A damning new report by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has documented how Israel is systematically using the deprivation of water as a weapon of collective punishment against Palestinians in Gaza. The report titled “Water as a Weapon” reveals that nearly 90 percent of water and sanitation infrastructure has been obliterated by the occupation forces including desalination plants and vital pipelines. MSF asserts that this deliberate denial of life sustaining resources is an integral component of the ongoing genocide and describes a pattern of violence where Palestinians are routinely shot by the military while attempting to access or distribute water.

The humanitarian organization notes that the scarcity is not merely a byproduct of the genocide but a calculated campaign of destruction that has left children being killed while waiting in line for drinking water. Claire San Filippo, an MSF emergency manager, stated that Israeli authorities are fully aware that life ends without water yet they continue to block critical supplies like pumps and chlorine while destroying boreholes that serve as lifelines for tens of thousands. These conditions have created a perfect storm for the spread of infectious diseases with skin and gastrointestinal illnesses skyrocketing as families are forced to live in overcrowded tents without basic hygiene products or toilets.

Despite being a primary distributor of water in Gaza, MSF reports that one in five of its distributions now runs dry because of the blockade on fuel and spare parts for generators. Israel has rejected or ignored one third of all requests for water and sanitation materials ensuring that even the most basic survival needs of over two million people remain unmet.
