The UK and the EU signed a new trade and fishery deal together with easier movement of students much to the anger of the right in the country who accused them of breaching the spirit of Brexit despite the majority of Brits no longer favour Leaving as once they did.
It is often forgotten that the US favoured a united Europe after the War. There were three reasons it did so. Firstly, it wanted to ensure a united Europe could stand up to Comecon led by the USSR and not war amongst themselves. Secondly, its leading industries such as General Motors, Fords, General Electric, Boeing and the oil majors were continental in scale. Thus, a united Europe provided the kind of market they could exploit. Thirdly, the US knew it could exercise effective control and intimidation of Europe through NATO by providing the military umbrella over Europe and holding onto its handle.
