Last week, the Democratic Party formally nominated Vice President Kamala Harris as its candidate for president.
While delegates inside the Democratic National Convention venue in Chicago heard speeches and held a roll call vote, thousands rallied outside to demand that the Democratic Party and its administration in the White House end the supply of American weapons fueling Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
During the convention, members of the Uncommitted Movement protested that the party refused to allow a Palestinian American delegate to speak from the convention stage.
Some commentators and activists expressed dismay at the party’s refusal to platform a Palestinian.
But many Palestinians criticized the Uncommitted Movement’s approach, feeling that putting a Palestinian on stage would be at best an empty gesture, and would only help the Democrats whitewash their image, while the party and its nominee remain fully committed to arming Israel as it commits genocide.
Joining us today to talk about if and how Palestinians should engage with American politics – and much more – is Steven Salaita, a professor of English and comparative literature at the American University of Cairo.
He is the author of eight books, including a new novel that just came out, titled Daughter, Son, Assassin. Earlier this year, he published a memoir, An Honest Living with Fordham University Press.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Hizballah carried out a significant drone and missile attack against military and intelligence targets in Israel, in retaliation for Tel Aviv’s assassination last month of Fuad Shukr, a senior commander in the Lebanese resistance organization.
Israel tried to spin the attack as a failure, and claimed that it detected and preempted a much bigger Hizballah attack by launching a series of airstrikes.
In his report, Jon Elmer will take us through the latest resistance news from southern Gaza and the Netzarim corridor and will share his analysis of Hizballah’s retaliatory strike on key military bases in Israel.
We’ll also share some excerpts of pieces written by our beloved friend and longtime contributor Dr. Refaat Alareer.
He wrote them in October, but they were first published by The Electronic Intifada last week. Refaat, a poet, writer, professor and mentor to countless students in Gaza, was murdered by Israel on 6 December 2023.
The program will begin with a news brief from Nora Barrows-Friedman. Please join Nora, Jon, Ali Abunimah and Asa Winstanley for all this and more.
