Thursday, 22 February 2024 — Just Treatment
This is really serious. Did you see the latest news that there’s been a 26% drop in nursing applications? When I saw these headlines, I was filled with dread. But to tell you the truth, I wasn’t surprised.
My name is Rosie, and I’m training to be a mental health nurse. I’ll be honest, from what I’ve seen during my time providing patient care so far, it’s pretty clear why there’s a nursing crisis in our health service.
William, imagine going into work each day and knowing everything is slowly but surely falling apart. Where all I can do is firefight alongside my exhausted colleagues, without the staffing and beds we desperately need to keep patients safe. My only hope is that whoever takes charge at the next election properly commits to tackling this crisis – but I know this will only happen if politicians really feel the pressure from the public.
They need to hear stories from patients whose health is falling apart after being on a waiting list for years. They should look into the eyes of bereaved families who would’ve done anything to save their loved ones. These are the stories that need to make headlines and force the NHS crisis right to the top of the election agenda.
William, Just Treatment has a brilliant plan to make this happen. In fact, they’re already busy making actions and headlines. But the only way they can continue this work is if they have ongoing, generous support all the way up to the election.
SinceI started training to be a nurse, I have had so many people ask me why I even want to go into nursing under the current conditions. It makes me so sad hearing this question, but is it any wonder?
A combination of funding cuts, increased workloads, exhaustion and a feeling of being completely undervalued has already led to so many nurses quitting the NHS. There are 42,000 vacancies in England alone.
My loans don’t even cover my basic outgoings. Many nurses have to pick up extra shifts just to afford to live. Over a decade of real-terms pay cuts means so many of my colleagues have felt no choice but to take strike action over the past year – including thousands of junior doctors who are set to strike once again in the coming days.
William, nurses like me and all the other amazing health workers simply cannot fight this battle on our own – especially at a time when we are being demonised and ignored by the government. But I’m filled with hope that you and incredible NHS patients across the country have the power to put HUGE public pressure on the government and demand change.
All of us deserve an NHS we can rely on, and it’s up to the politicians that say they represent us to deliver it. This General Election, let’s send a message so loud that they cannot ignore it.
Thank you so so much for your support,
Rosie
