Our September is harder than your September
Nasser Laham, Ma’an News Agency9/11/2010
We’re not violent, but we are very, very angry.
On the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, the entire world mourns for the civilians who lost their lives.
In New York City Americans are reciting the names of the 2,752 victims who died when the World Trade Center collapsed.
People are standing for a moment of silence in memory of the victims and to show respect for their memories.
US President Barack Obama is taking part in a ceremony at the Pentagon, while Vice President Joe Biden attends a ceremony in New York.
Today is a moment of reflection. What have we learned?
— Al-Qaeda, the Islamist extremist organization, which says it threatens Zionists and “unbelievers,” has slaughtered predominately Muslims in the last nine years in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chechnya, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Their victims are Muslim, not Israeli, not “unbelievers.” This makes Muslims wonder: Who are you fighting? Who’s your enemy? Why?
— America’s arrogance continued under former president George W. Bush, arguably the world’s worst leader since World War II. Despite his exit, marked by shoe-thrower Munthather Al-Zeida, America still doesn’t understand the difference between our needs and theirs. We search for water, medicine, housing and freedom. They’re exploring the solar system and ocean depths. more.. e-mail
Apropos ‘Peace Talks’
Gilad Atzmon, Dissident Voice9/10/2010
Needless to mention, I don’t hold my breath for the outcome of the current ‘peace talks’. As I mentioned many times before, Israelis are not interested in peace as they fail to grasp what peace is all about or what it stands for. Shalom, the Hebrew word for peace, is interpreted by Israelis and most Jews as ‘security for the Jews’. Shalom therefore has nothing to do with reconciliation or living amongst others. Shalom is a judeo-centric concept, it conveys an image of hope to one people only. The Israeli Palestinian conflict can never be resolved by a ‘shalom initiative’. Shalom is there to split the land and separate the people. It is there to deny the Palestinians of their elementary rights such as the Right of Return.
But let us assume for a second that I am completely wrong in my reading of the Israelis and their cultural and political understandings. Let’s for that purpose look into an imaginary scenario in which an Israeli PM wakes up one sunny morning with the unusual determination to bring about true peace. In the wee small hours, wisdom embraces him or her. He or she realises that Israel is in fact Palestine: it is stretched over historic Palestine at the expense of the Palestinian people, their livelihood and their history. He or she grasps that the Palestinians are the indigenous people of the land, and the rockets they shoot from time to time are nothing but love letters to their stolen villages, orchards, vineyards and fields.
Our imaginary Israeli PM realises that the so-called Israeli Palestinian conflict can be resolved in 25 minutes once both people decide to live together. Following the Israeli unilateral tradition, an immediate televised press conference is called on the same day at 2 PM. Captivated by true righteousness the PM announces to the world and his people “Israel realises its unique circumstances and its crucial responsibility for world peace. Israel calls the Palestinian people to return to their homes. The Jewish state is to become a state of its citizens where all people enjoy full equal rights”. more.. e-mail
Peace Process De ja Vu
Anthony Dimaggio, CounterPunch9/9/2010
Settlements are the Barrier to Real Peace
We’ve been here many times before. The “peace process” through which the U.S. allegedly seeks to broker a long lasting stability between Israelis and Palestinians reaches back a number of decades. Many readers of the American press will no doubt be fed up with the entire charade. How many negotiations does it take before a real peace agreement materializes? We’ve seen numerous initiatives in the form of the Bush I Baker Plan, the 1993 Oslo agreement, the 2000 Camp David meetings, the 2001 Taba Negotiations, the Bush administration’s “Road Map,” and now a renewed initiative under the Obama administration ‚Äì yet peace has eluded Israelis and Palestinians every step of the way.
To say that one favors “peace” is largely a meaningless statement at this point. American officials want “peace” in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the way they pursue it is through infinite war, occupation, and widespread destruction. Israelis strongly favor peace; they simply want a peace where Palestinians allow permanent settlements, military checkpoints, and bypass roads that will permanently create a set of Palestinian Bantustans which prohibit the emergence of a sovereign contiguous state. Israeli leaders also want to continue settlement construction, and maintain permanent control over Palestinian borders and airspace, not to mention over the city of Jerusalem (which has also been illegally occupied since 1967) and a prohibition on the establishment of a Palestinian army. American officials are more than happy to broker a “peace” on such terms, as Clinton attempted to do in 2000, which will result in permanent instability and misery for the people of Gaza and the West Bank.
Enter the new round of “peace” negotiations with Barack Obama. The New York Times reports that a major potential sticking point is that “the Israeli and Palestinian leaders did not confront the one issue that could sink these talks….” more.. e-mail
