From racist terror in France, to enforcing belonging in the UK

This week’s Calendar of Race and Resistance features the shocking act of racist terror in Trappes and La Verrière, west of Paris, in which a gunman targeted Black and Brown people in a drive-by shooting which killed a young French man of Congolese origin, Pengo Bossio Wangi, and injured five people including a 12-year-old girl, shot eight times, and two African school cleaners. The attack followed right-wing commentary claiming Black and Arab youth are behind violent protests.

And as the Stormont administration declares almost half of Northern Ireland unsafe or potentially unsafe for asylum seekers, the calendar reveals the increasing attacks on properties believed to be HMOs and other asylum accommodation, including an arson attack on a building in Cambridgeshire earmarked for refugee mothers and babies, an intrusion into an asylum seeker’s home by ‘English nationalists’ posing as contractors, filmed and posted as ‘HMO hunting in Leicestershire’, and 50 reported attacks in Greater Manchester, where police believe that vulnerable people including children are being paid to damage properties suspected of housing migrants and refugees.
