza, fearing what would be permitted. But their concerns relate to more than the legality of military attacks.
In a telling admission, one reservist said he first questioned his role after watching The Lives of Others, a film depicting life under the Stasi, East Germany’s much-feared secret police. The Stasi are estimated to have collected files on five million East Germans before the Berlin Wall fell. more.. e-mail

A slightly ‘less crazy’ Israel
Michael Schaeffer Omer-man, +972 Magazine 9/23/2014
A few thoughts on the decision to shut down Israel’s detention facility for African asylum seekers, what the High Court ruling says about the gratuitous and political arrests of Palestinian protesters in Israel, and the assassination that only took place if you read Hebrew.
1. A slightly ‘less crazy’ Israel
Following the Israeli High Court decision on Monday to shut down Holot and cancel the piece of legislation that permitted the indefinite detention of African asylum seekers (the way the law was written, non-African asylum seekers were never in danger of indefinite detention), Darfuri refugee Mutasim Ali wrote in +972: “I am not celebrating this, because this is normal — what should happen.”
I believe what Ali means is that it would have been absolutely crazy if the High Court of Justice, the body to which one turns when seeking justice in this land, had said: “Actually, it’s okay to lock up black people indefinitely and without charge. No problem.” (Let’s forget for a second the fact that the High Court has upheld administrative on numerous occasions.)
Mutasim Ali’s sentiment reminded me of an interview with Chris Rock, in which the comedian says he refuses to describe the current state of race relations in the United States as “progress.”
“When you say it’s progress you’re acting like what happened before wasn’t crazy … We’ve made a lot of progress and we got rid of segregation … but segregation is crazy!” The people who were denying black people their rights, Rock explains, have simply become less crazy.
Of course, it is also crazy that for 47 years millions of people have been living with no civil rights under military occupation with separate and unequal legal systems…. more.. e-mail

Another Israeli act of military madness in Syria
Larry Derfner, +972 Magazine 9/23/2014
On Tuesday morning the Air Force shot down a Syrian fighter jet for no good reason on earth.
For the first time in 30 years, a Syrian fighter jet on Tuesday morning strayed over the border with Israel – or rather, over the border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which rightfully belongs to Syria. Israeli military officials reportedly think it was an accident. They also think the Syrian jet was on its way to bomb Al-Nusra jihadists on the Syrian side of the border.
The incursion of the Syrian plane lasted two seconds. It got about 800 meters onto the Israeli-occupied side of the border. Then the pilots turned the jet back toward Syria.
So what did Israel do then? What else? It blew the Syrian jet out of the sky. The crippled plane landed on the Syrian side of the border. Thankfully, the Syrian pilots ejected safely.
All the details of the incident point to an Israeli act of incredible recklessness and stupidity.
Yedioth Ahronoth reports that “the IDF thinks the jet crossed into Israel by accident en route to attacking rebel positions on the Golan.” Same story: “According to a military source, the jet entered Israel for a couple of seconds, penetrating a few hundred meters before turning back (bold italics added), at which point it was hit by the Patriot missile.”
But then a few paragraphs later, an IDF officer tells Yedioth: “We identified the Syrian jet at a height of 10-14,000 feet. That’s a height considered comfortable for an attack run. A fighter jet can reach the Sea of Galilee in less than a minute and everywhere else in five.” more.. e-mail

The war on Gaza: Where did the resistance go wrong?
Saleh Al-Naami, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) 9/23/2014
It is neither worthwhile nor sufficient for the Palestinian resistance to celebrate its great show of resistance during the war on Gaza and its success in preventing the success of Zionist schemes and Israeli aggressions on Gaza. On the contrary, it must consider the value of its military operations and consider its shortcomings as well as the path of the war and its consequences. The most important factor to remember is that the Palestinian resistance was dragged into a war during the most unfavourable regional and internal conditions to occur in the history of the Palestinian cause.
One may argue that this war was imposed on the Palestinian resistance because it forced it to respond to Israel’s targeted assassinations of Palestinian political figures; however, this is a shallow explanation that does not reflect what is required to wage the best form of resistance while preventing losses. This analysis does not refer to the discussion of this subject prior to this article because calling on Israel to respond to Palestinian resistance with political assassinations would lead to a full-scale war in an environment with a rather impossible situation.
Forces of the resistance exhibited a heroic fight by demonstrating a willingness to use unconventional and heroic tactics on the battlefield. The absence of these tactics would have led to a Zionist victory. More importantly, regional leaders who had placed their bets on a Zionist victory failed to achieve their goals due to the steadfastness of Palestinian resistance forces that refuse to remove themselves from the equation of the battle with the Zionist enemy. And yet, regional conditions did not work in the resistance’s favour.
There is no doubt that regional conditions proved to be a challenge for the resistance and its forces, as no other Arab party was prepared to support Palestinian factions and this prolonged the conflict. In fact, it is due to the region’s political atmosphere that the Palestinians were unable to have their demands met…. more.. e-mail

“Democracy Now” [aka “Imperialism Now”] and the “Progressive” Alternative Media: Valued Cheerleaders For Imperialism and War
In Gaza: 23 Sep 2014 – -Finian Cuningham, Global Research , Jul 13, 2012 **excerpts** “This is where a segment of the so-called alternative media can play a valuable propaganda function for Western powers. Because such media are supposed to be independent, critical, non-corporate, the public tends to consider their reports as objective and unbiased. One such “alternative” news service is “Democracy Now” hosted by Amy Goodman. Goodman is seen as something of a campaigning critical journalist shedding the light of truth on the depredations of the US government, corporations and the Pentagon. But a closer look at what Goodman’s “Democracy Now” is reporting on Syria shows that the purported critical broadcaster has become a purveyor of Western government propaganda. While the mainstream media’s propaganda function is obvious to the informed public, Goodman’s “Democracy Now” plays a more subtle role. Camouflaged with the trappings of critical, independent journalism, “Democracy Now” serves to sow powerful seeds of misinformation…more

Did Israel Help US by Downing Syrian Jet?
Dissident Voice: 23 Sep 2014 – Today the US – backed by “moderate” Arab states like Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Jordan – started bombing territory in another sovereign state, Syria, without a UN Security Council resolution or a plausible argument that it is acting in self-defence. That makes it a crime of aggression,
defined at Nuremberg as “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.” In a sign that Obama’s war on ISIS in Syria could quickly be extended into a war against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, Israel downed a Syrian jet inside Syria this morning with a US-funded Patriot missile. According to Israel, the Syrian plane had passed 800 metres into its territory before heading back into Syria, during what the Israeli media say was a sortie against “rebels” operating close to the Israeli border (that’s right – the people Obama is currently…
