Ahmed Abu Artema is a Palestinian writer, poet and journalist. His vision of a nonviolent mass movement in Gaza to challenge Israel’s siege and blockade of the territory inspired the 2018 Great March of Return.
Israel responded to that joyful, unarmed mobilization of hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, to demand their right of return, in the only way it knows how: Military snipers murdered hundreds of people and maimed thousands more.
For the past two years, Ahmed survived the genocide in Gaza, but lost everything and many people who mattered to him, above all, his 13-year-old son Abdallah, murdered in an Israeli airstrike on the family home.
Ahmed remained in Gaza until 27 August. On that day, he was evacuated by the Dutch government.
On today’s Livestream we’ll talk to Ahmed about how and why he left Gaza, and what he witnessed there.
We’ll start the program with Nora Barrows-Friedman’s report on recent developments in Gaza and across Palestine.
Jon Elmer will bring us the latest resistance news from Gaza, along with a report on the Israeli military’s use of unmanned, remotely operated armored vehicles as bombs.
We’ll also discuss the significance of the “recognition” of the “State of Palestine” by a number of Western countries. Is it a step forward or a distraction?
Please join Nora, Jon, Ali Abunimah, Tamara Nassar and Asa Winstanley for all this and more.
