Mer-Khamis and binational resistance movement
Amira Hass, Haaretz, Israeli Occupation Archive4/6/2011

Juliano was lucky. He was born Palestinian and Jewish, Jewish and Palestinian. This angry man was beset by conflicting yet complementary identities. He was the long shadow of an imagined binational community from the 1950s. Like a Peter Pan who refuses to grow up, Juliano embodied the potential of a shared life (ta’ayush in Arabic ) while striving for equality. The son of a Jewish mother and a Palestinian father, he was born to two cultures, and chose to live in both. He saw no need to explain.
My guess is that Juliano wasn’t entertaining illusions; sustaining blows from all sides, the potential of ta’ayush shrank. Ta’ayush is the sane vision, but the chance that it will be realized is increasingly slim. There are some who fantasize about the days of the Messiah to avoid thinking about the days before the next disaster strikes. Juliano’s was the offspring of a fantasy of ta’ayush. His birth was the outcome of a fantasy of ta’ayush, and his death is a disaster.
Juliano was angry. His rage was the kind that only a Jew like him, who was born on the left and craved equality until the end, can allow himself to express as a way of life. Palestinians must conquer the anger, mellow it; they must tame it, repress it, sublimate it. That’s the only way to stay both alive and sane (without getting arrested, wounded or killed ) under the conditions of physical and non-physical violence dictated by Israel. — See also: Source more.. e-mail
Another war on Gaza?
Ali Abunimah, Electronic Intifada4/4/2011
In recent weeks an escalation in violence between Israel and Palestinian resistance factions in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip has claimed the lives of more than a dozen Palestinians, the youngest of them 10-year-old Mahmoud Jalal al-Hilu.
Does this escalation increase the likelihood of another large-scale assault on Gaza similar to “Operation Cast Lead” in winter 2008-2009 that killed more than 1,400 Palestinians? There are worrying signs Israel — by its words and deeds — could be laying the ground for an attack.
The ratchet of violence took another turn in the small hours of 2 April when Israel carried out an air attack on the Gaza Strip killing three members of Hamas’ military wing.
Israel did not claim that the three Hamas men were engaged in any hostile activity at the time they were killed (riding in a car), but a statement from the Israeli army alleged that they were “planning to kidnap Israelis over the upcoming Jewish holiday of Passover” — several weeks in the future.
Israel’s latest attack constituted an extrajudicial killing, in which Israel, the occupying power, acted as judge, jury and executioner, issuing allegations for which it offered no evidence, after it had already carried out the death sentence. Under international law, this is a war crime.
Global media tend to report these events as Israeli “retaliation” for Palestinian attacks, but a close reading of Israeli media presents a very different picture: deliberate provocation and escalation by Israel. more.. e-mail
New study: Progress in Palestine — stagnation in Israel
Ma’an News Agency4/8/2011
As change sweeps through the Arab world, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict continues to be defined by the threat of escalation. Contrary to public perception, however, also in the Palestinian territory new political trends have emerged. While these have often been overlooked, they fundamentally question the established parameters of confrontation.
This is the key argument of “The Politics of Change in Palestine – State-Building and Non-Violent Resistance” (Pluto Press, London, March 2011). The book is authored by the East-Jerusalem representative of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, a political foundation affiliated to Germany’s social democratic party.
Taking stock of recent developments in Palestine and Israel, Michael Br??ning argues that “politics of change” in Palestine have “significantly bolstered prospects for Palestinian national aspirations”, as they stand in stark contrast to “a policy of stagnation and a major shift to the right” in Israeli politics. While the study sheds light on internal political developments in the Palestinian territory, it offers a substantial counter-argument to the widespread claim that there is “no Palestinian partner for peace”.
