*Content warning: self harm and suicide* |
| 1 in 5 young people now has a probable mental disorder. Over 500,000 children are stuck on a waiting list for mental health support. This is a national health crisis, and it hasn’t come from nowhere.
Research has shown it’s being fuelled in large part by unaccountable social media companies, who have deliberately designed algorithms which promote harmful content and keep young people hooked.
I have experienced this first-hand. When I was withdrawn and isolated, my Instagram and Facebook feeds quickly became a source of graphic, violent images encouraging self harm and suicide. My mental health spiralled, and as a result I ended up in a psychiatric hospital. We cannot let social media companies get away with these harmful business practices. That’s why earlier today, the Mad Youth Organise campaign installed a giant billboard outside Meta’s London headquarters calling them out for fuelling young people’s mental illness. ⬇️ |

The role of big tech companies in harming mental health is coming under increasing scrutiny. Just yesterday, billboards and bus stop ads appeared around London calling out social media for fuelling the youth mental health crisis. ⬇️ |

| Now we need to channel that momentum into pushing for concrete action that can curb the power of these giant companies.
In the coming days and weeks we will be sharing loads more ways to get involved in this fight. For all the latest Mad Youth Organise news, please join our WhatsApp announcements channel and sign up to our campaign mailing list! |
| It’s time to take on the big tech billionaires!
