As we head towards the end of summer, in a couple of weeks children across England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be returning to school, whilst students in Scotland have already recommenced. For a lot of children this will be an exciting, positive and happy time. But for many young people, school can actually be a brutal and traumatising place which fuels mental distress.
From exclusions, exam pressures and oppressive ‘behaviour management’ systems, to being forced to sit still and keep quiet rather than having the space to move and express themselves – many aspects of the current education model are having negative impacts on children’s mental health. But it doesn’t have to be this way. |

As part of our youth-led campaigning around the mental health crisis, alongside fighting for treatment for all we also want to expose and challenge the structural drivers that are making so many unwell in the first place. From repressive education models to insecure jobs and housing, from climate-wrecking companies to dangerous social media platforms – there are a range of social and economic policies that are centring competition, isolation and corporate profits rather than people’s health and wellbeing. Without tackling these underlying conditions, Britain’s mental health crisis will continue to worsen, which means demand on our health service will only increase. |