Against the background of US-attempts to jump start “rituals of Middle East peace negotiations”, Br??ning identifies political progress in a variety of levels in Palestine. In the two first chapters, political progress is discussed in terms of programmatic and structural developments within the predominant political movements in Palestine: Hamas and Fatah. Noting remaining shortcomings such as persistent “democratic deficits”, the author makes a convincing claim that both Hamas and the Fatah movement have recently succeeded in bringing change to both political institutions. — See also: The Politics of Change in Palestine: State-Building and Non-Violent Resistance more.. e-mail

Police training programs twin US-Israeli racism
Electronic Intifada: 7 Apr 2011 – The racism of the American “war on drugs,” especially in the south, is notorious. So is the racism faced daily by Palestinians. In Atlanta, a university program allows these two manifestations of racism to feed off each other and community activists are organizing to shut the program down.more
Pity the Village
Palestine Monitor: 7 Apr 2011 – In the third Israeli lockdown of Awarta since the murder of five in Itamar, villagers report that 200 were arrested in what are becoming routine invasions by the IOF. Amjad Suliman Qawariq, the Chief of the Service Department of Awarta, reported that 200 villagers were arrested last night, 6 April, after the Israeli Occupation Forces rolled in at 10:30 pm. According to Qawariq, Israeli police entered with the IOF, ordering villagers to return to their homes and imposing a curfew on the town. At 11:000 pm, police and soldiers began entering homes, conducting searches and detaining residents. According to Abu George, 44, soldiers did not shy away from arresting the elderly, sick or disabled: “Some couldn’t walk, so they carried them.” Abu George’s son has now been arrested twice, and his house raided three times. Those arrested were taken to the Huwarrah military base, not far from Awarta. Once there,…more
War on Palestinian Memory: Israel Resolves Its Democracy Dilemma
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Apr 2011 – By Ramzy Baroud Palestinian citizens of Israel must have been proud of the fact that their collective tenacity always proved stronger than any Israeli attempt at dislocating them from their rightful historical narrative. Now, they are being told to cease and desist from commemorating al-Nakba, the Catastrophe of 1948, which saw the brutal seizure and depopulation of most of Palestine in order to construct the Israeli ‘miracle’. Currently estimated at a fifth of the population of today’s Israel, Palestinians with Israeli citizenship have endured appalling treatment for decades. As Muslims and Christians, they have been regarded as an anomaly in what was meant to be a perfect Jewish utopia governed by the laws of democracy. This is the quandary that Israel has never mastered, as the non-Jewish citizens of Israel have represented a major obstacle to that vision. The question of what to do with Palestinian citizens of Israel has…more
The Fiction of the Jewish History in Palestine
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Apr 2011 – By Hasan Afif El-Hasan Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told NNC Pierce Morgan on March 18, 2011 that he might agree to a Palestinian state through negotiations. And he added, “We will make territorial concessions although it is very painful to do that in our ancestral land.” Netanyahu was not talking about Poland where his ancestors lived. He was talking about Palestine where generations of its indigenous population ancestors lived, cultivated the land and are buried. By the end of the nineteenth century, Zionism created a new Jewish identity of blood and soil. To mobilize their followers and supporters and appeal to their emotions, the Zionists created myths. Zionism started as a tribal religion without god, but in order to fulfill its function as a unifying force, Zionism required external religious and race symbols, not inner content. Its leaders regarded metaphysical religious belief and purity of race as having value in…more
Goldstone’s Wobble Sends Wrong Signal
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Apr 2011 – By Stuart Littlewood ‘If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document,’ says Judge Goldstone in a bombshell article in the Washington Post that set Zionist champagne corks a-poppin’. But what exactly is it Goldstone now knows that suddenly weakens his devastating findings and recommendations? Not that his report tells us more than we already knew from the multitude of accounts by eye-witnesses and other reliable sources. It’s devastating because the evidence is so damning. Its real value, though, is in the legalistic tone and immaculate packaging, which impressed the United Nations and prodded follow-up action. The Mission’s mandate from the United Nations was “to investigate all violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law that might have been committed at any time in the context of the military operations that were conducted in Gaza during the period from…more
Kairos Southern Africa’s Response to Palestine Kairos
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Apr 2011 – By Kairos Southern Africa – Bredell, South Africa The Palestine Kairos Document was launched on Monday evening 4 April 2011, at a meeting of Kairos Southern Africa in Bredell near Johannesburg. The document is called: A moment of truth – A word of faith, hope and love from the heart of the Palestine suffering. The notion of a Palestine Kairos Document was inspired by the South African Kairos Document as a Christian testimony of faith during the dark and last days of apartheid. Palestinian lay people, theologians and church leaders came together to express a testimony of faith in relation to their experience under the occupation of Palestine by Israel. In response to the message of the Palestine Kairos Document, Christians from South Africa and countries in Southern Africa gathering at the conference decided to state the following: We fully honour this faith commitment and courageous witness as expressed by…more
Libya: Arms and Duplicity
Palestine Chronicle: 7 Apr 2011 – By Felicity Arbuthnot – London ‘The assessment is that we have taken out 30 percent of the military capacity of Gaddafi.’ (Brigadier General Mark van Uhm, senior NATO staff officer, 5th April 2011.) On 29th March, freshly back from a good will tour of the Middle East, with a bunch of arms salesmen in tow, as bombs rained down on Libya, Prime Minister David Cameron, welcomed Foreign Ministers from more than forty countries to a London Conference: “To help the Libyan people in their hour of need.” Since the 110 Tomahawk Cruise missiles had pulverized the country in just the first twenty four hours of the start of bombing on 19th., March, had been declared by America’s Nobel Laureate President: “only the first phase”, they surely needed it. The Libyan people, said Cameron must be “free from violence …” Indeed. Our actions were: “… saving lives.” The Prime Minister has…more
