We brought MPs face-to-face with young PIP claimants

Monday, 12 May 2025 — Just Treatment

Last week myself and other young people living with severe mental illness took to Parliament to speak with MPs face-to-face about the dangers of the planned disability cuts.

We explained how PIP enables so many of us to survive. We spoke about how many of us have been traumatised and invalidated by the PIP process itself. We shared our fears about what would happen to young people like us if the planned cuts go ahead.

Since then a number of the MPs we engaged with have spoken out against the cuts. Some of our testimonials were even read out in Parliament by Nadia Whittome MP.

Our message is getting through to MPs, but there is still so much work to be done to convince enough politicians to oppose the plans. We’ve just put out a new video calling on all MPs to defend the rights of disabled communities. Will you watch & share the video, and also tag your MP in the comments if you can?

Speaking to MPs about our mental illness wasn’t easy. But we are doing it because these politicians need to understand the human impact of the policies they are considering.

We took this action because the voices of disabled people – particularly young people living with mental illness – are being deliberately shut out of this process.

For example, did you know that the changes to PIP eligibility criteria – which will result in over a million disabled people losing their support – are not even included in the DWP’s own consultation process?

It is unfathomable that the government is looking to proceed with these policies without meaningfully engaging with the communities who will be directly impacted.

So we will keep raising our voices, but we need you to help. Will you share our new video and, if your MP is on social media, tag them in the comments and ask them to take action?

Votes on these deadly cuts are expected in Parliament in a matter of weeks. The tide is turning, but it’s vital we keep the pressure up.

Thanks for your support, and more to come soon.
